Diner Reviews
  • "We had a relatively early reservation but I wasn't expecting to be the only ones in the restaurant at 415pm. It was eerily quiet & being the only ones there we felt like we were being stared at by all of the staff. I was surprised to see that it had most of what was on 79's menu at the same price(seems the pricing would be lower at the café than the head restaurant) & when the food came out (seitan piccata, I get it every time I'm at 79) it was done much more sloppily than at 79. Instead of the potatoes being creamy & the seitan being slightly crispy, the seitan was soaked in the sauce and the potatoes were dry & sticky. Our drinks & appetizers took too long to get to us. Skip the café, go to Candle 79 for a better ambiance, service & food!"

  • "I have loved this place for years, but you know the food is great when my steak and potatoes, non-vegan brother-in-law wants to go back!!!"

  • "Met a Vegan friend for dinner. I've always been put off by vegan food; most of what I've tasted was much like cardboard in taste and texture. And then there is the (to my mind) hypocrisy of rejection of meat, only to be replaced with Vegan fake bacon, hamburgers, meatballs, etc. Why emulate something that is so offensive? What brains are at work here? As an aside, when I travelled in India several years ago, I transitioned from eating all foods to what can be defined as a vegetarian diet. Why did that happen? Because the preparation, variety, flavors and texture were outstanding. That is my Candle 79 takeaway. Everything I ate: Salad; Celeriac Purée; a Tempeh creation; fudgey Choc Cake was so satisfyingly good, I could be a convert."

  • "I'm a big fan of the Candle Cafe restaurants though I have to say the one on the West side is quickly becoming my favorite. The food is amazing (the peanut butter chocolate mousse pie is out of this world), the staff is friendly, attentive though not overbearing and ambience is fabulous--just an overall comfortable, wonderful place to dine."

  • "Came for dinner the day prior and wanted to come back again the next day for brunch, this time bringing my in-laws! And they loved it! Every item on the menu is delish! Service is efficient and friendly. Too bad parking is a little tough or we'd be there every week!"

  • "We have eaten at this restaurant before and enjoyed their vegan menu and food. However on this evening we had a rude and condescending waitress. By the time our food was served we had had enough and ended up leaving without eating. Management did comp the beverages we had ordered but overall it was a very disappointing experience, to the point where it is highly unlikely we will return."

  • "Despite making reservations, parties are two are always placed at cramped tables within inches of each other ."

  • "I had a pleasant time at the restaurant. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable. The food was good. I had the seitan meal which was to die for. The risotto was okay. I will definitely return to sample all of the standards on the menu."

  • "Food was under seasoned, lacked savor. The titles of the dishes better than the eating."

  • "This was our first visit to Candle Cafe West but not our last. Our reservation was for 7p, we got there 15 min early and our table still had diners seated. While waiting at the bar our party ordered various mixed drinks and everyone of them was delicious. Fresh ginger, vanilla added to the delight. The bartender was awesome - entertaining as well as informative. When the table was finally ready 7:15 we ordered appetizer for our group of 6. The waitstaff was awesome and very attentive and responsive. We all really enjoyed the appetizers as well as the entrees. We were a little disappointed that the food is not as good or as artistically plated as Candle79 on the Upper East Side. Overall we had a great experience and would come back again."

  • "This is the place to go to if you're looking for great food, service and ambience. We were seated in a perfect spot and had fun experimenting with the different foods. The Mexican chocolate cake was the perfect finish to a wonderful dinner. A neighborhood gem worth visiting again."

  • "Terrific food, good service, and healthy. Room for improvement might be more gluten-free offerings. Otherwise, this place is a gem."

  • "With 2/3 or our party being neither vegan nor vegetarian, we all enjoyed the variety, tastiness, presentation and healthfulness of the menu offerings. The service was efficient and friendly and, when the waitress approached to ask if we wanted dessert and saw we were in an intense (but happy) conversation, she read the situation well and came back a few minutes later."

  • "Because they can eat everything on the menu. Other mortals have to pick and choose among strange sounding dishes, all of which come in huge portions. Some of the combinations, the simpler ones, are tasty. Others seem "hyper" and overly "creative"."

  • "I ordered a daily special - almond coated seitan; it was a heavy, tasteless lump with no sign of almonds. I simply could not eat it and told the waiter who immediately offered to replace it with anything else. The second entree was marginally better and I was able to eat it, but also lacking in flavor and the accompanying vegetables were undercooked. This restaurant had been highly recommended to me and it seems popular, which made the tastelessness of the two entrees I tasted very surprising."

  • "My wife and I had dinner Monday night. Restaurant was full but not crowded. Had three apps and entree. Had excellent bottle of wine. Each dish was excellent. While two were stand-outs, everything was delicious. Cost was $140."

  • "Everything was perfect at Candle Cafe West - the food, the service and the setting. This is the best vegetarian restaurant on the UWS, and perhaps in the city."

  • "Some of the best food anywhere is always abundant at the candle cafe west, and all of the candle restaurants. Everyone I bring there loves it - the service is great and the staff is helpful about explaining the unusual dishes and sensitive to guest's food allergies."

  • "Outstanding food & the atmosphere is really lovely in the main dining area. Perfect service. Nice wine list as well. Only complaint was our seating. Because they were so busy, our reservation afforded us a choice between right next to the door or a rear section near the dishwashing room. We opted for the rear since it was extremely cold that night and it wasn't optimal to be sitting near a door which opened frequently. Granted, they had heavy curtains to minimize the freezing breezes but it was bitter! We wound up switching to the front table because of the dishwasher smell and hustle/bustle in the rear room. The restaurant was very accommodating; the rest of the evening was excellent. HIGHLY RECOMMEND but make reservations!"

  • "Everything about the Candle franchise is fantastic!! Especially the food! The only issue I have with them is their gift card policy... They're NOT interchangeable at ALL! I had what I believed to be a Candle 79 gift card and tried to use it at the restaurant and got denied because it was a "Candle cafe" gift card and then when I came to the "Candle Cafe West" location they again denied the card stating that I could only use it at the Candle Cafe on the East side... Very frustrating to say the least... This should be changed to allow reciprocity or at least clearly state it on their cards... Which they don't!"

  • "We went on my birthday after a show and it was the perfect pairing for my birthday. The staff was just the right amount of attentive. The food was excellent. My date isn't vegetarian and could find accessible options at every course. Dessert was as indulgent as it should be on a birthday."

  • "I had my birthday brunch here with 11 people on a Sat. They sat us right away, Service was good, and food was great. It's a bit pricey in my opinion, but the food is creative, tasty, and portion sizes are good. I would recommend this to a friend and will return myself!"

  • "Who sais eating vegetarian was tasteless? This spot was a great option for my bf and I. We are both vegetarian but also like the meatlike texture of seitan. Candle restaurant was great all over. I just wanted to try everything! We shared the mushroom and spinach pate, a kale salad and the seitan piccata. Oh! And the peanut butter chocolate pie was to die for. Tottaly worth it. The waitress was genuinely friendly and the ambiance was romantic."

  • "I'm an omnivore, but I have no qualms with vegan fare. This restaurant produces beautiful and delicious food consistently. The live lasagna and the seitan sandwich are great. The brunch prix fixe is a wonderful deal. I recommend the pumpkin cheesecake for dessert, despite the lack of actual cheese. It's thick and flavorful, as a cheesecake should be."

  • "Bring your meat eating friends here for a delicious meal. Candle Cafe West is happy mix between Candle Cafe and Candle 79 with the seiten chimichurris and great salads. Desserts are also delicious and my guest still wondered how they were vegan."

  • "My wife and I Yelped this restaurant and made a reservation, arrived early and they were able to accommodate us a half hour prior to our reservation. The host ladies were very helpful and kind in seating us. The menu had a variety of tastes that suited all palates, and our waiter came by quickly to ask us our water preferences, and told us the specials. We made our selections and both appetizer of vegan nachos and our entrees were prepared perfectly, tasted great, and our waiter checked on us both during appetizer and entree service to make sure we were happy with our meal. We skipped dessert but were very happy with this establishment and would recommend it to friends who are interested in an upscale vegetarian/vegan dining experience."

  • "Hello, This restaurant on the Upper West Side is simply the best suitable for vegans I've been to in New York. Granted I've just started looking into it. This is solid and competes easily with the best San Francisco or Portland vegetarian/vegan kitchens."

  • "My husband is a vegetarian, so when he's able to order anything off a menu without having to think twice about it, he's in heaven. Amazing flavors and textures, perfectly cooked, and a Mexican chocolate cake to die for. We have no doubts that we'll be back."
