A word from Carbone
Carbone is an Italian-American restaurant created by Mario Carbone, Rich Torrisi and Jeff Zalaznick. The restaurant pays homage to the essence of the great Italian-American restaurants of mid-20th century in New York, where delicious, exceptionally well-prepared food was served in settings that were simultaneously elegant, comfortable and unpretentious. The food nods to that same history, but take its culinary cues from the great talents and techniques of the present and of the future. Familiar dishes like Seafood Salad, Linguini Vongole, Lobster Fra Diavola, Chicken Scarpariello and Veal Parmesan elevated to a new level.Continued

Entering their heavily shaded bistro in Greenwich village, you will instantly notice that this isn't just another black-and-white tile floored variation on a jillion other Italo-American nightspots, but rather a passionate haven for delivering plate after plate of conversation-stopping variations on traditional dishes that make you want to take all your meals from this gem. While the Lobster Fra Diavolo and garlic french-toast croutons in the Caesar salad will seal the deal, the veal parm will rewrite cooking history for years to come."

  • "Good italian food but so overpriced. $26 for three meatballs - about $8.50 a ball? Veal chop marsala was a huge chop with delicious sauce and shrooms. Was it overpriced at $52? The garlic bread and focaccia pizza bread delish. Place tries to be reminiscent of little Italy with neon sign, interior decor and non stop rat pack music so much so that my husband actually thought it was a neighborhood mainstay that dated back...... I wasn't pleased that the waiter did not inform us of certain specials but did so at neighboring tables.... Whats that about? If you Love italian food, are not lactose intolerant and don't mind spending lotso dough on a meal than this place is for you."

Just a couple blocks away is Il Mulino who nails the NY-old-boy charm (if you can cal it that) and rich Italian American food. At the same price, I'd go with the original when a group of friends wants that kind of experience."

  • "It's not easy to get a reservation at this place, so when I got one at 10 on Tuesday night I as pretty excited. I wanted to take my husband out for his belated birthday dinner and I'm so glad we went here. The service was excellent, servers were very polite. The decor is very classy and old school. We ordered the oysters, calamari salad and tuna as appetizers. All were great but the calamari salad is a must. For entree I ordered the lobster and my husband the veal Parmesan. Note the veal Parmesan is a big portion and u may want to go easy on the appetizers if you are going for this as your main. Food was amazing. For dessert we ordered the carrot cake, which was also a generous portion. It's a great spot in a cool neighborhood."

Unfortunately it was not extraordinary, I would certainly not rank it amongst the best Italian restaurants I have been to in NYC . It was nice but not great , the touted veal parmigiana was far from the best. We will revert to the other gems that we frequent for consistently great ITALIAN food. I recommend Ecco on chambers street in lower manhattan."

  • "We loved Carbone. From the moment we entered the restaurant, we were treated so kindly. The service was friendly and helpful and we were treated as special guests. The food was amazing and our waiter made wonderful suggestions as to what we were looking for. The wine steward was so very nice. She made the best recommendations for a wonderful white wine from Sicily and then a delicious red with dinner. My husband hugged her on the way out the door. I would definitely go back and bring friends too!"

  • "Interior was charming, a throwback to the old- school red sauce joints of yore. The veal parm, while good, wasn't the transporting experience expected for a dish priced at $54. After being prompted by the waiter to order pasta, I was given a medium sized order of rigatoni in a quite ordinary spicy tomato sauce, for which I was charged $26. Throw in a glass of barbera, a double espresso, and I was looking at a $150 per person lunch. I'm a veteran of NYC's restaurant scene, and I don't mind paying for quality, but this place is incredibly overpriced, and designed to separate patrons from their money. Perhaps that's why it was empty the day I ate there."

  • "It was a special occasion so we didn't bat an eye, but overall, very overpriced for red sauce Italian food. $75 for a vegetarian lasagna is just crazy. At the very most, with the best ingredients, it was certainly an obscene mark-up. The service was excellent and the restaurant and ambience was lovely. It's unfortunately not enough for me to ever return and pay such extravagant prices for Italian comfort food. New York has so many other options for reasonable prices."

  • "I'd been wanting to eat there for awhile and my wife & I went for lunch. Everyone we dealt with at Carbone couldn't have been nicer or more accommodating -- the service and ambience were first class. No attitude. Our waiter had a great sense of humor. But the food, at least the dishes we ordered -- an appetizer of assorted clams, a Caesar salad, Branzino and a side of broccoli as an entree -- were just not that great. Sorry, but true. We actually found the broccoli dish to be unpleasant, and barely ate it. And the restaurant is very expensive. Lunch was $200. In spite of all the pluses, for me it all comes down to the food, and as you know New York has no shortage of great restaurants."

For months I called to get back in and was put on many cancellation list. it was very difficult to make reservations. Finally we settled for 5:30 on a Sunday thru Open Table.. We enjoyed the experience just as much as the first time. I was hoping we would be disappointed so I didn't need to keep calling again for our third experience."

  • "Even though the setting is lovely and the service excellent, i am sorry to report that the food is absolutely, definetely and without a doubt totallly overpriced. A 23$ "antipasti" plate turned out to be a salad with tomatoes, olives , an a few pieces of viande des grisons. Our 30$ pasta plates contained no more than 6 pieces (10 for my friend) of ravioli sized pastas, that were good but not memorably so. There are so many fabulous restaurants in new york where you can splurge and it is worth it that this one can easily put on a "maybe one day when i inherit my rich aunt" list."

They wrapped our leftover and left us alone for 30 mins, we then had to ask for a dessert menu which they don't have but told us about the options.   • "I knew Carbone's was going to be expensive, but WOW - when the check came I had a coronary. However, the food and service were exceptional. I suppose an occasional splurge is not so terrible. There was not one bite of food that didn't make me swoon (except for the salad). I had the carpaccio and salad to start - salad was nothing special (except for the price $17), but the carpaccio was to die for. Next it was onto spicy rigatoni with the best meatballs I have ever had, but really $26 for three meatballs? I had the veal parmigiana $54) while my friend had the lobster fra diavalo (it was superb @$85). Charred brocolli was terrific. Had to save room for dessert (and I'm glad I did). The tiramisu second to none. Carrot cake was just so so."

Little touches like a great hunk of pecorino turning into a speck of cheese and a nice zeppole at the end that is no more where great differentiators and now they are gone.   • "I've been looking for an excuse to go to Carbone for a while. My bf birthday was the perfect excuse because he loves italian food. I could only get a reservation at 10pm. We arrived and were seated right away. The restaurant is authentic italian looking with the black and white tile floor and red walls. We ordered our bottle of wine first, the wine list is extensive and fairly pricy. The breat to start was amazing! We had the carpaccio and sizzling panchetta to start. Both were delicious. I got the lobster mezzaluna, which is kind of like lobster raviloi in black pasta dough. My bf got the special which was a raviloi with black truffles. Both were really good! Definitly don't skip the pasta!"

  • "Wonderful dinner at Carbone, intimate seating, great background music, outstanding service and food. The staff here pays great attention to you and to detail. Never were our water or wine glasses empty, the staff is always paying attention to your needs, never overbearing or intrusive. The meal begins with delicious breads, spiced olive oil, fresh prosciutto and Parmigiano Reggiano. Started with baked clams and sizzling Pancetta followed by Linguini Vongole (clams in pink sauce), Veal Parm. as the main. All portions large enough to share (a must!) and all delicious. We wound up talking to the couples seated on both sides and we all passed around and shared the different things we ordered, fun!. Carbone is a must go dining experience."

  • "A delayed review for one of the better restaurants I dined at in 2013. We were lucky enough to get into Carbone early, before the reviews started to pile up. The ambience -- charming vintage throwback. The service -- as promised, an updated version of Il Mulino but with a warmth that made it easy to accept. After visiting a few restaurants that were otherwise good but failed on the service recently, I can't emphasize enough how this can change a night out for us. The food -- speaks for itself. Excellent. We will return again when we've saved up enough room in our stomachs to appreciate it."

  • "Enjoyed a delicious lunch here with my daughters. We had ceasar salad, meatballs(lunch special that day) pasta with vodka sauce, and the most delicious scallops. The scallops were done francese which I had never eaten before. Everything was divine. Oh, also they bring out hot garlic bread with fresh mozarella to start! Service was very professional, friendly and polite. Highly recommend. Portions are ample to share. Worth every penny!"
