  • "Waitress was Alicia. She was nice but did not go into great detail about specials or menu like we overheard another waitress give to the table next to us. One plate was served stone cold. The other people at our table had their meal eaten before my plate was redone. The food was mediocre and the vegetables were overcooked. The fish was good. My son's daughter had called the restaurant and they promised her they would sing my son a birthday song with cake..Which never happened. I was disappointed with the claim chowder. It was bland. "

  • "We had a City Tin to Captain Bills and wanted a date night. I figured on Friday I'd make a reservation. We came to the restaurant early so we sat in the lounge and had drinks. ONE HOUR after our reservation was made for, we finally were seated! 10 minutes after being seated, our waitress finally showed up. When we finally got our food, I had been given the wrong order. I ordered the pasta special with added grilled shrimp - they put down chicken on the order. When they fixed my food, it came back with THREE shrimp pieces on it! THREE! for an extra $7.99 charge to add shrimp, you have got to be kidding me!! Ridiculous. Our waitress never came back after given our food except to give the check. I'd never recommend this place to anyone"

  • "We chose this restaurant to celebrate a family member's birthday. She's been living in Madison and remembered her last dining here as "We had a wonderful time 10 years ago." Unfortunately, we felt pretty disappointed within 15 minutes after we were seated because no waitperson appeared to our table. It was less than half tables taken. One of us had to ask a waitperson of the next table to find somebody for us. The food was mostly excellent. However, another of us found her salmon was undercooked. Our waitperson was not anywhere around us, so again we had to ask that unlucky waitperson to send the dish back to the kitchen. I'd say it was a bit overpriced on our entire experience. Things could have changed a lot in ten years."

  • "I celebrated my birthday last weekend with my daughter and son in law. The ambiance and food were great. A wonderful view and great service. We all had seafood, which was fresh and well-prepared. Just a fun, enjoyable evening, with prices that were within reason."

  • "My wife and I enjoyed our dinner, but do have some reservations. Even though there was a relatively small crowd, we were all seated in near proximity, raising the noise level beyond what it could have been. The soup I had was tasty as well as the salad my wife had. Our tenderloin steaks from the lighter menu were cooked to our specifications, but were a bit tough. The sweet potato was quite delicious as was the dessert. Our waitstaff person was friendly, informative and efficient. He made us feel welcome and appreciated."

  • "We returned to Captain Bill's for the clam chowder - it's outstanding. Plenty of clams and not overloaded with potatoes. I had the blackened tilapia, my wife had the halibut special. Both were terrific. My mother-in-law wolfed down her haddock - so she must have enjoyed it. Will return."

  • "It seems very outdated. Our table area was very dirty. Crumbs on the cushions and on the floor along with winter feet salt stains. We were the first clients at 5:00 so you think it would have started out cleaned than that. We ate in the bar area and all of the carpet in the bar area really needed a vacuum. For opening, someone could have noticed. The coconut shrimp was stellar but our daughters pasta was bland. I wish the beans were fresh instead of frozen. My husband had beans too, and had multiple cranberries I had only one total. Our waitress was very sweet, but other than the coconut shrimp the food this time and dirty atmosphere were not worth the price point. Sorry:("

  • "My family feels that the tartar sauce is too sweet and so it deters one member from eating fish that they love. Should also offer a basic Ranch salad dressing for salads. They had a Peppercorn Salad dressing. Although this is more of an upscale restaurant, younger people like to explore and are use to eating more basic choices and not "out of the ordinary" items. So it would help to have these on hand even if they were in an individual prepacked item that might be used in To Go orders. We do not dine her very frequently but had a good time."

  • "I think it is unexceptable to have a 5:00 pm reservation and have absolutely no one show up or talk to you until 5:12 pm. Not one person at the restaurant said just a moment or give some sort of explaination for no hostess being available for seating. Waitress didn't seem to attentive and walked away as she asked how everything was. The cedar salmon was fantastic. The pasta with shrimp was so so. Huge surprise that they doused the 3 shrimp in salt. Ruined the taste. I love the fire pit; but for the price and lack of service, we will consider other places first."

  • "We had dinner at Captian Bill's on Friday to celebrate my birthday. I live about six blocks away, so I'm in there fairly often. I particularly like drinks around the fireplace in the bar in the colder months of the year. On this trip most of us had the Friday Fish Fry, which was solidly good but not great. The ciabatta rolls with 3 kinds of flavored butter were a big hit (as always). Most of our party had cups of the clam chowder and everybody who did really liked it, even a couple of people who don't particularly like clam chowder. We also had several orders of a shrimp flatbread appetizer that was quite good. My Dad and brother both had salmon. My brother's girlfriend had the crab cakes and really liked them."

  • "With a great location on the lake, dining at Captain Bill’s is almost worth it just for the view. But the service is slow, the staff frequently gets orders wrong, and the food is prepared poorly. During our latest visit my wife ordered the balsamic vinaigrette dressing on her salad but got oil & vinegar instead - and the bottle of vinegar was delivered empty to the table. After ten minutes (no waitress) I took it to the wait station to have it refilled. This was done, but apple cider vinegar was used instead of red wine vinegar (yuck!). Later, our drink order was incomplete, and the chocolate cake for desert was in two different sizes. One slice was normal, but the other was barely half an inch thick."

  • "Lovely little seafood joint. It can be expensive for people like myself who do not eat out at the finer establishments much. We went all out (drinks, appetizers, full dinners) and the cost was in the neighborhood of $100 for the two of us. But for a special occasion (as this was), it was worth it. This is the sort of restaurant that makes me wish I was in a higher tax bracket so I could frequent much more often."

  • "Went there for dinner on 2-14-14 and service was very poor in my eyes. They needed much more staff. To get a drink at the bar it was a 45 minute wait which was unacceptable. They were also over an hour behind on reservation times. Food was a little cold, but still tasted good."

  • "We scheduled to go to Captain Bills for their Valentines special. We signed in and decided to go into the bar for a drink. There were only two bartenders behind the bar. Only one was working with the people standing in line while the other drinks coming in from the wait staff. We waited 20 minutes while other people came in after us and were served. Finally the bartender came up to two of us that had been there all along. I said that she should take his drink first since he was there before me. She just said " If you are not ready to order then I will have to move on." I said "We are ready, just take his first" She just walked away. Unbelievable! We finally were seated for dinner 35 minutes after our scheduled time."

  • "It appears that Captain Bill's is a hotspot for those special occasions. With Valentine's Day falling on a Friday it made the restaurant even more attractive for people celebrating the occasion. We had reservations for 7:15 but didn't get a table until 7:45. I'm not blaming anyone as it was just very busy there. The wait staff were all doing their best to fill drink orders, bus tables, seat people and serve them their food. Overall it was a good dining experience but I would hesitate going back on a holiday that falls on a Friday or Saturday."

  • "We enjoy trekking across town to 'Captain Bill's', located at the former 'Hatch Cover' Restaurant in Middleton for a decent seafood dinner and a lively bar to have a before dinner drink around the big blazing indoor gas fire pit and a winter's night view of the nearby Lake Mendota shoreline. With Valentine's Day and a special dinner advertised for couples, we made 5:00PM reservations. When we arrived early, the doors were shut and there was a waiting line at the door on a cold night. When the doors opened at 5:00 PM, the place was ice cold, the staff was still stocking the bar and scurrying around to prepare tables before taking any orders. The meal and drinks were good, but the poor preparation for a busy night was not acceptable."

We had already decided on our appetizer wine and dinner, We were not in a hurry as each course took quite sometime. Food was very good but service was slow and follow up was lacking. It felt like they were short staffed for such a busy evening."

  • "Lobster and steak special for $25/person on valentines day was extremely good! Unfortunately, they overbooked the restaurant very badly. 6:30 reservations didn't get seated until 7:45 at the earliest, and there was nowhere to sit at the bar and wait, the bar which only had one bartender. There were so many people complaining at staff which made it worse. It's not the staffs fault! They were very polite and accommodating. Overall it was fine. A little annoying but still top notch food."

Reservations stated free glass of champagne with every meal but waitress a) didn't know about this and b) said it only applied with the steal and lobster meal. A bit of false advertising.   • "For starters, the infamous as seen on "The Food Network" New England Clam Chowder is unlike any other clam chowder you've ever had, because it tastes so dramatically different. I still cant decide wether this is good or bad. The crab cakes we ordered as an appetizer, were served cold and undercooked. The mixed grill entree continued the undercooked theme, since our Mahi Mahi was raw in the middle. Our waitress stated it was okay though because it was "sashimi" grade. I'm not even going to comment at the falicy of that response. The scallops were at least cooked, but yet still served cold. The only entree served appropriately was the salmon. In the end, losing my appetite from the overly sweet Sauvignon Blanc was a blessing in disguise."
