A word from Cantinetta Luca
The menu offers casual dining, featuring items such as delicious pizza, baked in an authentic, Italian, no gas, wood-burning pizza oven. Luca also specializes in antipasti, a dozen or so varieties of salumis and handmade pasta. Whole fish and roasted meats are served family style. All of the presentations are simple and rustic; food prepared with fresh seasonal ingredients to bring out bold flavors. The executive chef is Jason Balestrieri who worked under Joachim Splichal at Patina, the famed Los Angeles restaurant. The interior decor of Cantinetta Luca is antique/modern, inspired by the old refurbished buildings of Italy. The design is a blend of stone, brick and glass, chiseled wood and bright Italian colors. The decor features a barrel vaulted ceiling, brick and chiseled beams contrasted by superb contemporary furnishings and modern lighting all set off by rich colors and textures. Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "The waiters/waitresses were all great, especially with our 17 month old son, including the multiple times he dropped something on the floor and they were quicker than me or my wife to retrieve it. Food? Delicious. The descriptions, especially of the pizzas, did not do the food justice. Honestly, they need a new name for their pizza creations."

  • "We always enjoy this place when we come to the Peninsula. It is charming, fun, and the staff knowledgeable and eager to please. Food is always extraordinary with wide variety, but not an overwhelming menu. You will not be disappointed! "

  • "We come here every time we're in Carmel. Love everything on the menu and the service could not be more accommodating. "

  • "This was our second time eating here, The first time we were a group of 6 and were seated in the back. This time we were only two and were wedged between two other tables near the front door.. Both times the food and service were awesome but it was very noisy. It is definitely a neighborhood hot spot so if you want a quiet experience, I would try lunch or the earliest dinner reservation offered."

  • "We sat at the bar for dinner during a weekday. Service was awesome. Our food was very tasty. Wine paired well with each course. We will definitely be coming back!"

  • "Good food. Out table wasn't ready so we took one by the bar. The bartender was our server. It is therefore difficult to evaluate the restaurant accurately."

  • "We discovered Cantinetta Lucca through Groupon and it is now part of our regular restaurant rotation. The menu is very interesting and creative. Service impeccable. Some tables a bit noisy."

  • "A very pleasant, intimate informal dining spot with excellent Italian food and wood fired pizzas, plus a high quality wine list. Service is attentive, prices are fairly high but the quality of the food is greater than its cost."

  • "Overpriced but good quality food. Porterhouse steak had great flavor and was big enough for 3 adults. Salad was good too. We asked for a potato side dish and it did not come till we reminded wait staff about it. Also, staff forgot our dessert order so service was a little slow."

  • "Food was good overall. Loved the crispy breadsticks too. I ordered papparadelle with rabbit and forest veggies. Very tasty but no rabbit! Had to ask the kitchen half way through eating the pasta- where's the rabbit. They brought out a bowl of rabbit for me to dump on my remaining noodles."

  • "We ate at this restaurant a couple of years ago and it was very good. I was very disappointed with the food, and the service was very poor from the horrible seating after making a reservation to the poordinning service.I would not return to this restaurant."

  • "I absolutely loved this restaurant. As an experienced foodie I thought this was one of the best dinners I've ever had. The bread and olive dipping oil was out of this world! Will definitely be going back."

  • "I ate pizza, and it isnt good. Just this. Lucca is a Italian Restaurant, and only ofer italian wine. My choice is an expensive and poor wine."

  • "Tables are much too close to each other. There is no room to have a conversation without "including" the people on either side of you. Very good food"

  • "Dined here on Saturday evening with two friends. We tried a whole variety of items from the menu, and were pleasantly surprised at the excellent quality...The pasta dishes were well done extremely well. as well as our entrees, seafood, and short ribs. The service was attentive but not intrusive....the noise level was awful!!. But we still enjoyed a fine evening and people watching!"

  • "Cantinetta Luca's has a very interesting menu and we always enjoy going there when in Carmel. The Ravioli appetizer was absolutely wonderful, egg and truffles, yummy. The salad bowl was huge but light and really made for a great start to the dinner. We definitely go again."

  • "This service was so bad that we were unable to enjoy the food (which was good), once the server remember to put in our order. No apologies, nothing! It was like we were invisible, The tables next to us ordered, ate, paid before we received our meal and we were seated and ordered before they they were both seated. Same server."

  • "Fabulous Italian food, great atmosphere and service. Highly recommend when in Carmel...ask for a window table. The bar tables are also fun!"

  • "The food is excellent! The service was ok--very busy place/loud/tables extremely close to each other (so no privacy). Asked for bread once we received our appetizer--never came. Asked again once we had our dinners--but by then it was a bit late. Overall--great place to eat with friends--not a romantic place for a date!"

  • "overall the experience was just ok. not at all what i was hoping for, especially at those prices. the wait stafff was strong but the biggest complaint were the portions. i read about this by others too. we both had the bolognese and the portions were barely enough to feed my 7 yr old. it was ridiculously miniscule. i was shocked when the dinners came. i left hungry and had to ask for bread at the end of the meal. i have never done that one time in my whole dining experience. i almost ordered another entree. very disappointing. i will say the food was really good however. i recommend that you do not come there very hungry."

  • "Wonderful start with four artisan salume, followed by the magnificent pumpkin ravioli and caserecce alla romana and ended with delicious chocolate torta and pear crostata. Great Italian dishes and wine. Definitely one of the best Monterey Peninsula Italian restaurants. Don't miss it."

  • "Had a dinner for 8 on Valentines day. As expected, the place was busy and the staff was nealy overwhelmed. Despite that, all of the pasta, pizza and appetizer dishes were excellent. The pasta wit clams (vongole) may be the best I've ever had. Service is what you'd expect for both a moderately noisy place AND Valentines Day, but certainly acceptable. Wine list was generous and broad, but we found an excellent Primitivo which complemented our many dishes without breaking the budget. Very nice, and we'd go back again!"

  • "We could not carry on a conversation because of the noise level. The service was poor. We waited almost half an hour to get our food. We explained that we had a concert to go to--but that didn't get things moving. The food was good. We've eaten at this restaurant several times. It may be a while before we go back. It was not a pleasant dining experience."

  • "This restaurant used to be amazing, but has seemed to slipped to average or below. The food is just okay, but the great service more than helps with that. The host is not too friendly (maybe having dealt with too many customers?). For a place we used to love, we might not be going back."

  • "Don't try to book a table, because they rarely honor reservations. We have tried three times and every time we end up setting in the VERY LOUD and Cramped bar area. Twice I have called and expressly asked to be seated in the rear dining room , and was assured that we would be, we ended up in the bar. The reason, table next to us said the same reason was given to them, the party at the table was eating slow. But everyone says, it is really because the staff saves the area for local friends of the owner and his hotel guests. This seems to be the case, staff was constantly attending these guests as "long lost friends" , ignoring the rest of the guests. THREE STRIKES your out and we are OUT and going over to BASIL for great food and service."

  • "We've been meaning to try this spot out for a while and finally did. We should have come sooner! The service was excellent, present but not overbearing. The food was well-presented and quite tasty from appetizer to dessert!"

  • "The menu is relatively limited unless you like sausage. the food was good, but overpriced. It is very loud. Service was ok. We waited for quit a while...long enough for the waiter and manager to apologize for the delay in the delivery of our entrees. Halfway through our meal three other couples were seat in the booth with us. Then the evening redeemed itself. They were all out of towners, not expecting the AT&T and we were happy to pass on some local tips. We lingered over coffee and dessert (that was worth the money) to enjoy the fun conversation. We will not be back. Many other places in Carmel and the Peninsula to drop $150."

  • "We come here every year for the AT&T Golf Tournament. We always book well ahead because we love to return to Luca. The food is always so delicious, prepared in the classic Italian way. We love the lively atmosphere and have always left delighted and satisfied. Our sons had the Bistecca this year and it was just perfectly cooked - they and we ate every bite. My husband loves the wood fired roasted chicken. The Bolognese - wonderful! Thank you Luca and we'll see you next year!"
