Diner Reviews
  • "Last night was not a good meal but most of the time the food is over the top fabulous!!"

  • "A wonderful restaurant with great choices for vegans--delicious for us non-vegans that don't want too many tofu products! Lots of choices--lots of yummy foods!!"

  • "Since discovering Candle Cafe West a year ago we've remained faithful to its good food and fine service. We've never had a disappointing meal or overall experience at the restaurant, and friends we've referred have been similarly pleased. Candle Cafe boasts non-meat food that is both tasty and attractive, ad carnivores may be surprised by how delicious non-meat alternatives can be!"

  • "Two friends of ours from SF and they're vegetarian. They want to spend the evening with 5 of us. So I picked this restaurant and made a special request for a round table. They said the round table is good for six people but I asked to let us have it for 7 people. They didn't argue and went for it. It was perfect. WE had a blast time catching up with fabulous food and service. The service was amazing! We definitely will come back!!!"

  • "Tasty, creative vegetarian but quite expensive. Be sure to ask for the cost of specials (like at many other restos, server does not volunteer this info) so as to avoid sticker shock when you get your check!"

  • "Candle cafe has great food even for non vegans. Their replica of the piccata was amazing as well as the ravioli. Sure will delight even the most sceptical person!"

  • "I've been to Candle Cafe many times on the east side; I remembered it was pricey, but honestly, I was hoping for a little more from my meal. For the price I paid, I would expect a little more. I felt like some of the vegetables were not fresh and had been frozen. Overall, service was great, meals tasted good...I just felt like I wanted a little more bang for my buck. I'd try it again."

  • "The ambience and decor is warm and inviting. The service was excellent at all levels - what you would find at a very expensive establishment. That being said, what you come here for is the food. You won't miss the meat at this upscale vegan restaurant. The dishes went from sumptuous to bright and lively. A truly wonderful experience. We will definitely come here again."

  • "Vegetarian to me has always been equated with healthy and less so with "exciting!" However, the food here was exciting and tasty! I ordered two appetizers since I have a smaller appetite and they were ample and delicious."

  • "My 3rd time in, this was for my girlfriend's birthday. The food was outstanding, our service attentive and sweet, and an excellent drinks selection. I will absolutely be in again, at some point in the future -- hopefully sooner than later."

  • "Notably very good service. Staff are very helpful, friendly, informative and co-ordinate very well with each other to make your experience seamless and enjoyable. Food is very good too, especially the ravioli and the potato fries."

  • "candle cafe is one of the predominant vegetarian restaurants in the usa. We went with a friend who is hard core carnivore, he totally enjoyed his meal."

  • "my non veg friends didn't notice that there is no meat until after I told them."

  • "We took my husband here for Father's Day. All of the dishes we ordered were beautifully plated and delicious. He had a brunch special. I had the Mezze Plate, my daughter had seitan skewers. We started with dumplings and ended with a hot strawberry-rhubarb cobbler a la mode. Service wasn't rushed, but our waitress was attentive and enthusiastic. A very enjoyable and delicious vegan meal."

  • "awesome food always but need more bean entrees and fewer tofu/seitan/tempeh entrees--give us the real stuff"

  • "To have a place in the neighborhood that serves healthy/ vegan food that is presented beautifully is a gift. The atmosphere rivals any other place and dining at the bar is great. The staff is one of the most responsive and pleasant I've experienced. It seems like they're doing well and I'm not surprised. Go Candle Cafe!"

  • "We visited Candle Café West for lunch before a Broadway show. Our appetizer, juice and entrees were fresh, well prepared and seasoned just right. All the flavours of the ingredients combined for a wonderful taste sensation. Service was fast and the restaurant was in quick walking distance from the subway making it a breeze to have a healthy, fun, organic meal before the show!"

  • "So many chefs have great ideas that simply aren't executed well. Flavors and textures that would work if they were better balanced or less extreme. Undercooked or over toasted. If you've ever bitten into a sandwich with bread toasted harder than the contents, your stained pants can attest. However, Candle Cafe nailed it. Nothing was over the top, every flavor held its own, nothing was a challenge to actually get into my mouth. The selections we had we not everyday but not on the edge either, creating a comfortable but extremely satisfying experience. We were very happy with the entire experience and look forward to returning. "

  • "The food at Candle Cafe West is excellent! Everything is fresh, tasty, and original. It's hard to believe how many foodstuffs are not used in the preparation- no meat, no fish, no milk, dairy, cheese or eggs;yet the food is so tasty! The vegetables and grains are amazingly good ! So are the desserts and coffees. "

  • "Our waitperson didn't tell us specials tho he told next table. We thought the tempeh dish wasn't as good as other dishes we've had. Tge bitter greens were too much and too strong a flavor. The cobbler was delish. "

  • "Outstanding, elegantly prepared and presented vegan dishes (that would fool carnivores) -- from appetizers to desserts, a real treat for the palate. "

  • "I really like this place, every time I go back there I enjoy great food, and good atmosphere. When I have guests in town I take them there and they are amazed by the fact that this food is vegan."

  • "Surprised that vegan could be so tasty and while good for you. "

  • "We always go to candle 79 and we love it. The cafe is not quite as special but still great food and more local to us. We'll definitely go back! "

  • "We took a vegetarian friend visiting from India. We're not vegetarians, but eat a lot of vegan food during the religious fasts. This was our first visit. The recipes were creative and beautifully presented, and thankfully not greasy, heavy or bland. Pleasantly surprised by the decent wine choices. The mezze plate was truly delicious. The chimichurri seitan had a pleasing grilled taste, but the sauce just tasted like seasoned mayo. The slab of morel crusted tofu was perfectly toasted, but sitting in a bed of sloshy "something" we decided best to avoid after tasting it. This restaurant is a great value at the price point, and in a neighborhood with limited vegetarian options, worth a visit."

  • "Really enjoyed trying something new. The Nachos, Raviolis and Spaghetti and Wheat balls were outstanding. I would recommend for vegans, vegetarians or people wanting to try something new! "

  • "I wanted a reservation for 815, but there was only a reservation for 9:00 available on open table so I wrote in the comments of my reservation for them to please call me if anything opened up earlier(not thinking that they actually would) and on the morning of my reservation they called me and left a voice mail. I returned their voice mail and they gladly accommodated my request I was very impressed. The food and service reflected the same high standard. As someone who is mostly vegan it was amazing for me to be able to pick anything from the menu! However, this is one of the few vegan places that I would happily take non vegan folks. So completely delicious! We will definitely be back to this upper west side gem! "

  • "It's great to have a full menu of delicious and innovative vegan dishes to choose from -- the only downside is that it is difficult to decide what to order! Every time I have eaten at Candle West (and other Candles) I have been with non-vegetarians and they have all been happy and impressed with the food. Candle West was perfect for our birthday celebration (including delicious desserts)."

  • "This restaurant has become a staple for upper west side dining. It's relatively affordable, and the food is beautifully and deliciously prepared. I (and the majority of the people I have brought here) am an omnivore, but I do not miss meat when I eat here. I generally disapprove of food items that pose as other things (i.e. lemon cheesecake at a vegan restaurant), but they do such a great job with it I can't complain about that. The service was excellent."

  • "As always, food was great! Service was very good as well. Thanks Candle Cafe West!"

  • "Enjoyed a gourmet organic vegan dinner before attending the opera at the Met. Empanadas, rigatoni special, Indian dish, encrusted tofu-all very delicious. Great service; friendly and attentive. We sat at the window. Safe, family neighborhood. Many nearby parking lots. Fabulous organic wine list. We greatly enjoyed a French red one that was smokey and robust."

  • "Wanted to try a new culinary experience. I imagine it would be perfect for vegans. There was a very satisfied buddist monk enjoying his meal. I am a real foodie and I love new flavours but this eas not mind blowing nor memorable. The food eas expensive, 100 for 2 for lunch. Not huge prtions, just right. The staff was really friendly and generous in explaining the menu and wine list. Nice bodega. I think you might appreciate how special tbe food is if you are vegan, otherwise I was not impressed although excellently presented the food was bland, veggies overcooked. "
