A word from Canyon Kitchen
Sometimes the magic of sharing a table with friends over fabulous food and wonderful wine can be elevated by a place. Sitting at the foot of an unspoiled box canyon in the Sapphire Valley, Canyon Kitchen has that impact. Chef John Fleer, a three time James Beard nominee for Best Chef Southeast, strikes an informal, nostalgic and often playful chord through the history of Southern Appalachia and the broader South. Local produce and organic selections from our own community gardens and the surrounding area are at the foundation of the food. The fixed price menu is enhanced by a list of wines produced using only sustainably raised grapes.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "My wife and I had a great dinner as well as a wonderful experience on Wednesday evening. The views were spectacular and the building was beautiful. The service was intentive and and the food was delivered in a timely maner."

  • "Our waiter, Jason, was not professional, and just about ruined the experience for our group. His response to anything was "no problem"/got involved in our conversation/took off when time to pick up our payment/did not return to give change. Don't like the fact that 18% auto gratuity included for a party of 4."

  • "The entire evening was wonderful. The wait staff was attentive, friendly and knowledgeable. We will return for a special occasion!"

  • "The setting of the Canyon Kitchen is gorgeous. Our snacks that were served first, were all delicious! We had the choice of pork tenderloin or trout for dinner. Two of us chose trout and the other two chose the pork. The trout was fabulous...the guys said the pork was very flavorful but a bit tough. That would be the only negative about our visit. Our waitress, Mary, was awesome... Very friendly and helpful throughout the meal. Desserts were great and after dinner we ventured outside to the outdoor fireplace where we sipped a glass of wine and enjoyed gazing into the clear night sky at the stars! Perfect ending to a beautiful night!"

  • "Each time I eat here, I am in awe of the beauty of the valley surrounded by mountains. The fixed menu does lend itself to surprises, but at least 2 of the 4 courses are always fabulous. The setting is magnificent. The service is relaxed, helpful, laced with southern manners. Will come again and again."

  • "I've never had a negative experience at Canyon Kitchen. Elegant and purposeful presentation of local ingredients that keep you wanting more. I can't say enough about the warm and friendly staff and of course Lonesome Valley itself. You feel like you've walked into your own private Yosemite. Just sit back and wait for someone to serve you the perfect glass of wine."

  • "The setting is without equal. One dines in room that is open on all sides to a magnificent box canyon. The views are breathtaking. The service is outstanding. The food is among the best I have eaten and it has been my good fortune to dine at great restaurants all around the world. This is my favorite restaurant in all the world"

  • "We had the most outstanding experience at Canyon Kitchen this past weekend. We were celebrating both our son's engagements with family and friends. The ambience was so spectacular, staff was very accommodating and delightful. We requested to meet Chef John Fleer and he visited our table and signed two of the menus for our brides-to-be. The food presentation and taste was first class!! What a wonderful memory we made with our family and pictures taken were absolutely beautiful with Lonesome Valley backdrop!"

  • "Breathtaking view and delicious food! The service was impecable and wine list perfect!"

  • "On past visits the food was better. It was good, not great for the price."

  • "Starters and the desserts as well as the wine paired with the food were excellent. However the Amberjack that we ordered left a lot to be desired. It would appear that a prepared baked/grilled chicken, pork chop or trout would fare much better than the Amberjack. The hostess went above and beyond to make sure we had a pleasant visit. The waitress as well as the bar staff were react as well."

  • "As always the Canyon Kitchen does not disappoint. This is its busy season, but always the service is great and the food outstanding. We try to get in every time that we are in our Sapphire, NC home. Reservations are a must, but well worth planning ahead."

  • "Food selection for Thursday was poor. Only 2 entree choices, skirt steak and amberjack. This does not strike us as worth the cost of the meal. Appetizers were fair... I would not recommend this restaurant for this Thursday limited menu."
    Dined on 6/26/2014
  • "It is comforting to know how you will be spending since it is a prefix menu plus fixed 18 percent gratuities. Wine is expensive but superb choices and suggest paying their corkage to bring you own wines. The ambiance is superb and a walk through their veggie and herb garden is quite an experience. Highly recommended for special occasions."

  • "Our favorite place in the area! The bread continues to be amazing and the menu creative!! Portion size well done. Some offerings are more complex than necessary, but always interesting."
    Dined on 6/25/2014
  • "Off night. All of the starters were excellent, especially the sausage and dumpling- but why not give us enough for everyone to have one? Amberjack was seriously overcooked, and one of the steaks was too- inconsistency is a challenge. But this is worth a trip and the food always merits praise for originality and freshness."

  • "We went with another couple and had a very relaxing time and wonderful food. Although at 6:30 on a Friday night we were never rushed. The food was very creative and the wait staff - all of them- could not have been more accommodating or better trained. The description of the specials was informative without being over the top with unimportant details. The open air location is nothing short of heavenly."

  • "Took two guests to Canyon Kitchen last week, and they loved everything about it - setting with beautiful view, delicious and interesting food, attentive service!! It was a special evening for them and for me. I will continue to take visitors there this summer."

  • "We love the beautiful scenery and the outdoor bar. Our cocktails were divine! We thoroughly enjoyed the appetizer tasting selections. Our skatewing entree was a generous portion and perfectly cooked. Staff is friendly and attentive."

  • "View is 5 Stars and you can see them. Open air in a barn (new) the menu is price fixe, but wonderful. Two or three entrees per night, four or five sampling snacks are almost a meal locally grown or made. This summer restaurant in the mountains of western North Carolina looks out at 1000 foot granite faces and is a treat for all your senses."

  • "A gem in the mountains. We were so overwhelmed with the service , location and food . "

  • "Metaphorically, of course, but views of the sheer rock cliffs of Lonesome Valley, the trees clinging to the rock cliffs, and the verdant growth of multiple types of trees and shrubs is the setting in which we sat for a wonderful, delicious dinner. The menu is price fix. First, we started with a selection of 4 appetizers that were exquisite and a demonstration of the imagination and pure skill of the chef. My wife enjoyed a fabulous chicken dish with favors, texture, and moisture that wouldn't stop (the favors, that is!). My dish was skate wing...exquisite, delicate and flavorful. The desserts were beyond description, but we still left a few bites as we can't handle sugar, regardless of how good the dish might be. Great meal!"

  • "Having dinner in a box canyon surrounded by beautiful grounds would be great enough, but the food is something special. Beautifully presented, innovative and delicious. "

  • "Canyon kitchen is a spectacular setting, excellent service, I was a guest of three friends, so I was not a part of the bill. The hosts felt the bill was incorrect. It was adjusted , I know that. I do know they applied an 18 % gratituity! The gratuity was earned, .but hosts do not have an option to reward the service. Portions were small. (8:30 seating??) One complaint was the talapia fish was tough.... vinegary?. Not good,..... not worthy to be served at CK. The batter on he soft shell crab was greasy, too heavy. They took the fish off the bill. CK was cooperative and responsive to the problem. The bison was delicious! The problem is you expect the ***** 5star offerings at CK. I look forward to giving it another chance."

  • "This is a beautiful location for a restaurant. The food was a complete disappointment. The salad were tasteless, the main dishes were over cooked and the desserts were not worth the calories. I have enjoyed eating here before but this was so disappointing I will not go back. Definitely not worth the price!"

  • "This was our third visit to Canyon Kitchen. Each time we marvel at the incredible food and service. The menu is unquestionably fit for foodies. The atmosphere is "mountain casual" and the open-air feel of the high ceilings and large open barn doors brings the beautiful outdoors in. The staff is warm and friendly but also very knowledgeable. Our waiter gave us a practical dissertation on pannacotta during this visit, explaining how it is made and why the chef chose to make a savory version for our appetizer course. Wine list has a little of everything and many bottles are reasonably priced. We thoroughly enjoyed the entire meal and our friends (who had never been to the area) were overwhelmed."

  • "It is hard to imagine a more strikingly beautiful setting than Lonesome Valley. The facility complements the setting. The food is interesting and excellent. Really, one of the most enjoyable food experiences ever."

  • "Certainly the best dining experience in our area if not the entire eastern portion of the Nation. The views surrounding the facility are world class. The building itself, open to the views on three sides has a way of blending into the background. The food is with out a doubt exceptional; Fresh, Flavorful, much of it Local and without question BRILLIANT! Chef Fleer has an artistic flair that few in this world can match. All of the staff were knowledgeable, professional and exceptionally well trained. Simply a wonderful evening! "
