A word from Canoe Restaurant and Bar
Critically acclaimed to be among Canada’s best restaurants, Canoe's unique location high atop the TD Bank Tower affords a breathtaking view of the city and Lake Ontario. The design, originally conceptualized by noted designers Yabu Pushelberg and most recently refreshed by Anacleto Design, is clean and simple, yet absolutely stylish - a brilliant reflection of Canada's rich raw environment. That same brilliance is captured through the flavours and textures of Chef John Horne's inspired regional Canadian cuisine. The menu showcases the freshest and finest Canadian fish, game and produce, as well as an outstanding selection of Canadian vintages. "All that is Canadian defines Canoe." Florence Fabricant, The New York Times

We came to celebrate my daughter's university graduation. All of the staff remembered and frequently congratulated her. A congratulations message was written on her dessert. Will, the sommelier, went out of his way to be attentive and suggested a few variations in the wine matchings on the tasting menu. Since my daughter is studying to be a sommelier, he had some helpful and encouraging things to say to her. A memorable evening. We will come back. David Bain

Overall an excellent experience at Canoe. Although 'tops' on many restaurant lists in Toronto - it was not pretentious or stuffy but friendly and accomodating. As for the food - my partner & I were lured into selecting food we normally don't eat - bison & foie gras - and were overwhelmed. Only 'needs improvement' item: the lobster appetizer was a bit salty but not distractingly so. Tough for a restaurant to meet, let alone exceed, all of the hype but Canoe did and we will return when in Toronto again.

  • Canoe is a gourmet adventure

    Dined on 6/13/2008
Canoe is a gourmet adventure for those who think that there's no such thing as a "Canadian" restaurant or cuisine. The hostess was extremely gracious and our waiter (Claude) was very helpful. Our appetizers were Yukon potato gnocchi & sweetbreads in a fantastic mushroom sauce (ordered off the tasting menu) and a delicious ensemble including fois gras terrine, lobster salad and salmon tartare. Our mains were bison striploin with wild mushrooms, Yukon gold potato confit & peppercorn sauce and a melt-in-your-mouth venison loin (again off the tasting menu) with fois gras terrine, pickled chocolate walnut, red cabbage & honey mushrooms. The "house" cocktails were unremarkable, but that's the only shortcoming-the view is very remarkable!

The food lived up to our expectations. We were particularly impressed with the staff's effort to accommodate our special requests: - placing us at a premier located table since we were hosting a special guest - the staff (both front of house and wait-staff) made us feel very comfortable about bringing our 7-month old baby (e.g., making room for a stroller by our table). This was not something we expected of a highly touted "foodie," restaurant. A definite repeat.

The service was astoundingly appropriate and mature... The staff knew its task and was attentive without being intrusive, the sommelier shared his pleasure in choosing an appropriate wines. The view was beautiful, and begged for special occasions. My discontent was with the food. It was largely unimaginative, no surprises in the mouth, presentation was generic, (I love a simple decorated plate, more than say "verticality", it is not about the sexing up of the presentation. But when dining at a "top" level cuisine resto I expect more nuanced flavours). Finally the utensils and plates, had no finesse (ie saint andrea) but rather came from what I would classify as stock catering fine dining utensils... Go for view and atmosphere.

Very disappointing. While the view is wonderful, food quality, on both appetizers and 'daily specials' was unacceptable for a restaurant of such renown. Dried out goat cheese soufle, dried out, over-salted, overcooked 'crusted salmon' in a weak base. Service offered replacement dishes, but after receiving appetizers instantly and waiting an inappropriately long time for main course, alternatives did not seem worth the wait. All four staff who asked "how's everything?" gave us the same response: "We'll let the chef know" Skip the hype!......try Biff's (same management) as we did ..home after trip to Toronto, we received 3 separate reservation messages from Canoe...all confused -(1 not for us) - all unprofessional

Everything was lovely but we were not 100% satisfied with our server. He was aloof, not terribly accomodating, unfriendly and had long nails (they were clean but it was still unappetizing). The long nails were my main problem. At a restaurant like Canoe, you expect the best and he wasn't the best.

We knew in advance that you were in the TO "top five" so had high expectations. We were not disappointed. To try to be constructive, here are the only faults we could find, and they are trivial: 1) when the waiter delivered the main courses of my wife and me, he had them transposed - we had to correct him; and 2) we had to ask (once only) for a refill of our water glasses, rather than having it been looked after automatically. As I say, these are absolutely minor quibbles - this is the level at which we had to look to find any fault whatsoever! The view, food, wine, and service were all excellent! Thanks.

We'd been to Canoe on our last trip to Toronto and had no idea what it was like - the experience was amazing. This time we dressed for the occasion and although the meal was made incredibly expensive by the price of the wine, it was well worth it; the food was some of the best I've ever tasted, the table was perfect, the view was stunning and the atmosphere was very romantic - our last night in the city this time around was made more memorable by our experience at Canoe, and we'll definitely be going again when we next visit.

We had the Taste Canoe with the wine pairings and it was a beautifully prepared taste experience. It may be a few stories below 360, but it is head and shoulders above in quality. Like all Oliver Bonacini restaurants, I find the atmosphere is outstanding....but the food often disappoints. At the price points they charge, the food should always be a WOW but unfortunately it isn't always. Hit and miss depending on what you order. the food was ok this time but nothing to rave about. Last time it was great. Thsi time average. This is what I mean about the OB restaurants. But the view at Canoe is pretty amazing.
