A word from Capannina
Everything about Capannina is soft and subtle. The decor - celadon green upper walls, ambra marble below, handmade glass lamps, hanging mirror panels and faux columns that glow from the lights behind them - is simple yet striking. The marble, the lamps, and many of the ingredients used in the excellent dishes are all imported from Italy and the subtle softness of the interior extends to the food: eclectic Italian with an emphasis on Southern Italian tradition while still maintaining well-orchestrated choices from all over Italy. With pasta made in-house and delightfully fresh buffalo mozzarella coming from Italy, Capannina offers the essence of subtlety in the artistic presentation of its menu, along with an atmosphere that conveys the slightest California touch. PLEASE NOTE: We serve a prefix menu, consisting of a three-course dinner for $25 per person every day from 5pm to 6pm. Thereafter, we serve a regular menu. Black and white truffles imported from Itali & a seasonal menu.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "They had me at the bread. Served with an oil and vinegar bread topping to die for. Four of us ladies shared 2 appetizers, 2 pastas and 4 main courses. The homemade tortilloni in wine reduction were absolutely delicious. As was the seafood grill and Veal. The sauces were perfect - just enough but not overpowering or drowning the food. Better than my last trip to Rome. Service was excellent. Enjoyed the wine and the bustling atmosphere."

  • "Friendly, neighborhood feel. Excellent food, best ever carpaccio appetizer. Come before 6 PM for the $25 prix fixe dinner, a fantastic bargain unequalled anywhere. Service timely, efficient, and professional."

  • "Very enjoyable dinner with family - got there just before 6pm. Three people had the prix fix meal - starter, main, and dessert for $25. Two of us ordered from the menu. All good and good size portions - professional service without extra bother. The restaurant was fully packed by the time we finished."

  • "We always visit Capannina when in town for its neighborhood feel, friendly service, and outstanding Italian food. We went mid-week on the late side and it was slow night and they were winding down. But that did not stop them from making us feel special, relaxed and welcome, and they accommodated some special requests and served a beautifully cooked meal. We closed down the restaurant and never felt rushed or unwelcome. So kudos on another great night at Capannina and thanks for doing it right every time!"

  • "Restaurant very quiet but may be because we went so early on a rainy night. We had the early price-fixed menu choice. The corn-based with crab soup was fabulous. The Fungi Pasta choice was very flavorful but I think pasta was a little over cooked. Great place though and I would definitely return."

  • "Found this place on a list of top 10 Italian restaurants in SF. It deserves to be in the top 10 for sure, and for the price you pay, absolutely #1. Food was better than all the overpriced SF restaurants. Loved the veal and salmon, tiramisu was great. Friendly staff. Had a great experience. Will definitely become a regular here."

  • "My wife and I celebrated moving into Cow Hollow by walking to Capannina for dinner on the day of our move. It was a perfect way to start our new adventure. We will be back!"

  • "Price fix menu was awesome value! They let one of us substitute soup of the day for salad, and I just added it to my great meal! All portions were served hot and with early dining the service was outstanding! Brought home extra desert and wild Boar ragu, my chicken came with two sides. I hate when restaurants's a la cart you for everything! Finished the evening with espresso and coffee after 10 meals in our new SF apartment this was as good as any and by far the best value!"

  • "We went to Capannina to celebrate my daughter's birthday. The food and atmosphere was very good and our server was most attentive. He even picked up that it was her birthday from our discussion and presented her dessert with a candle and a "happy birthday"."

  • "We celebrated my wife's birthday with friends last Friday night. Two bottles of a fantastic Petit Syrah along with a starter of Oysters and four fantastic entrees. Great service and we had the best seat in the house (window table). I've eaten at Capannina in the past and this one more than lived up to our expectations."

  • "We went to this restaurant because it was recommended to us by two locals and we took two of our best friends here. We started with kale and pear salad and it was short on pears with hardly any dressing. It didn't have any flavor. The 3 of us had the swordfish and it was very dry and over cooked . None of us could finish it. My husband had the Sands Dabs. They were not crispy enough on the outside and he didn't like them served on canned fruit. The best part of the meal was the wine. And also we found we we were lucky to find a place to park right in front on Union St.!"

  • "Really nice and helpful staff. The clam linguine was way too salty by the end, but the rest of the food was excellent and the staff was very accommodating."

  • "My farewell dinner in SF and it seems as if I truly did save the best for last. Everything was wonderful...the service, food, and the general vibe of the place. The presentation of the food was appealing and the flavors...my mouth is watering just remembering all we ate. We shared everything, so I sampled them all. The squid's sink risotto with scallops was delicious! The penne arrabiatta was seasoned to perfection! Just the right amount of kick. Linguini with white clam sauce better than at most and...I have to stop because I'm back east and knowing I can't eat there stein till I return is breaking my heart."

  • "The food at Capannina was delicious. Extensive wine list. The neighborhood is trendy, fun. The decor is charming. What I'd change- seating is very crowded; noise level makes it difficult to have a conversation w/o raising your voice, uncomfortable because the people seated at the table next to you are so close, you know they can hear everything you're saying. My dinner was lukewarm, a big thumbs down for me, as I want my food to be piping hot. My husbands dinner, on the other hand, was scalding hot. Service- polite, but frenetic, rushed. I would give Capannina one more try in case this visit was an anomaly. After that, I'll spend my money somewhere else....too many good restaurants in SF to accept a less than memorable experience."

  • "We went to Campaninna at the advice of local friends and were so glad we did. We were transported to the isle of Capri the moment we sat down and were warmly greeted by the owner Mikele. The house made Mozzarella de Bufala with prociiutto, roasted red peppers and arugula along with a half dozen fresh oysters started our meal perfectly. The Mozzarella had the texture of room temp. butter and the perfect flavor of sweet & tangy cream. The house made orechhiette with Italian Sausage and broccoli rabe was superb and the Scallopine a la limone served with buttery fried spinach and parmesan risotto was equally so. The service throughout the sensational meal was courteous, prompt, professional. We went twice during our 1 week stay in town! GO!"

  • "This was a return visit to Capannina and I enjoyed it just as much as the first time. Food is great and love the Profiteroles for dessert!! What stands out here for me is the service...always impeccable but in a warm and friendly manner. Love the small, neighborhood feel of this restaurant and enjoyed our meal very much."

  • "The food was good, but not great. We felt at this price point that we should be delighted with the dishes, but they felt fairly average for an Italian restaurant in SF. The service was outstanding, however. The restaurant appearance is unremarkable, and forgettable."

  • "We had a lovely dinner at Capannina. Because it is so hard to park around Union Street, we hadn't been to Capannina in almost two years, but now we wonder how we could have stayed away so long. The food is fabulous. We tried the Caesar salad with crab and the lobster salad with mozzarella and prosciutto for appetizers and both were excellent. For entrees we had the swordfish and the salmon and loved them both. I am not a big fan of cauliflower, but the cauliflower puree with the salmon was delicious. Great service too."

  • "The absolute best EARLY BIRD SPECIAL in the City. (between 5-6) The Caesar with Dungeness Crab, the CHICKEN UNDER A BRICK and dessert is run of the menu for $29. can not be beat ANYWHERE. Would pay full price for all, but am getting older now and don't mind the earlier time for the fantastic value in dining. Would order EVERY item and pay full price if I am there later."

  • "We had a 5:15 reservation and it pays to make one, as the placed was packed within 20 minutes. We had the set menu-white asparagus soup was excellent (as was the poached oyster which was exactly as advertised), grilled salmon that was cooked perfectly, and tiramisu that was moist and not overpowering. We also had the mozzarella bufala with prosciutto and arugula which was fresh and creamy, along with the braised short rib tortellini which were just soft pillows of goodness. Why haven't we heard of this place before?"

  • "Awesome food and service. Definately the top 3 italian restaurants that i've dined in. Food was amazing and the wine pairing was very very commendable. The staff were so accomodating to do a special for my 4 year old! Will definately visit when i'm next in San Francisco."

  • "i took a friend and another there for her birthday celebration. she had heard great things. we were so so disappointed with everything. first the service- my friend had to wave the waiter down at the beginning after i was offered hot tea and she was ignored. all the staff just flew thru and threw stuff on the table- ie. the oil for bread does not belong in front of the person where the main plate goes-it belongs in the center of the table where the bread was. the waiter was so overly effected with his Italian accent we thought it was fake. he must of said Prego 25 times during the course of the service.the tables were too close to one another and i got bumped 12 times by staff and other customers. never going back. also,"

  • "I have been to Capannina twice now, and both times the food was fabulous; the ambiance perfect and the service excellent! The first time we dined there, we had an intimate group of four and food, service and ambiance were perfect. This time, we had a group of seven and every meal was hot and delicious. We were served our meals at the same time. The service was outstanding and the ambiance perfect! I don't have a bad thing to say. We are not familiar with the Italian wines, but our waiter was knowledgeable and very helpful in suggesting wines we would enjoy! Every selection met our needs exactly! OH, and the desserts..... DELICIOUSO!!! Capannina, a definiteYES!"

  • "The Italian waiters provide excellent service, from decanting the wine we brought to keeping our water glasses full to removing plates after we were finished eating (without making us feel either rushed to eat or ignored) despite a busy evening. The special truffle menu provided a wonderful boost to beef carpaccio and a papperdelle dish we shared. Tuna was perfectly seared and the brick chicken was very tasty. We also enjoyed the delicious limoncello made in-house and the coffee service (even the decaf coffee tasted full bodied). All in all, a lovely evening at a gracious but not expensive restaurant."
