Diner Reviews
  • "We hadn't been to Capo for about 5 years as we live out of town. It was even better than we remembered. Our dinners were delicious, the service warm and full of helpful recommendations and the wine list very impressive. It is definitely one of our favorite restaurants."

  • "There is not one thing this restaurant could improve. Perfect. Food, wine, service, music, art, ambiance, even the cool dishes… Cannot be beat. My family has been to 5-star restaurants all over the world. We have never had better food or a better experience than at Capo. Also, Capo is CONSISTENTLY good. Not like restaurants where you have a great experience and then go back and it does not live up to your memory. EVERY visit to Capo is perfect. Everytime we bring new people to experience it they agree as well. Never had a dish that was not PERFECT. So far we have had at least 12 different people not believe it until they experienced it and ALL agreed. Don't miss this hidden gem in Santa Monica!"

  • "Great food, great atmosphere. The wine is over priced. ($50 corkage fee??)"

  • "This restaurant is full service. They are mindful of every detail of your dining experience. My second time here and I'm looking forward to returning."

  • "Had high hopes for this place. Wanted it to be amazing, and at this price-point it should have been stunning! Unfortunately it was just "ok" at best. Had a variety of dishes from cured meats, to pasta, to shrimp and NY Steak–all average to disappointing. Spent 5 minutes cutting the char from my steak, and my wife spent 10 minutes shifting through soggy shrimp and run-of-the-mill cured meats. They happily swapped a few of the more problematic dishes. Still, with each dish served, our level of satisfaction decreased along with our faith in their ability to deliver a competent dish. When the wine is the highlight of the evening, the restaurant has failed. In the end, it was a letdown and we walked away from an unmemorable experience."

  • "We selected to dine at Capo for our Anniversary and truly received the royal treatment from our server and others from Capo. This is one of our favorite places because the food is so special and the services always wonderful. We were is for a special treat because it happened to be a "star studded evening" so there was an additional positive energy in the restaurant."

  • "Everything was superb and decadent and delicious. Pricey, but for a special occasion, it is a great spot."

  • "Sorry to say but very overrated and over priced. In NYC or Las Vegas Capo would be very average at best. Save your money."

  • "Wilted romaine was not so hot. Lobster risotto had very little lobster. We all had heartburn after the meal. "

  • "Was looking for a good steakhouse on the westside and this place came highly recommended and did not disappoint. From the bbq'd cesar salad to the NY steak. Perfectly cooked, smokey flavor from the natural wood burning bbq and the truffle meat sauce pasta.... to die for! I look forward to coming back to try all of the other amazing looking dishes including the filet and fish selections. "

  • "Food is excellent. Wine prices are outrageously overpriced. Markups can get up to 300-400 percent from retail. Service felt rushed, they try and turn tables. Better to eat late or just make sure to set the pace yourself. Very expensive restaurants should never make someone feel rushed. Go with the pastas, they are some of the best I have ever had."

  • "The best high end Italian in LA County. The menu is extensive . The food was excellent as was the service. Try something with Truffles or IL FORNO. This is a great spot for a special dinner because it is very expensive. However, you get what you pay for."

  • "Over the years we have been to Capo on special occasions and have never been disappointed, however we now find ourselves going more regularly. The service, ambiance and food deserve 6 stars (like in the movie Spinal Tap they're an 11 one more than 10). We are already looking forward to planning our next visit."

  • "As a NYer, I'm always looking for good pasta in LA. This place has it but at a price.... an expensive one. Huge menu and wine list, almost too much."

  • "Outstanding steaks. Great pasta. Fabulous wine list. Experienced and helpful servers. Well oiled machine. Fantastic soufflés and blackberry crumble. Sophisticated menu but yet simple and casual. One of the very best restaurants in Los Angeles"

  • "The steak was one of the best I have ever eaten! $175 for a huge piece of meat (2 people shared). I ordered wine by the glass. My mistake was not asking the price. When we received the bill I almost died. $35 a glass!! Dinner for 4 was almost $1,000 before the tip!"

  • "I'm a longtime road warrior, amateur chef, professional eater! IMHO, the most important thing when choosing a place to dine is "trust"! Trust in the food, trust in the experience, trust in the hope that your expectations will be exceeded! I trust Capo. I have been coming to this place for several years. I have been there through different stages of my life as well as the restaurant's. From hot new comer, to trendy A-lister, to solid, modern practitioner of vanguard cuisine. I have found Capo to always be evolving in taste, preparation as well as presentation and crowd. But, always trusted to deliver a superb experience. My latest vista….two nights ago…incredible, again. Put the lobster risotto at the top of any list you have!"

  • "The food is always incredible. My complaint is they cram too may tables into that space. I could hear everything being said by the two tables next to us. The white wine by the glass was $25.00 per glass. Had I known the price I would have looked at bottles. Be prepared to pay $300-$400 for dinner (with drinks). If the price is not an issue and you want a fabulous dinner then Capo is the spot."

  • "Busy, crowded, noisy. Food is good but not outstanding. Unassuming from the outside, attractive on the inside. Wines by the glass are expensive."

  • "I took my boyfriend here for his birthday. It was one of the best meals I've ever had! The menu is full of amazing options. We ended up ordering several appetizers, a pasta dish, and desserts to share. The grilled caesar salad and grilled octopus were incredible, as was the burrata. I had flourless chocolate souffle for dessert that was light and airy and a perfect finish. They have quite a few servers, so you are well cared for while dining. I didn't want for anything from water refills to menu suggestions to help with their extensive wine list. I think you would be happy with anything you ordered here. Prices are high, but it's worth it, especially for special occasion dinners."

  • "Visited Capo several times and, while the prices are extortionate, the food is always excellent. I reserved Saturday's table weeks in advance so was disappointed to be placed inches from the neighbouring table, whose occupant had already requested a table change. The rectangular neighbouring 2-tops had been created from one four top, with the table orientation rotated 90 degrees in order to fit into the tiny space, thus we were seated so far away from our partners that conversation was impossible. With no sign of the maitre D, the next in command haughtily assured us that these were good tables, and he had no trouble filling them. We secured a reservation elsewhere and left. Given the prices charged, clientelle deserve better respect."

  • "We go to Capo every time I'm in town. And when I lived in LA, at least once a month. The only reason I knock off stars, is that I reserve certain seats at the bar every single time... And pretty far in advance. The last few times I've entered only to see someone in the seats I requested. This is just bad customer service for a "regular". Half the time it's the owner, who regardless of the thousands of dollars you spend and the numerous times he has seen you or met you, is terribly rude and cold. If I didn't love Brian, the bartender so much, I wouldn't go. The food is great, but There are so many delicious places to eat in LA. If the owner is there, I'd skip it."

  • "we enjoyed a delicious dinner and great service. It was our anniversary and i asked for a quiet table. We were put in the middle of the room right next to another couple…..not my idea of a romantic dinner. we will go back!"

  • "Service and food exceeded all expectations. Spectacular! The only issue is cost. Can't help but feel overcharged. Not just a little expensive. WAY expensive."

  • "Went there for our 1 year anniversary celebration, and we could not have been treated more nicely! Everyone from the Maitre D to the bartender to our waiter and table servers gave us outstanding attention and care! We had not been there before so we went with the tasting menu. And it was fabulous! It consisted of 8 courses and each time they brought us a course, we each got something different (except for the meat course of filet mignon). Therefore we were served 15 different dishes of exceptional cuisine! We absolutely loved it! Even though their wine list is epic, we brought out own bottle and the corkage fee was $50, which we thought was a bit steep, but everything else about the night was resplendent!"

  • "This is one of the most expensive restaurants in LA, but that's fine when everything is up to standard. While some of the food was outstanding - the steaks were out of this world - not all of it was: the selection of sorbets ranged from the good, through to unpalatable mush. Our waitress was very hit and miss: we kept asking for the second bottle of white wine for our table, and she repeatedly refused to bring it: odd. Our table was excellent: for four people, you do need to be in one of the central areas, as round the edges this place packs them in to such an extent, you become part of your neighbors' conversation and evening."

  • "All food was excellent except for the special- Fritto Misto (at an outrageous price); this dish typically is a wide variety of seafood with a few vegetables; here it was vegetables and a few pieces of shrimp----very disappointing and way overpriced!!!!! Also our first bottle of wine at $70 was corked; maitre recommended an equivalent substitute which we accepted, but when bill came it was for $115; we pointed this out to the waiter who apologized and changed the price to $75"

  • "The burrata was amazing, as was my venison. Crème brulee bread pudding was mediocre. And my friend's pork chop was kind of bland. I still enjoyed the dinner!"

  • "My third dinner at Capo was as excellent as the first two. The food is delicious and the service is notably friendly and accommodating. The dining room is extremely "cozy" with the maximum number of tables fitted into the space as possible, making it a bit awkward when exiting by a table and trying not to get your sweater into their pasta. Still a stellar experience. Looking forward to going back. My favorites: basil vegetable salad, corn ravioli, blackberry cobbler."

  • "From the moment we walked through two sets of dark velvet curtains (not nearly as weird as that sounds), to the moment we reluctantly left, dinner at Capo was one of the ten best meals I've ever had. We took all our server's suggestions (the guy could sell ice to Eskimos but we loved him) and each dish was even better than the last. Very expensive evening and worth every penny."

  • "Very good food but the wine list is annoyingly overpriced. We ordered the tasting menu and one bottle of wine and our bill was over $600 for two. Not as good as French laundry for price. However the pasta dish and beef dish were outstanding. Desserts were not my favorite. Very cool atmosphere with intriguing art displays."

  • "I completely agree with the prior review that the food was excellent, the service was just okay (not once did they come back to check that our entree was to our liking), the atmosphere was okay (pretty darn loud and the tables are so close together we could hear the conversations going on around us), and the prices are RIDICULOUS! We eat out a lot and don't mind paying a premium for a meal that is an exceptional experience. There was nothing exceptional to justify their prices. The cheapest glass of champagne was $30 and $22 for a bowl of soup is stupid. There are so many very good restaurants in the Santa Monica/Brentwood area that there is no need to go back to Capo -- unless they reconsider their prices."

  • "The food is excellent....the service OK, the atmosphere is mediocre and the costs are outrageous!! We go occasionally because the food is very well prepared, the menu is interesting and the presentations are well done. But will only spend that kind of money once in a while........Melisse is a much better dining place at the prices charged."
