Diner Reviews
  • "food was good as per usual, but server had tables inside and outside, which means we had to flag someone down ever time we needed something, and it took forever to get stuff...boo..."

  • "We had the haddock which was recommend. It was tough, dry, and tasted old. We were told by the server that fresh seafood arrived daily. When we asked to speak to a manager we were told she was too busy with bar customers to address our concerns; yet, only two people were sitting at the bar. We were offered free desserts which we declined. We paid the full amount of the check, plus a good tip (it wasn't the servers fault) and left forever. Had they offered us a "fresh" fish our whole experience may have been different."

  • "We were seated immediately upon entry, excellent service and the New England Clam Chowder outstanding."

  • "We were so excited to eat at Captain Bill's. We were seated right away at a table with a great view on the patio (table 99). Although the restaurant was busy, there seemed to be plenty of servers. The problem was that none of them acknowledged our table. Tables seated afterwards were given drinks and acknowledged -- we didn't even get a hello. After 20 minutes, we left... this was the first time we have ever left a restaurant. There were 3 servers standing by the patio door, about 5 feet from where our table was -- they didn't even seem to comprehend that it was their lack of service that was causing us to leave. We went to Joey's seafood instead -- great service, great food, and less expensive too."

  • "A beautiful evening, a birthday celebration, and the patio at Captain Bill's was the perfect combo. Friend, Birthday Girl, and I had a nice table a slight but courteous distance from other diners (we're loud talkers, so we really appreciated that!)... we didn't get the prime view of the water, but we did enjoy the gamboling rabbits on the lawn in front of us. A platter of mussels made a nice starter. I had the scallops, Friend had the broiled haddock, BG had the crab cakes, and we were all very satisfied with our choices. Attentive but relaxed server did a great job making sure we had everything we wanted. Captain Bill's is just enough of a luxury that you feel like it's been a special evening, but it's not a fancy or stuffy restaurant."

  • "As always the food was great and it was a perfect night for sitting out on the patio. Noise level was never a problem."

  • "We had 13 members in our group ranging in age from 1-70. All had a good experience. We loved being able to eat outdoors and view the lake."

  • "The kitchen was short-staffed, so our party of 4 waited a LONG time for what turned out to be pretty mediocre fare. The setting on the lake is pretty, and we sat outside on the balcony, which was nice. But, the "homemade" Hollandaise sauce lacked ANY acid. My petit filet was very good and cooked well, but the vegetables were cold (and after the long wait, we were not about to send them back--we figured we'd never see them again!). An off night. Really, they should have just not accepted walk-ins if they couldn't serve us properly. Then they could have focused on their reserved tables."

  • "Our group of women friends go to Captain Bill's once each year in the summer to sit on the deck eat good food and converse. We all (7 of us) arrived between 6 and 6:15. We all ordered our meals at about 6:20. They finally arrived at about 7:35. Yes, that's right about an hour and 15 minutes later. It is true that there was a large group (15-20 people?) who ordered and then got served ahead of us. But we were served at least 45 minutes after that group had been served. As I looked around I could see that tables of 2-4 people were waiting as long as we had after ordering. When we finally got served two of the people at our table said their food was no long hot but slightly warm. The manager took $20. off. Our group won't go back."

  • "We ordered 2 mojitios and it took a very long time to get our drinks. They were the worst mojitios I ever had (we don't think they added any liquor and they were very bland. The food was good but not great."

  • "The food was great and the staff was courteous, fun and competent. This is what we expected, since we've been coming to Captain Bill for over 40 years."
    Dined on 6/21/2014
  • "Food was subpar. The only flavor found in all four enters was excessive salt. The fishfry was dry and overcooked as were the two salmon entrea. This restaurant is a shadow of its former self."

  • "We made a last minute reservation for a large group. They were very accommodating. Everyone loved the food and the ambiance. I've lived out of state for a long time and it's hard to find a good brandy oldfashioned sweet. The bar tender made it perfectly. The lobster tail was good, but not very filling for the price. Thanks for a great meal!"

  • "We have had excellent meals at captain Bill's in the past but this last visit the scallops were perfectly seared but lacked any flavor and the lobster had good taste but was overcooked and slightly chewy"

  • "Reserved via Open Table only 15 min ahead of reservation time. Got there, passed the line, and scored an outside table. Fantastic. Places was swamped, our server was maybe overwhelmed - took three tries to get a drink with no ice. All other items were delivered promptly. Oysters - warm and sour smelling. Shrimp scamp - really good. Fried fish special - not bad, small serving for the price. Would go back on a sunny afternoon for drinks and to try the cheese curds."

  • "We had not been to this restaurant in a long time because the food was just average. Our experience with the food was the same this time around but despite the mediocre food we enjoyed our dinner at Captain Bill's. The service was excellent and the ambiance was very pleasant."

  • "crab cake and the Friday shrimp special were very good"

  • "We sat on the outdoor patio and it was wonderful. The seafood was great. The clam chowder is the best anywhere. "

  • "This was my first full dinner at Captain Bill's and the food & service were a disappointment. I ordered the steamed shrimp & had to clean many of them out myself. A friend ordered the spinach salad which came with little else besides a hard-boiled egg, some red onion, & maybe 2 handfuls of spinach. It was lackluster as an entree, to say the least. Our server also needs add'l training/experience, as she often forgot who ordered what (despite being only a party of 4) & made several trips to the table before fulfilling simple requests, such as glasses of water. I will return again for drinks (& maybe coconut shrimp) on the patio, but never for dinner."

  • "We had a great waiter, but the featured entree was less than adequate. If that was a feature, then should have had more of it in order to appreciate it! Good views, however and pleasant atmosphere!"

  • "We were looking for someplace to go for fish on Friday night and decided to go to one of our favorites, Captain Bill's. We had a fish fry and a Walleye dinner. They had a walleye fish fry, but they ran out. Just as well, I wanted the dinner. Fish was excellent, clam chowder was excellent, and great bread. An overall outstanding experience, plus we used Open Table and got in right away."

  • "The food we enjoyed had wonderful flavor....you just need to be patient and anticipate delays. Wait staff was friendly and the order was accurate. The bartenders were overwhelmed by the demand. The restaurant would benefit from a remodel by replacing the plastic outdoor seating, throwing a fresh coat of paint on and replacing the rather dirty carpet. If you go, dress casually and a laid back attitude and you'll enjoy the tranquil view of the lake and the tasty food...have a drink before you arrive. "

  • "Fri p.m. at a good seafood restaurant was, as expected, really hopping. We didn't know about the deck for dining al fresco until we arrived, but would definitely request a table there next time. The walleye special was excellent. Fantastic and well prepared fish! Although the steak cut fries were a bit on the hot table, dried out side, the cole slaw was definitely to our liking. Ditto the warm rolls. And the key lime pie is awesome. We had no difficulty getting a reservation, even though we didn't request one until mid-late afternoon Fri. Were seated immediately at a window table, as requested. Good service from a waiter we've had before, in spite of how very busy he was. Not his fault mixed drink service was slow. "

  • "Great spot for outside dining on a warm and pleasant evening--service & food are good and lakefront view is hard to beat. "
    Dined on 5/29/2014
  • "The timing of the meal could have been better. Long wait for initial contact and long wait between soup and meal. Chowder, Crab Cakes and Grilled Salmon were good. Pan-seared Walleye was not. I received the dish and it didn't look great. It was burnt black on the bottom. It also tasted fishy. The waiter stopped by to ask how everything was and I indicated I was not happy with my dish. The manager asked if he could bring a new order and I said I would like the Coconut Shrimp instead. Those were good, but I prefer the Red Lobster version. The manager was very apologetic, but failed to provide anything for the bad experience. We probably won't go back."

  • "Our recent Sunday evening visit for an early dinner had us waiting a long time for service, menus, ordering and delivery of food. All four of us had the lighter dinner options: Salmon was good. Two had the petite tenderloins- very small & over-done (both women felt ill afterwards!) Crab cake was small and had no flavor. Our waiter was very busy trying to serve the outside deck patrons, he did his best but admitted to being very under-staffed."

  • "I ordered swordfish, the daily special. It came out cool in the center. The server took itback and had it heated up, but it was only mediocre. First negative experience at this place after eating there for many years"
    Dined on 5/24/2014
  • "Our server was trying hard, but he was too busy to be attentive. My wine was awful, I'm not sure if it was the wine or if the bottle had been open too long, and it took a very long time to get our drinks. The food was good, but small portions. "

  • "Both the food and the service was excellent! We always enjoy our dinner at Captain Bill's"

  • "Servers were friendly, polite and knowledgeable about menu. "

  • "The waitress was close to plain rude. Walleye was overcooked. Overall the food did not taste very fresh."

  • "Waitress had to be reminded several times about several different things....for instance - silverware, napkins, straw for drink, spoon to stir sugar into tea. She also kept getting things wrong - one person ordered wine, got iced tea - appetizer came out twice - one dinner came out wrong - she literally took coleslaw off of one diners plate and put it on another diners plate. Our table was not ready until 7:30 even though reservations were at 7:15. Blue gill dinner tasted like rubber and was very fishy tasting."

  • "We've been going to Captan Bills for years, pre-child and post-child and have always loved it. My daughter loves calamari and CB has one of her favorites. This Mother's Day was our first brunch visit. First, we were not sure what our day would be like so failed to make reservations any where. However, when I googled best brunch places CBs popped up with the ability to book a reservation on Open Table, I love this option. 20 minutes later we were seated with a great view of the lake. Food was great, daughter ate too many sweets and we all went home full and ready for a nap! They even had a nice sculpture to keep the shrimp cocktail cold! Thanks for including chowder-best ever. Once again, loved it. "

  • "Overall it was a good dining experience for Mother's Day. The Service was a little slow to start, but seemed to pick up by the time we were almost finished. Steak wasn't cooked for one of us to out liking. These things wouldn't keep us from coming back, but it's not a place we think of to frequent on a regular basis, more of a special occasion place. "

  • "We had the stuffed tilapia and the pan-seared walleye. Also the chowder and a salad. It was all good to excellent. The service was very good."

  • "Started at the bar for a drink before dinner, and drinks did not taste very good. Had a nice table by the window, so we could see the lake which was great, but it was super cold by the window. Vents were right there blowing cold air onto us (which also made our food cold fast). Ordered a walleye and a crab cake. Crab cake was good, garlic mashed potatoes were not very good - didn't taste very garlicy and were dry. Walleye was fishy and got cold. Service was totally fine, but would not go back again as the food just wasn't very yummy or satisfying."

  • "We went to Captain Bills per my daughters request for her birthday. The restaurant was not busy. The server seemed rushed and attentiveness was lacking. We had to ask to put in ad drink order as well as appetizer order. The drinks took forever to arrive. The remainder of the meal did arrive in a timely manner. We did need to track him down to order a 2nd drink One of the reasons we have chosen captain bills in the past is because of the nice GF menu options. When I mentioned to the waiter that other GF restaurants offer GF bread his response was "We do the best we can." The food was okay. My husband got the petite tenderloin which was very fatty and did not seem like a tenderloin at all but he did not want to complain. The rest okay. "

  • "I've already recommended you to friends after our dinner there last Sunday. On a cold rainy day the fireplace was mighty welcome! Few people there meant we got plenty of attention. Loved the crusty fresh hot rolls, good food, and the best key lime pie I've ever had! The coupon you sent out helped with the cost which was not exorbitant. We'll be back. "

  • "We arrived at 7:00 pm (we had a reservation) and were seated immediately. Our waitress was new and it seemed she did not have any help. We ordered appetizers and they took a long time to arrive. One appetizer didn't arrive until about an hour later. We ordered our main entre when we ordered the appetizers, but we did not get any bread, salad or soup for probably 2 hours later, then our main entre came. The food was good but service not. When you arrive on time you don't expect to wait 2 hours or more for your food. The manager did comp our wine and appetizers which was very commendable. The food was good once we got it. We have eaten here before and never had this big of a problem with the service. I am sure we will try it again."
