While not cheap, for a special occasion you will not be disappointed. We were seated right on time at a window table. Our waiter was courteous and knowledgeabe. The food did not disappoint. From the Steak Tartare to the smoked Duck, the nuanced tastes delighted. The restaurant remembered it was my wife's birthday and provided a nice surprise for dessert. The food was exceptionally well executed; the wine list was vast; the seating was especially comfortable; the staff were attentive, friendly, and informative without ever crowding us; and the view was outstanding. Sturgeon was moist, with nice texture and beef cheek was tender, nice flavor. Pork was done perfect, moist meat, bit of sweet maple taste. Food was excellent in terms of quality, taste and finesse and only negative is the very small portions - the ribeye we ordered was probably less than 5oz and blue char about 4oz only. While I can fully appreciate premium prices for high end restaurants, at $40-50 for a main course, a slightly larger portion would only make a dent in their margins. Same for the desert that could be finished in 2 bites. We did the tasting menu and wine pairing. While i enjoyed the different aspects of the meal and found it intriquing, my husband found the quantity of food wanting and very expensive for what we got. Each visit we are thrilled and extremely satisfied with our choice to revisit. From the time we arrive at the hostess station, to arriving at our table, receiving the most incredibly beautiful and delicious food - each minute is filled with a relaxed and easy feeling knowing that we will be treated as if we are the only people in the restaurant. We started with the Buffalo Mozzarella which was as stunning to look at as it was to eat. My olive oil poached salmon was one of the best salmon I have ever eaten. The pumpkin/ginger cheesecake was so surprisingly scrumptious! Staff were professional, courteous and attentive, and took great care to explain the composition of each dish and drink. Canoe was not at all pretentious, which made the experience very warm and welcoming. We thoroughly enjoyed the experience and will definitely return. We had the Taste menu with matched wines - our server was very knowledgable about the food and the wine, and was very friendly yet also extremely professional. With so many courses, we found there was more than enough food (we both struggled to finish dessert), and the food itself was amazing!!! In addition to your meal, you are paying for the rent. Prices are steep with most entrees hovering just below $50. They don't have specials and the menu (a la carte or a tasting menu) is somewhat limited. Two of us had the venison and one had the rib eye (ordered it rare and came out perfectly medium rare). But the steak was a bit fatty for a $50 piece of meat. Still, the mustard aioli sauce was fantastic. As starters we tried the tartare, but it was not worthwhile. We didn't have dessert, but we were acknowledged for the birthday occasion with some treats. With a simple bottle of wine, tax, and tip our bill was $400 for three. The staff are very attentive and very knowledgeable about the menu items they offer. The chefs are quite accommodating and everyone make you feel as if you were royalty. My favourite dish is the gnocchi! It is perfectly prepared and blended with mushrooms and a mushroom cream sauce that leaves you wanting more. The wines are not inexpensive, but always paired nicely with whatever dish you order and there is a wide selection to choose from.
I would always recommend Canoe and continue to dine there.12/19/2012 12:00:00 AMPerfect Place for a Special EveningI can't say enough about how great Canoe is, from the moment we got there, I already know it's going to be a perfect birthday dinner for me; where we sat with the view, it's just breathtaking! Food is amazing from our starter with seafood platter and foie gras, then rideye and venison as our main courses and our dessert, caramel date pudding with mango sherbet is just so perfect! I have never order pudding for my dessert but this is definitely something I would consider to order again in a future! ;) Of course I didnt forget to have a bottle of Zinfindel to accompany with our dinner there!
