Diner Reviews
  • "The food and service was GREAT as always. Ask for Domenic his recommendations are wonderful. He told us abut the Salmon special (to die for) and the rib eye steak gorgonzola. The salads were served on a cold plate. Try the BOMB for dessert!!!"

  • "Appetizers were okay, the server was commendable, but the entrees lacked any flavor at all. The dessert prices were WAY out of line for what was served. Will not go back, nor recommend to anyone. We were very disappointed."

  • "Went for early weekday dinner and enjoyed one of the daily specials plus a pasta from the regular menu. Waiter knew dishes and recommended a wine we would not have considered that was great with our dinners. Like the whole experience and thought put into guests. Starting with the olives and roasted garlic at table to nibble, big selection of entrees, appreciate that salad choices come w entrees, and the mini cannoli is a freak option for a bite of dessert. It's a little noisy when crowded but our three visits have always been good and so we recommend to anyone who wants good food and nice service in a pretty and comfortable setting."

  • "Had not eaten at Capri for a few years and now recall why. They consistently do not keep to your reservation time. With a reservation it is always a 20-30 minute wait. Food is very average."

  • "Always excellent service and the food is always good. Capri in Downers Grove is one of our favorite places to dine in the western suburbs."

  • "5 Star from Service to Food. Busy Saturday Night sat within 5 minutes of our reservation!!! Service was impeccable. The waiter who seemed to know EVERYONE in the room was named Dom. Ask for HIM!!!! He recommended the Calamari Capri it was wonderful with a hint of red pepper flakes. The veal parm and salmon special were great!!! Both served with either a house salad or cesar or soup of the day. Too bad we were full the Banana Fosters served table side looked yummy.....Truly a GREAT place and we will be back."

  • "Been to Capri many times and EVERY TIME is gets better and better. Seated at a table by the window we were greeted by Domenic (see his reviews). He helped us decide on our wine (A Superb Super Tuscan) guided us through your decisions... Homemade rigatoni with ground sausage and peas and Seabass with these delicious sweet and sour peppers. A delightful meal!!! Keep up the good work!!!!"

  • "We were seated 40 mins past out reservation time. Bar area too small and people constantly bumping into you as we waited. The food was good but we were annoyed at that point. Our table for 6 was really meant to seat 4. Odd seating, squished together, and not enough table room. I would not go with a group larger than 4 any time soon."

  • "First visit here and we liked the restaurant and the food. Despite a reservation on a Saturday night, we waited 50 minutes to be seated. Management was apologetic with drinks, which I appreciate, but that very long wait drains you when you're looking forward to a relaxing dinner with friends. Add to that tight tables, high noise level, and another near hour wait for your meal and you have a less than desirable dining experience. Everybody felt tired and worn out rather than satisfied and relaxed when we left. We just didn't enjoy ourselves. I also noted there was a party of about 25+ which disproportionately ties up too many tables for the capacity of this restaurant and dramatically raises the noise level. They need a party room."

  • "I went to Capri for the first time on Saturday evening with two other people. We all agreed the food was outstanding. However, the restaurant was extremely loud. It's kind of a small place and each table is pushed pretty close to its neighbor. It was difficult to have a conversation it was so loud. We kept having to lean closer to speak to each other and were constantly saying "what?" Or "I can't hear you". I would try it out again maybe on a weekday evening just because the food was so good, but will never go back on the weekend."

  • "Good looking restaurant, large choice menu, excellent service and well prepared and attractive food. Noise level too loud for us and it was 3/4 full that evening. Live music was great."

  • "I have been to Capri before and it is always a favorite. It is small, and the tables are very close together. If you are a small group of 2-4, I would ask for a window table. They do accomodate large groups, but the restaurant is deceiving in its size. Food is usually excellent, this time not so much. Was seated promptly and service was very good."

  • "We always have a great time at Capri, even when it is as packed and busy as it was Saturday night. Great food and great service. Hard to beat this place in Downers Grove!!!!!"

  • "Capri has the appeal of bid city flavors with the quaintness of the small town atmosphere. The dishes were big on flavor. I had the the" Pollo Forget About It" and it was delicious. I usually go traditional, especially when I go to a restaurant for the first time. I opted to go out of my comfort zone with this new dish and was quite pleasantly surprised. The chicken was crispy on the outside and moist on the inside. The tomato, onion and olive balsamic sauce was heavenly! I was transported to a new world of culinary delight. My fellow patrons had equally tasty dishes which included scallop and shrimp linguine and sea bass. The salads were adequate but a tad plain. We did not opt for dessert. All in all, I would definitely go back!!!"

  • "I brought my boyfriend to this restaurant as a birthday treat, neither of us had been there before. What a wonderful experience! Our server was very friendly and informative, and his service was excellent. My boyfriend and I are really big foodies, and the food was excellent. It almost felt as if we had gone out of town, but we were in the heart of Downers Grove!"

  • "Would recommend this restaurant to anyone. Only negatives would be that the tables were too close together and the waiting area is very small. +++ are meatballs and calamari. Give it a try!"

  • "Capri is our 'go to' restaurant for special occasions. This Valentine's Day was no different. Valentine's Day is also my husband's birthday, which makes things twice as special. The restaurant was bustling, as expected on Valentine's Day. And though we were not able to have our favorite waiter this evening, we had a wonderful server, Dan, who took spectacular care of us the entire evening! Capri will continue to be 'our' restaurant for all special occasions."

  • "Went for valentines day and it was a great choice for the occasion. The food was delicious. Our waiter was one of the friendliest and attentive waiter ive ever had anywhere. My only complaint was that our reservation was for 9, we showed up at 845 and did not get seated until 930. Others who where waiting by us had been waiting for almost an hour. So make sure you take into account that they are not very good about getting you in for your reservation on time. Other than that we had a wonderful time there."

  • "Made a last minute reservation on Open table and wrote that we were celebrating a birthday. We were greeted warmly and showed to a window table with ROSE PETALS on them for the birthday. Food was delicious, homemade rigatoni and vodka and my favorite Chilean Seabass. The sauce on the Seabass was to die for, peppadew sweet and sour delicious!!! Will return, the server Domenic was amazing. Ask for him!!!"

  • "Reservations made. Waited (with 2 children) in a cold hallway for 40 minutes. It was clear that regulars were seated before us even though they came in the door much later. No acknowledgement, no offering of anything. After one hour we left."

  • "We went here for our anniversary. I lived in Italy for 6 months and this place seemed to have some pretty authentic options on the menu that you would not find other places. Our food and wine was very good, but I would NOT recommend the tiramisu--it was very dry and there was some sort of whipped frosting on top. The service was ok--our server was very interested in the people next to us far more than us and it took a while to order food. The atmosphere is fantastic though. I definitely recommend a reservation as the venue is quite small, but intimate. There is also a small bar if you just want to go for a drink, but it is not in the bar scene."

  • "Very disappointed New Years Eve when seated we were given a very limited menu (limited entries, no salads or soups) with higher prices. No one had told us when we made reservations and nothing on the web site indicated a limited menu. We left!!! Not sure the folks we were with, who had not been to Capri, will go back."

  • "We got there and they were busy and we would have to wait even though we has reservations. The hostess went out of her way to get us seated a.s.a.p. and with the table of our choosing. She deserves an outstanding rating for her efforts. The waitress we had also went out of her way to make the meal very enjoyable. Then there was the Music, it too was great."

  • "We were a party of six, celebrating christmas early. Our table was waiting for us, the service is always so very good, thanks to Dominic. The food was served hot, great tasting, plus plenty of food too. It's our place to meet, relax and enjoy the food."

  • "I ordered pollo saltimbocco. It was just okay. There was something about the taste of the chicken that reminded me of fast food chicken. My husband liked his salmon, but not the vegetables that came with it. I was disappointed that they only had Italian dressing for the salad. It was too sharp with the vinegar taste. They should invest in a bottle of Ranch dressing for some variety. The other options were Caesar salad, which I don't like, and a soup that did not sound appetizing."

  • "I submitted a review a week ago, but see that it is not posted. We too endured a long wait for our table. While our reservation was at 6:30 due to a Christmas program we were attending, our table was not ready until 7:10. And that was after checking with the hostess multiple times. I asked that she share our concern with the manager, but had no confidence that she would. Therefore, I did. The manager was extremely concerned and gracious and offered complimentary drinks and/or dessert. However, the meal ended up being rushed and desserts as well as our remaining entrees ended up as carry-outs. Thus, I would not consider it a very pleasant meal or dining experience. I would ask that management consider if they are a good fit for Open Table."

  • "The room is so visually appealing, even if it is a bit loud. At Christmas time the view of the train station Christmas tree lights really adds to the atmosphere. The food is great! Each dish was so fresh and not over salted or otherwise spiced. Everything was served HOT. Nothing sat in the kitchen cooling off. The little tortillinis in the chicken soup were soft little pillows of wonderfulness. Fried calamari was tender to the last piece even as it cooled. Pasta was tender and the seafood was fresh fresh fresh. We'll definitely be back!"

  • "The food at Capri is always great, even if you want to change a meal around, they always do it willingly. The food is server hot, with a nice presentation . Of course our server Dominick is the best ever. He remembers what we like to order, recommends something he thinks we would like, and gets everything right. Angelo is a hoot...we love having him serve us as well. We always have a great evening at Capri, Brian does a great job as the owner."

  • "Capri is a wonderful restaurant. Great service. Spectacular food. We did have to wait a bit on a table even after reserving and the hostess was a little unfriendly about communicating to us. However the gentleman that I would assume was the manager on duty that night was wonderful. Our server was so nice and patient and just a great personality. The food was amazing! Thanks!"

  • "We had reservations for 7:00PM. The hostess advised that my request for a table by the window would delay our seating. After 10-15 minutes I asked for a best estimate of when we would be seated, telling the hostess we would take any table. At around 7:20 the manager advised we should be seated within 15-20 minutes. At 7:30 I asked the hostess how many parties were ahead of us. She responded “four” and that she hoped we would be seated before 8:00. At this time a party came out from the bar area to ask when they would be seated for their 6:45PM reservation. At 7:35 I looked on “Open Table” and saw Capri was still taking reservations for 7:45 although they had not yet seated the 6:45 group(s). We left and ate elsewhere."

  • "We made a reservation for7:30 for our sons birthday. We were not Seated until 8:30. There were others with the same issue. Seems like there is No point in making reservations here unless you know the owner."

  • "We had great customer service! Our server Dan was excellent! We wanted to order calamari and he recommended the calamari Capri which was some of the best we have ever had (highly recommend it)! He was also kind enough to switch out a martini I ordered that I didn't care for, and replaced it with something I did like. My entree was so-so (it was a pasta special with shrimp and scallops, but there was hardly any seafood in it). My boyfriend liked his entree. Overall a good experience and loved the live music and atmosphere. Would go back again to try another dish, the pasta is homemade and excellent."
