A word from Cannery Restaurant
Capture a magical moment of Niagara-on-the-Lake’s past as you dine in one of its most historic buildings. The four-diamond Cannery Restaurant of today is reminiscent of its former life as a canning factory in the 1800s, where Niagara peaches and tomatoes were canned until 1957. Its agricultural past has been lovingly retained in its décor of rough hewn wooden beams, rich red brick walls and a hearth at the heart of the restaurant. Chef Mark Longster continues to serve up the best of the region in his menus which feature the freshest local produce and fine wines. Charming and casual Cannery Restaurant is the place to find all your favorites, from succulent steaks to catch of the day to a fabulous Sunday brunch. Chef Longster's food is prepared and presented perfectly, for your ultimate dining experience.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "From the moment I called to make a reservation and also put a request to have a table by the fire-place and a bottle champagne waiting for me for my wifes birthday, everything was as I had ordered. the staff was great the guy who took the reservation did a great job following up that the table was set to my request. Our waitress was great she would stop by to ask how everything was going but gave us our privacy not stopping by every 5mins, the food was excellent and Cannery restaurant it self was a great place. the food wall excellent. definitely going back to this place on my next occasion. thanks to all the staff"

  • "The dinner our group had was amazing. The tender steak had flavor and the lobster tail was superb."

  • "My wedding party had our breakfast together here before the big event, and it was the perfect spot. We may have been the only group in the place, but still - the service was quick, the food was great, and the waitress even let us practice our kazoo playing in the restaurant (an important part of the ceremony!)."

  • "The food was amazing, our service was great. Over indulged but it was worth it. The only negative was that it was too hot and the wedding caused noise levels and traffic through the restaurant to take away from the romance of the occasion."

  • "We have been coming to the Pillar & Post for thirty five years and have never been disappointed. We look forward to our next visit."

  • "My fiancée and I went there for her 50th birthday. We couldn't have chosen a better place. It met all our expectations and then some. The menu had great choices to choose from. The hostess and waitress treated us like we were their friends and were very open to discuss the menu and suggest wines and favorite foods. The ambiance had soft background music, not too loud and appropriate for the setting. We really enjoyed our stay and would go back in a heartbeat!"

  • "The service and food was exceptional. They took care of all our special needs with the menu and made our dining experience wonderful. The restaurant is a little quiet but if you are looking for a nice dinner out and want to be able to talk to your partner, this is the place."

  • "Not worth the price for the brunch. Food was terrible and the service was just okay."

  • "A lovely place to dine. Delicious food and great atmosphere."

  • "The Cannery restaurant came highly recommended however we were disappointed with the quality and amount of good based on the price. The waitress told us they are known for their steaks but to compare to some chain restaurants (The Keg, Canyon Creek) we didn't find it any better at all, just more expensive. The ambience is nice but again a lot of money for nothing special."

  • "Service was extremely slow. Waitress forgot to bring us bread until appie arrived, never once poured our wine, mixed up order so one guest had to wait 10 extra minutes for meal to arrive while others were eating."

  • "We had a terrible experience at one of the other Vintage restos but decided that we'd try the Cannery as it didn't seem as snooty. The meal was great! From top to tail. The appetizers were terrific and the main (we both had the prime rib) was just as good as they promised it to be, the service was top notch and would definitely go back again."

  • "The atmosphere was warm and friendly. Food was extremely disappointing, however, especially the dessert. No offer of wine pairings provided, not even when a sommelier was requested. Food came as if it was a fast food restaurant. Would not recommend this for a romantic dining experience. Unfortunately we will not return to this restaurant for dinner again."

  • "I have been here before and usually superb, however this time around it appeared a little dead with not as many food options. Not sure why but we were crammed in to a small corner spot. Food was mediocre compared to previous experiences with the exception of the omelet chef, he was excellent. I may go back still, maybe it was a bad one time experience, it seems they may have just given us the American treatment and stashed us away in the cold dark corner this time."

  • "We dined here twice as a family with three small kids. The staff were great both for the evening meal and breakfast. The kids ordered pizzas off the kids menu and we enjoyed our crab cakes, mushroom soup and Stilton Tenderloin. The bread and wine were great. We didn't have time or room for dessert so we ordered room service later in the evening and were equally impressed with the cheesecake and creme brulee. The next morning at breakfast, there were many items to choose from - omelettes & waffles were made to order and were delicious. Great selection of hot food - bacon, sausages, french toast, etc. fresh fruits, yogurts, smoked salmon, breads and pastries. There was nothing missing!"

  • "This year was our first Valentine's Day as husband and wife. As we have eaten at the Pillar and Post a few times before, we decided to go again for our first valentines as a married couple. The service and food as always, was professional and the food was amazing. We are always looking for restaurants that actually allow you to hear the person next to you speaking and the Pillar and Post provide this. Whether you are on a first date or been many times before, we would strongly recommend that you check out this restaurant."

  • "The cuisine was excellent. My only gripe is that there was nothing on the wine list for under $60. I'm sure the wines were worth it, but a couple of choices at the lower-end would have been welcome."

  • "We went to Niagara on the Lake for our anniversary. We had a package with the price of wales hotel which included dinner at any of their sister properties. We chose the Cannery because it sounded like a great steak place. The food, the service and the ambiance was all outstanding. My husband had the steak and lobster tail and I had the veal chop. The package included an appetizer and dessert. Again, all outstanding."

  • "Our table was not ready but had been vacated for some time. Hostess scurried to set up our table (forgetting side plates). We waited 10 min to be greeted by our server and asked 4 times for soup special. (She hollered to another server to ask about the soup.) Our food was good but overpriced; I expect to pay a premium to eat onsite at a spa hotel, but then I expect superior service. The service was more akin to a family diner than a "four diamond" steakhouse/spa dining room. Dining at the Cannery was a disappointing experience. I would not recommend it primarily because of the service."

  • "Had a great time, service was great, nice quiet dinning experience We both had beef tenderloin steak...cooked to perfection and one of the most tasting tender steak ever Had the tenderloin spinach salad with goat cheese as a starter....amazing They serve us a complementary cracker with warm goat cheese and walnut topping...wow This place left us with a lasting impression when my wife received her dessert dish they wrote on there Happy Anniversary on the plate...such a small thing, but made us feel great."

  • "Extremely disappointing. The prime rib was small with lots of fat and not well-cooked. It looks like they must buy their ingredients from the lowest cost supplier. The service was slow and amateurish. Will never go back. Food at the Keg is far superior and much less expensive"

  • "We really enjoyed ourselves for a special New Years eve dinner. The waiter was knowledgeable and service was great. Food was fantastic. Wines are a bit on the pricy side, however good recommendations were made."

  • "With all the advertisements of their 4-diamond rating I was expecting to be blown away by the food. The setting was nice, our server was a doll, but the food left much to be desired. I had the prime rib; which on its own was okay, but the yorkshire pudding was cold and could use at least a few more spoons of gravy. My girlfriend had the stirfry, which was good, but nothing I couldn't make at home. She said it was a little on the sweet side but I enjoyed the taste that I had. We had an espresso for dessert which was overpriced, watery, and not even a full shot. Overall, if I were to pay $20 for each dinner I would have been pleased. The food was not bad, but left much to be desired given the ratings and price-point."

  • "The menu is classically steak house with some very nice additional offerings. In addition, the kitchen had a number of creative options for vegetarians that weren't on the formal menu but offered as soon as vegetarian options were requested. Particularly nice on a cold, winter night."

  • "My boyfriend and I went to the Cannery for their Christmas Day brunch and it was delicious and more importantly, fresh. They refresh the items often. The only complaint is the wine list. Why don't they offer 1/2 Litres?"

  • "buffet was a little on the usual side for a brunch - nothing special, but the high price! try adding shrimp, crab for appeal to something special"

  • "We used to take my husband's parents to the Pillar and Post for Christmas Eve dinner. We have fond memories of great food and an ambiance that can't be beat. It did not disappoint when my daughter and I returned for Christmas Eve dinner. The wait staff was very friendly and attentive. The venue is gloriously decorated for Christmas. The food was excellent and perfectly seasoned. It is comforting that as much as things change in this world, you can still count on some traditions to stand up to time."

  • "We are never disappointed by The Cannery at the Pillar and Post. The food is amazing - real, hearty food with just enough of a gourmet touch to make it special but not weird. The ambiance is romantic and rustic with the huge fire places and wood beam architecture - especially lovely at this time of year decorated for the holidays. The atmosphere and food are terrific but what really makes this place special is the service we get. Every time we have visited the staff make us feel like family. They are very attentive with keeping our plates cleared and our drinks full. They remember us even though it has been a year since we visited. They call us by name and ask how our stay was. They genuinely make us feel like they care and are special."

  • "We celebrated our 44 wedding Anniversary and the food and the service and the place matched! Outstanding Friendly and caring. We were greeted like we were the most important people there and the rest of the experience matched. The food was wonderful the pace just right would go again and would take anyone there."

  • "The food was good, our server was great but the ambiance was cold as there were very few people and so many empty tables plunked everywhere. Certainly the lobby was well decorated but didn't think our area in the dining room showed much. Value for money was good. Not sure we'd come back."

  • "We enjoyed a romantic evening and a wonderful meal, the servers are amazing. A must try is the seafood sampler and the steak topped with stilton blue cheese! Everything was done to perfection and very fresh. Perfect for a special occasion. There is a package you can get if you are staying over, worth every penny! includes an App, meal, and dessert for 2."

  • "My wife and I spent our anniversary at the Pillar and Post and greatly enjoyed our dinner at the Cannery. I had requested a table by the fireplace. Our server Derek was very knowledgeable and made suggestions as appropriate. Each course was well prepared and as an added touch, each of our desserts had Happy Anniversary written on the plate in chocolate. I would highly recommend the Cannery."

  • "A few of us mentioned that their dinners were not hot. It was good but very predictable. I suggested to the group that if we hadn't been to Trius the night before we would have been more satisfied with The Cannery. There was quite a difference in the level of service etc between the two places, not to say the service at The Cannery was poor but the service at Trius was special so dining at both back to back made the difference more apparent."
