A word from Canyon Kitchen
Sometimes the magic of sharing a table with friends over fabulous food and wonderful wine can be elevated by a place. Sitting at the foot of an unspoiled box canyon in the Sapphire Valley, Canyon Kitchen has that impact. Chef John Fleer, a three time James Beard nominee for Best Chef Southeast, strikes an informal, nostalgic and often playful chord through the history of Southern Appalachia and the broader South. Local produce and organic selections from our own community gardens and the surrounding area are at the foundation of the food. The fixed price menu is enhanced by a list of wines produced using only sustainably raised grapes.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "The restaurant is in a scenic mountain valley. We started with cocktails looking at the chef's garden and taking in the mountain views. It feels very casual but the dining experience is like something you get in a more formal 5 star restaurant. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable about the menu and top selections. I have been on a romantic dinner for two and most recently a group of 10 friends. The staff makes whatever occasion feel special. The family style "snacks" appetizer sets the stage for an amazing dinner. The chef always has interesting combinations and rarely the same thing on the menu. The taste is out of this world. This is the best restaurant experience in the area."

  • "Canyon kitchen is a must see and a wonderful place to have dinner. Reservations are essential. The views are absolutely beyond belief. Dining in the spring and summer all of the doors are open so one feels as though you are dining outside while actually being inside. Dining in the winter gives you the warmth of a roaring fire. I highly recommend that you try Canyon Kitchen. This trip was our third one there!"

  • "We had a wonderful dinner with another couple last Saturday night. It was our first visit to this beautiful restaraunt which is located in a beautiful setting. Our meal, wine and service were all wonderful. We loved that the appetizers were all served family style so that we could all easily share. We even stopped to enjoy our wine for a bit during dinner and sat by the beautiful fire in the large fireplace. It was a special evening with special friends and a special meal. We look forward to going back."

  • "we have dined at canyon kitchen twice in the past month and both times found the entire experience to be excellent. we recommend telling your waiter to allow time between courses and take a break to sit in front of the fire or stroll the garden and chat for a bit."

  • "The overall experience was most enjoyable! Only negative aspect to note was the temp inside the venue - was rather cool and at some points too cool for comfort. The server was most was most attentive and offered hot tea to help with the needed warmth. Other than the temp issue it was a pleasant experience! Btw: hats off to the pastry chef as the desserts were inventive and a very welcomed sweet/tasty closure to the great evening. Also, our server was one of the friendliest I've experienced - in addition, he was very knowledgeable about the menu and it's prep!"

  • "Fine dining in Cashiers, NC. Don't miss this one if you are in the area. The view in the valley of the mountains is wonderful so get there before sunset. You can walk and enjoy a cocktail or glass of wine before dinner. Everyday they serve fresh food so menu changes. Gourmet in the mountains."

  • "Food and service was EXCELLENT at Canyon Kitchen. Certainly hope I am able to go back in the near future. There was an EXTREMELY loud group right beside us and the manager was nice enough to move us across the restaurant so we could enjoy the group we were with."

  • "We enjoyed a dinner for 5, but felt the food was not as interesting as on prior visits. Too many competing tastes in some dishes became over powering, then others were just uninteresting....like the chicken. Desserts were also a mixed bag of flavors, so didn't quite work. Reservation was handled well and service was good. There is lots of competition in the Cashiers area now, so they need to be on top of their game for the prices they charge and we all felt they weren't there. However, we had a nice evening together and you can't do wrong with their location and the rock face views."

  • "Was so looking forward to going to Canyon Kitchen. Beautiful location and we are a big fan of the chef from his Blackberry Farm days. While, location and service was good, the food was pretty awful....from the salad to the Osso Bucco. When we told several friends who have houses in the area about our experience, they said they were not surprised. I hope Chef Fleer isn't overextending himself with his recent expansion into Asheville. ...he is very talented and my guess is the kitchen staff doesn't hold up when he's not around ."

  • "I can't state emphatically enough that this restaurant is a real find. It's nestled in the most gorgeous setting imaginable--prettier than anywhere I have dined in the US or Europe. The staff is welcoming and unpretentious. The food is outstanding but not fussy. The tiny outdoor bar offers imaginative and skillfully-crafted cocktails that one may enjoy by a fireplace. The food was fresh, seasonal, and full of flavor without being heavy. If you are staying anywhere near western NC, you owe it to yourself to arrange a trip to the Canyon Kitchen."

  • "Everything was great about this restaurant with one exception. While we were enjoying a drink in front of the fire our waitress gave us little choice but to go to our table exactly at the time of our reservations notwithstanding my request that we be allowed to finish our drinks at the fireplace. What happened to the notion that the customer is always right ? This inexcusable lack of flexibility detracted from what otherwise was a wonderful dining experience. I will go back but hope I will not encounter this attitude again."

  • "Canyon Kitchen is a spectacularly good restaurant in a beautiful building but the scenery overshadows all the rest. Lonesome Valley is one of the most strikingly beautiful places in the Smokey Mountains."

  • "I've dined at the Canyon Kitchen three times. Each time was unique as the menu constantly changes based on the locally grown and available food. While the menu doesn't offer much of a selection (usually up to three entree and dessert selections with appetizers, soup and salad fixed), the food is impeccably prepared. The setting of the restaurant is second to none with summer dining in the fresh mountain air with the views of a sheer rock mountain face and manicured grounds and fall dining next to a huge stone fireplace. Their freshly made cocktails are fabulous and one-of-kind. Canyon Kitchen was able to prepare a meal around my 11 year old son's significant food allergies with no problems."

  • "This was our second visit to the area and our second visit to Canyon Kitchen, as well. I can't imagine visiting Cashiers and NOT going to the restaurant. Once again, a great dining experience. One of my favorite restaurants of all time!"

  • "Our Canyon Kitchen experience was wonderful. Make sure to arrive early enough to have a drink at the bar and enjoy the mountain view. The staff was very knowledgeable of the menu and I was even given their recipe for the roasted brussels sprouts. Yum. If I return to Cashiers, I will visit them again."

  • "Four of us ate at Canyon Kitchen on 7-14-13. We had a fantastic meal with great service. It was a Sunday night , so the prix fixe was $48, and it was a bargain. 4 different apps brought to the table served family style just to get started. Two of us had swordfish and the other two had the chicken for entrees. Not a morsel was left. Fantastic desserts. The cheerwine float I had as part of my dessert brought back memories of my youth, having floats on a warm summer night. Wonderful ambiance with the fireplace roaring and views of the mountains. Sorry for staying so late on a Sunday, but we didn't want to leave. Cheers Canyon Kitchen."
