CapischeA Pleasant SurpriseWe were lucky enough to be staying at the Hotel Wailea where Capische is located. I usually am disappointed with resort restaurants but not this time. First of all, the service was excellent, friendly but proper. The food was very well prepared, the chef has a delicate hand with flavors, letting the intrinsic flavors of the food speak for themselves. We shared the cioppino for the entree and, yes, it is expensive (I would say overly) but each morsel of seafood was perfect and the seasoning delightful. All the goodness started when someone called to confirm our reservations and I asked about bringing our children, they are 10, 7 and 5yo. She assured me it would be fine and really made me feel at ease.
Once we arrived the staff went out of their way to make us comfortable in every way. The service was amazing, I believe best I have ever experienced.
And the views and food were out of this world. The service can be slow, but is generally attentive. The staff are very friendly. There can be a little bit of wind at the top of the hill, so maybe bring a cover-up just in case. The kabocha squash gnocchi are excellent, as is the cioppino, full of seafood! The desserts are excellent also. I mentioned on Opentable that it was the lastnight of my honeymoon on Maui and the staff exceeded my exceptions. They set a table right on the balcony for my wife and me that had a spectacular view of the west coast of Maui. The main course recommendations our server (Kyle) made were second to none. On location alone it is the best. The ambiance and service are second to none and, with the exception of Mama's and the Lahaina Grill, the food easily surpasses all the others. We did our usual sharing of appetizers, mains and dessert - the kitchen had no trouble in splitting the servings and sending them out individually. Our server was charming and knowledgeable, and engaging at appropriate times. The wine list, while at a pretty high mark-up (like the rest of Maui), was very good. The table was perfect to see the sunset, although a bit blinding while it was setting. The food was outstanding. Each course presented beautifully with a full depth of flavors. The service was excellent, although lagged at the end. Had to ask for a coffee refill and slow to follow up after we completed our meal. My mother's dessert had a candle on it and she felt special. Located in the charming Hotel Wailea, Capische offers an outstanding sunset view and a great restaurant environment. The food was spectacular. As reviews I read before dining there indicated, standouts were on the appetizer menu, specifically Mushroom Truffle Risotto and Lavender Pumpkin Gnocchi. Desserts - including the brioche doughnuts, creme brulee sampler and the chocolate salted caramel tart - were amazing. The food was outstanding, atmosphere excellent, service terrific (especially like the person who delivers the food explaining the details of how it was prepared as it was being delivered). But it is hard to see how the pricing of the salad and appetizer portion of the menu was created. But - if you are willing to look past the price - the food is awesome.
