  • "Found out about this restaurant from Avenue Magazine - simply put, the food is delicious! Had the charcuterie and the pairings with the cheeses and condiments were superb. For mains, the beef short rib was so tender and flavourful. Other members of my party had the duck and the poached fish which they enjoyed very much. The 3 options for dessert were so divine that none of us wanted to share. Definitely worth the visit!"

  • "Would have driven past this without looking so glad we booked without knowing where we were going. Decor is not quite industrial but comfortably trendy. Food was very good but not at the rave level however the service was exemplary. Friendly, relaxed and comfortable. Will try again and would recommend."

  • "Have eaten at Canteen twice now and likely won't return. The menu is at odds with what's listed on the website; while the menu is definitely imaginative and aspires to be top drawer, the tastes just aren't there. Had their pork loin on a recent visit and found it bland and the crispy lump of fat that was served as an accompaniment was positively revolting. The uber-modern, minimalist decor is, I suppose, on trend these days but I personally find it cold and uninviting. I have always been a big fan of the Red Ox Inn, which is the parent restaurant of Canteen, but this version is a fail for me."

  • "This is a nice restaurant with good food, but as usual with many restaurants in Edmonton, reviews are abit exaggerated. Generally, the food is good, but I wouldn't recommend the vegetarian scotch egg - spaghetti squash was good but the scotch egg was utterly tasteless. I ate it longing for pork sausage."

  • "Had lunch here the other day. The special was delicious - an orzo salad with a tasty dressing, lots of flavor and a perfectly grilled chicken breast. Attentive, professiomal service and a relaxed atmosphere. We weren't rushed. Setting is clean and modern. I'll definitely eat here again."

  • "We came for lunch on a Saturday and were surprised by a Brunch menu. Which was fine, just unexpected. The service was exceptional: friendly and timely. I had the special, chicken on waffle which was good. My friend ordered the truffle grilled cheese which she said was really satisfying, as were the mushrooms and the hash browns. The only jarring thing was the noise generated by people talking. The acoustics are not good. Or too good."

  • "After reading great reviews about Canteen, we reserved for dinner. It started with a poor cocktail. The Gin Fizz was terribly sweet. The server was friendly, prompt, took it back for a re-do. She was mixing the cocktail herself; there is no bartender at Canteen? For a highly rated restaurant & $25-30 entrees there should be a bartender catering to the cocktails. The smoked pickerel was not smoked at all, it was a fresh pickerel and pan-seared, side was awfully salty, inedible. The vegetarian scotch egg w/ butternut squash - butternut squash was acidic, sour & the scotch egg was served w/ a blue cheese cream. Acidic/sour + blue cheese cream was not a good combo. Our meals were clearly off and unbalanced, something was amiss in the kitchen."

  • "Canteen has a nice small menu, with care taken on each dish. My group of 5 tried everthing on the main course list other then the vegetarian item, and we all loved our dinners. Generous portions sizes, excellent and creative flavours, and great presentation. We were rushed a little by the wait staff, which although understandable for a busy small little place like this but its not like we stopped spending money... 2nd time there still would go back again!"

  • "Had read about Canteen, and was excited to get a table. Cool ambience-mixed crowd. Shared plates so we could sample a lot. Puree of cauliflower dip-yum! Beef carpaccio-so thinly sliced you could read thru it. Again-yum. PEI mussels-could eat a pail of these. My partner loved the broth. The corn fritters with the smoky maple syrup-that maple syrup is to die for! And the crunch of the fritters-perfect. The fennel sausage stuffed dates-interesting. Sweet and savoury and acidic all at the same time. And for desserts-poached pear terrine-good. Mild flavour-needed a kicker for flavour. And sticky toffee pudding-my fav-delicious. Beer selection was good, and my Riesling came perfectly chilled. Have recommended this place already."

The menu selection was great, and the server and kitchen are very helpful in creating vegetarian choices. Our food was delicious, fresh (which isn't always what you get for breakfast in restaurants), and original in it's creation."

  • "We went for brunch here for my parents birthdays. We choose the restaurant because we have previously eaten at Red Ox Inn so wanted to give the sister restaurant a try. We all agreed that we enjoyed the experience and that the food was good. I have already recommended it for brunch to a couple of co-workers. For individuals with hearing aids this may not be the best choice as it is fairly noisy."

  • "We love the Red Ox Inn so we thought we'd give the sister restaurant a try. Restaurant was 3/4 full so the volume level was ok. With nothing on the walls, I can see why some people have mentioned the volume level when its full. Waitresss was good, checking on us throughout but not overbearing at all. Service was quick and friendly. Menu is somewhat limited with both food choices and wine list. Wine prices were reasonable. We tried the Artic Char and the Lamb. Both were very good. Dessert was also very flavourful as well. We will continue to return to the Red Ox Inn, however there is not much pulling us back for a return trip to the Canteen. Having said that, we are glad we tried it once."

  • "My friend and I decided to have dinner out and catch up on what the other has been doing after months of not making time for it. Our server was friendly and accommodating without being overbearing. She put us at ease right away. We had pre-dinner drinks and two wonderful main courses. The fish was cooked to perfection! We also had a tasty dessert each. The restaurant is designed in such a way that sound tends to reverberate in the room, but we were able to have our conversation without having to raise our voices. We would go again."

  • "Second time at Canteen for dinner. My partner liked the pureed cauliflower - light, tasty. We shared the charcuterie plate - enjoyable, could have used some different forms of bread other than toasties. We shared the mussels and fries. The mussels were not as good as the last time - seemed overcooked, with not too much broth. Fries were awesome. Had the poached pear dessert - light and airy, very nice. Capucciino to end the night - very nice. All in all not as good as my last visit, but still a good place for good food."

  • "Food was fantastic, my only "complaint" (?) was that my date and I felt, upon leaving, we wouldn't come back just because we felt as if there was nothing else we wanted to try; partially because of my culinary ignorance (I couldn't understand half of the menu) but there was also not much that made me really want to come back (as in "Ooooh, I wish I could try all of these dishes!") That being said, I have never seen plating as amazing as Canteen and the food, as I said before, was to die for. Just not my place maybe? But a must-try for sure."

  • "Their menu is simple yet had all that you could want. My first time here after my "city rep" recommended it many times in the past ... and she did not disappoint with her recommendation. The Charcuterie Plate was well stocked, Corn Fritters and Maple matched nicely with my Granville Winter Ale and I enjoyed the Lamb with the Apple and Pepper Gastrique for the main. Dessert ... more Winter Ale. Frank and his wife (of Red Ox, another favorite) undeniably has another winner in Canteen."

  • "Canteen always has tasty food with good service. We went there on Valentine's day and were running late. They were able to accommodate us on such a busy night. Service was quick and attentive. They had the lights dimmed down so the atmosphere was very romantic. They have a selection of microbrews which I sampled. After a generous portion of tasty cooked just right mussels, my date had the fish and I had the beef. Dessert was chocolate and finished off the night well."

The chick pea fries were cold, the fritters were heavy and not very good. The cod dish was good. Service was excellent and friendly. The food was pretty good, but we were expecting it to be a little better and exciting. We had no complaints about the food other than we had expected more due to hype we'd heard from friends and family. A really cute restaurant with great staff. Overall, a good experience!"

  • "I had walked past this spot many times and always meant to stop in- never did. Finally found some friends to go out for brunch with and wow, just wow, so tasty. A small brunch menu but they just focus on perfecting everything. Everything was perfect, quickly seated, food came quick, didn't feel pressured to leave although they were clearly busy. I'll be back for sure, so nice it's in walking distance!!!"
