Diner Reviews
  • "Most of my visits are for lunch which is very good. I'd give them an excellent if they'd get their yummy Turkey Pot Pie back again. The surroundings are great since it is an old, historic tavern. What made our lunch most enjoyable was our waitress Jerron. She made the meal very enjoyable. Will ask for her next time we go. "

  • "Such a nice place. We were so delighted our first visit everything was wonderful. We had this amassing Pork Chop which was not on the menu this time. Our meal was only satisfactory it was the veal parm, over cooked and tough. I must say your staff are so pleasant from the bartender to the waiters. We are Chesapeake City People and are accustomed to good staff and believe that is what you have thank you for the experience"

  • "menu did not offer much variety...last time we went it was more period related..now it's overpriced and not great"

  • "Cantwell's is a great restaurant, with excellent food, lots of beverage choices and attentive waitstaff. We have eaten there several times. The bar is very nostalgic, and offers some really good happy hour specials. Cantwell's flatbread pizzas are so good, you'll want to eat them for a main course. We usually get one for an appetizer if we are eating a full dinner. There is ample free parking on Main Street within a short walk to the restaurant. Odessa is worth a stroll on its own, too."

  • "Enjoyed the historic tavern. Friendly staff and service. Six of us all ordered different items and all were thoroughly enjoyed. Prices were reflected in quality of food."

  • "I had dinner with 3 girlfriends that I had not seen in a while. We were there for 3 hours and no one rushed us. It was a very pleasant evening."

  • "I have been to Cantwells numerous times for lunch over the past few years but my sister and I were both disappointed this time. It was as if there had been a change of chef. The menu was different and the food was definitely not up to its usual standard. The shrimp BLT special was over powering with the pesto on it. The shrimp was nice and plump but the toast was over cooked and it just was not tasty. We did enjoy the chicken salad- nice chunks of chicken with a hint of sweetness. The salads were also a disappointment - the apple and the chopped (it was the better of the two.) My grandson had a child's pizza and the sauce was a little tart. We have always left pleased but not this time. Was there a change in chef- would love to know!"

  • "Although the food and service are always great, what keeps me coming back is the innovative menu. For a neighborhood restaurant in a small town, the chef keeps it fresh. With touches like homemade pickles, peanut butter and bacon available, what's not to like?"

  • "Food was very good, service was good, noise level was unpleasant- in large room upstairs..."

  • "I love the history of the building-when looking at the drink menu I knew this was the place - they had my favorite bee on tap. The food was fresh and purchased from local business. The service was on point and we didn't have to wait for anything a great place for anytime of the day."

  • "This was a cute place to grab a bit to eat and have some drinks. The staff was really friendly and open to suggest things. I would go back again."

  • "We booked a table knowing that we had a lot of catching up to do over a nice meal. The food, service and atmosphere were perfect. We had the crab dip, crab cake, farmhouse burger, and special chocolate dessert. All of it was delicious and recommended. I also like the fact that we never felt rushed to get up from the taxable. Will go again."

  • "the food was great. they do have a new menu . the new menu was not as likeable to me as the old one. But still good food. Previously EVERYTHING was homemade and now the barbeque sauce that was homemeade is now sweet baby rays. The mac and cheese is OUT OF THIS WORLD!!!!"

  • "This was my second time at Cantwell's Tavern. The historic building is great and gives a different feel to the restaurant than most other restaurants. The food is very good. We had a couple honest mistakes no onions on 1 of the burgers, ordered salad got home fries. The beer list is solid especially for the area. I would make a few changes but if you like craft beer this is a good spot without having to drive too far."

  • "My wife and I have come to love this little gem in the town of Odessa, Delaware. This last time we went was for our 18th Wedding Anniversary. I had the Swordfish special and my wife had the New York strip.. Both were excellent, beer was great and so was the bread pudding dessert.. Our waiter was polite and knowledgeable about the menu.. Offered up some very good suggestions. Prices where very reasonable for the quality of food being served.. It was a bit busy, a little noisy but was a good dinner and was still able to be romantic.. We highly recommend Cantwell's Tavern.."

  • "Great service. Small menu which iis fine and allows them to focus on quality. Large group came in and they had little regard for other guests. Loud Not the taverns fault just poor social skills"

  • ""I love the feel of this place - it is very intimate, great for date night or a group event (done both). Definitely a spot we return to - food is fresh. Their crab cakes, which I have all the time are amazing. Everyone loved their meal. Service was well-timed and we haven't had an un-friendly wait person yet.""

  • "This is dining in an authentic early American tavern. We like the ambience along with the friendly and attentive service. The food is very, very good whether you opt for fine dining or whether you choose one of their delicious burgers. Can't well' sis located in the beautiful historic section of Odessa. Highly recommended."

  • "This was our first time dining at Cantwell's and it won't be our last. The restaurant is beautiful -- romantic, intimate dining rooms with fireplaces and lovely decor. Our server was wonderful. She provided very good service and great recommendations for cocktails, entrees, etc. And the food was wonderful. Perfectly cooked and large portions. We can't wait to eat outside in the Spring."

  • "Really enjoyed eating here. The environment was incredible and welcoming and I really enjoyed how it is set up in an old building. It was a cozy place to enjoy a good meal. The food was outstanding. It was a little pricey but it was valentine's day so I didn't mind."

  • "While at Christmas in Odessa, we tried unsuccessfully twice to get a table or seat at the bar but it was so crowded we could not. Based on that and from other we spoke with, we were looking forward to our evening and meal at the tavern. We were very disappointed. Cheese and bread plate with homemade jam and peanut butter was excellent but after that we cannot offer much. The Caesar salad had too much yellow romaine and the dressing was bland. Crab cakes were so so and the Chicken and Biscuits was not that good - liquid was too watery and contained too many peas. Biscuit tasted like it was pre-made and frozen from a package and not homemade. Coming from North Wilmington we would stop at Jessup's Tavern before driving to Odessa."

  • "The venue is nice, the food is good but not notable. They need to find a good bread vendor. Do not like wine served in carafes per glass. The service is not comparable for the cost of the meal. No attention to detail, empty water glasses no refills offered, no checking back to see if we needed anything, left so much to be desired for a 200.00 meal for four."

  • "We decided to try Cantwell's for Sunday brunch. We have dined there for Dinner. ( Great dinner!) We wanted to try their Brunch.OMG ! I ordered the roast beef omelet, I didn't want to finish, it was that good. The Wife and Daughter had the big breakfast (BE hungry if you order it. Huge.) The smoked bacon and sausage links are to die for. Brunch is pricy, but, well worth every penny. You can make reservations online, this is very convenient I've used it several times, works great. Cantwell's Tavern is 5 stars in my book."

  • "My friends and I have been meaning to try the Cantwell for a while now. We were able to go for a birthday celebration and we were all pleased with the food, service and the warm toasty fireplace room on a cold Friday night. There were several children dining with parents and they were all enjoying the evening and all behaved beautifully. I had the salmon and can say it was the best I have eaten in a long time. I plan to enjoy the Cantwell again soon. Thank you for a nice evening."
