A word from Cantina Italiana
A tradition in Boston’s historic North End. We have been serving generations of families, locals and tourists in the North End since 1931. People crave the taste of our food. Some say their mouths water just thinking about eating here. That’s why when we change even the slightest thing, they let us know it. Some things should stay just as they are. Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Come here every year for my dinner before the marathon. Fly in from Chicago and look forward to my dinner as much as the marathon! Love your restaurant and tell everyone about it! Have recommended it to all my local Boston friends as well! Thank you!"

  • "Perhaps it was just the large group that was there but there were children playing their water glasses which got to be very annoying after fifteen minutes. Besides the noise level the food and service was outstanding. I would definitely recommend it and return. "

  • "I had the gnocchi. The rose sauce was okay, not wonderful, needed to have more cream and pancetta and mushrooms. It was overpriced for what it was, as is the wine. The spinach salad was good. The portions were good, but the taste of entrees not great."

  • "My date & I were in Boston this past Wednesday and decided to stay in town (we're from NH) for an early dinner. I chose this restaurant based on the strong reviews on Open Table. I ordered a pasta & sausage dish and my date had the eggplant. We took our waiters recommendation and tried the red wine blend which was very nice. The fresh Italian bread was served with a dish of plain olive oil - too plain for our tastes My meal was good, but nothing to rave about. My date's eggplant was good, but that was all she got. It my experience that a meal like her's would be served with a side of pasta or veggies. We opted to go to Mike's for cannoli's so can't rate the deserts. There are so many choices, I'll try somewhere else next time."

  • "Food was very good the service excellent. Started with Antipasto and then our main course. Very happy with the dining experience"

  • "Good food with the no frills pasta selection and no frills wait staff you would expect from a long-standing north end joint. good food and good drinks ( get the homemade pineapple-infused rum) would definitely go back. plus they had gluten free pasta!"

  • "Although we had a reservation, our group of four adults was jammed into a booth built for four small children. Our waiter, while very nice and cordial, was clearly overextended and forgot one of our appetizers. We also got the sense that we were being rushed as if there were another impending "seating". The North End of Boston is full of many excellent restaurants...this is not one of them."

  • "The food was terrific, as usual. Service by Omar was great. He knows the menu and the kitchen very well. The restaurant will modify any item or make something special, if you wish. Overall, a great place."

  • "My boyfriend and I enjoyed an amazing 2 course dinner here as part of Boston Restaurant week. Our server was personable and knowledgeable and the service was quick. The food was amazing and we got large portions. Definitely recommend this gem in the North End."

  • "With all the options available in the north end, this is a definite skip. The calamari was below average, and the chicken parm was dry. The sauce on the pasta side was watery and flavorless. The meal was so uninspiring we skipped dessert and headed to mikes."

  • "Two entrees, two salads, and 1 glass of winecwas over $100. The homemade house dressing was nothing special, and that pretty much sums up the review. House salad was a bunch of greens with 3 cherry tomatoes and three chunks of cucumber, a few pieces of red onion. I had the haddock over lobster pasta ravioli special. If there was any lobster in that ravioli it was the white stuff you find between the meat and the shell. The slightly creamy tomato sauce tasted like it came out of a can. Perfectly edible, but for $30 I expect more. Service was fine. No way I would go back, a chain restaurant like Unos would be much better."

  • "Cantina always provides you with a pleasurable experience. The food is tasty and the service is fantastic. I've been eating here for almost ten years and nothing has dropped off. They just redid their decor and menu design which show they are willing to invest in their business. Homemade pastas, wine list and seafoods are delicious. Service is excellent no matter who you get (although I do have my favorites). I also enjoy the space while eating. Most North End eateries are tight and crowded while Cantina offers booths and tables to accommodate groups. No rubbing elbow all night while eating is quit enjoyable. I'd drive in five nights a week if time allowed. Try it, you will have an enjoyable night."

  • "We had a reservation for 7pm and found ourselves available for dinner at 6pm so we called and they were able to accommodate an earlier table. We headed over from the Seaport area with what we thought was plenty of time to find parking. No parking available in the large lots we usually use. It took forever to find another small lot and walk to the restaurant. We arrived 20 min late but they held the table for us. I was surprised and very pleased. They wouldn't have been able to do that after 7pm I am sure because their lobby was packed when we were leaving. We were able to relax and enjoy our meal. Great night."

  • "Took my girlfriend here for a week-late Valentines Day dinner. Service, food, staff were all excellent. Would definitely return. Don't know if unusual, but seemed like date night type place on OpenTable, but there were at least 4 or 5 families with young children there. (crayons, toys, the works) Didn't bother us, and may have been coincidence."

  • "We had a lovely Sunday lunch at Cantina Italiana. It combines old world North End atmosphere with wonderful freshly prepared dishes. All of the expected menu items are there plus lots of updated ones. We had a group of 6 and were able to enjoy conversation at a bright round table near the window. Our waiter was professional and prompt. Each dish was wonderfully prepared."

  • "This is the perfect place for a couple for Valentine's Day! The staff are incredibly attentive, while allowing for conversation and alone time. The food is classic Italian, perfectly flavored, and enough variety to satisfy anyone but the most exotic foodies. Wine list has good variety and is reasonably priced. We had the lobster ravioli special, the pollo gino, the mixed greens salad, and the shrimp appetizer with a Chilean Sauvignon Blanc. The Cantina is able to pull off an environment that feels both special and completely at home. Love it!"

  • "We have never had a bad meal or bad service. We have been eating at the Cantina Italiana for the past 30 years and I can honestly say not once have we gone away disappointed. Try it you mat just like it enough to make it your home away from home."

  • "This place was incredible! Unlike other north end restraunts where they are just trying to get you in and out, this place had incredible service. Gnocchi was amazing, and was not extremely expensive. Good place for a date."

  • "We wanted to try a North End restaurant and we picked a good one! We were seated in a corner area that was somewhat private, just what the four of us were looking for. Right from the start our server was attentive and very helpful with dinner selections. I chose the homemade bombelotti pasta sautéed with shrimp and lobster in a tomato garlic sauce. It was outstanding! My sister-in-law had the seafood special over linguine, which included clams on the half shell, mussels, shrimp and swordfish. She loved it! My husband and brother both chose the homemade bombelotti with sausage baked in a tomato sauce topped with cheese and loved it! We also had a reasonably priced bottle of wine with our meal. It was a GREAT dinner. I will definitely be back!"

  • "I've been to the cantina twice once for a random date night and this time on valentines day. Both times were a good experience but with the high volume of Valentines day they had to sacrifice some the smaller details that make this restaraunt so great. My favorite thing about the cantina is that they actually serve you in the true italian fashion, They don't rush and they offer plenty of time between courses, plenty of elbow room, and great service. Unlike many of the other "classic italian" restaraunts in the North End that rush you in and out of a coffee shop size restaraunt. Not to say that there aren't other good restaraunts in the North End but this is my favorite. Just try to avoid holidays if you want to see it's true potential."

  • "Had an amazing Valentines Day dinner last Friday night. Always Courteous and Friendly staff. Love your "own" house wines, especially the Cabernet and Merlot, they rival the Napa Valley's best. Began with a fresh Ceasar. Followed with a Veal Parm that is perfection. Never disappoints. Cannot wait to come back!"

  • "We came here on a whim on Saturday night looking to fulfill a pasta craving. Our waiter was awesome. I believe his name is Noel. My little sister has Down syndrome and he was so wonderful- engaging her, remembering her name, and really making her feel special. We had the antipasti special that was excellent and we all greatly enjoyed our main courses. Reasonable prices and a real comforting Italian kitchen vibe."

  • "Had another terrific dinner at Cantina on Saturday night. Omar was friendly and attentive making the dining experience enjoyable. The food was outstanding...my wife had the chicken parmagiana and I had the bomboloti boungastia, my personal favorite. The experience at Cantina was excellent which is why it remains our favorite restaurant in the North End."

  • "This is by far my favorite restaurant in the North End. Every time I've been here its as good or better than the last time. Service is always wonderful and the food is delicious. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone that likes to have a perfect dinner for a perfect price."

  • "When our waiter, Piero, greeted us in Italian I feared that we might be challenged because we are much more mid-westerners than food aficionados. Piero assessed the situation and helped us through the meal in a very friendly and professional manner. The food was great! If you go, ask for Piero!"

  • "We have been trying restaurants in the north end. We wanted to try Cantina Italiana because it was survived so long thought it must be good. And while it was good it was not great. The other restaurants we have tried on the North End (Pomodoro and Aria Trattoria) were significantly better. So given there are so many great choices in the north end I would leave this one off the list."

  • "Have been here many times. In the past the food was excellent but I can't say that for my last 2 visits. They must have changed their sauce because it has no flavor. So many good restrauants in the North End, it's time for me to move on."

  • "We liked the food. Veal Parmesean was excellent as was the spaghetti. Meatballs with spaghetti were decent, yet not as good as Lucia Ristorante across the street. We would recommend this restaurant for lunch or dinner and will be back. Our lunch service was slow; hopefully, it will be better next time."

  • "This is the 4th time I have eaten here and the food / service is always the same, outstanding. Brought my son after the Bruins game and he absolutely loved the restaurant's food selection of home made pastas which are the best in the North End. We will both be back."
