Candle 79Organic & Vegetarian goodnessThey always have creative and delicious meals and you can never go wrong with one of their cocktails (all of their liquors are 10% organic).6/15/2013 12:00:00 AMWonderful dining experience!!Delicious, interesting, gourmet vegan restaurant. Beautiful, serene atmosphere, wonderful service, leisurely dining. Would defi itely go back...highly recommend!6/15/2013 12:00:00 AMeternal mustn't misscandle 79 is probably my favorite place in town, never fails, gets better every time. This is not your regular veggie place, food is absolutely creative, tasty, and you always walk out saying "i'll be back", and you do. Do not miss, absolutely worthwhile.6/14/2013 12:00:00 AMThe food was excellent. TheThe food was excellent. The vegan nachos were absolutely amazing, and the chipotle seitan was remarkable.6/14/2013 12:00:00 AMFabulous vegan food!!!I love when I can eat anything on the menu, (all vegan). Everything was great! I highly recommend.6/14/2013 12:00:00 AMFut for Vegetarian FoodiesGreat vegetarian food. Fresh, flavorful and well prepared and presented.
Service is very good.6/13/2013 12:00:00 AMOne of the best restaurants around!A friend recommended this restaurant to me while I was visiting New York, as a good venue for a couple of vegetarians (me recent; she a lifer).
We returned for a second meal the next night & had lunch at its West Side cousin, Candle Cafe, the next day.
Both places are vegan, but the food would be fantastic in an omnivore joint. What I'm saying is that it doesn't matter whether you are omnivore, vegetarian, or vegan--this is one of the best restaurants I've ever visited, in any town, for any type of food.
The ambience is also quite nice (West Side Cafe is, not unexpectedly, more casual than the East Side restaurant).
The front of house staff are as good as the food, for that matter--uniformly friendly and helpful.6/12/2013 12:00:00 AMSpot to put on your to eat at listSecond visit to New York & had to include a stop here. Brought non-veg friends who really enjoyed their meals.6/8/2013 12:00:00 AMI love this place and dineI love this place and dine here often, but unfortunately we will not be returning due to the switch to sunflower oil. My husband is highly algeric to sunflower, which didn't allow us to enjoy the restaurant the way we usually do. We are very disappointed at the change.6/8/2013 12:00:00 AMEating Vegan in New York.Who knew we would find this fabulous, completely vegan restaurant? The food was fabulous - anyone skeptical of eating vegan would be thrilled with anything on the menu here. The presentation was beautiful. The desserts were out of this world!6/7/2013 12:00:00 AMThe vegan food is always wonderfulThe vegan food is always wonderful here. My favorite is the seitan chimmichuri. Spaghetti and wheat balls is terrific. I have never had a dish here that I didn't like.6/6/2013 12:00:00 AMVegetarian for GourmandsWe've been dining here for several years now, and always enjoy the inventively vegetarian menu. Even if you're not a vegetarian or vegan, you will find the selections, changed seasonally, fresh, creatively presented and delicious. Ingredients are strictly organic and locally sourced where possible. Very good wine list, too, many of the offerings organic. Noise level can be high at tables near the bar, but it's much quieter upstairs Highly recommended!6/4/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat for Lunch!Healthy portions of creative, well-balanced, and tasty vegetarian fare, even down to the choice of almond or soy milk for my coffee. I made a reservation and got a seat by the window. Service was very friendly, yet professional, and we didn't have to wait long for the food. It wasn't too busy midday, so it was quiet enough for my friend and I to hear each other, but not so quiet that everyone around us knew our business. Will definitely return!6/4/2013 12:00:00 AMHigh end vegetarianWe had a nice dinner at candle 79. The best part was the starter, a guacamole dish with banana crisps. Main dish was quite bland, so bland I no longer remember what I had. Wine was good, and so was the service. The place was packed, good atmosphere.6/4/2013 12:00:00 AMWonderful food. Needs face lift. For vegan fine dining, look no further. The food is top notch and delicious. Honestly, you don't need to be vegan or vegetarian as the menu will suit all tastes, but it's a pretty special place for vegans to dine at. My only gripe after going here a few times is that the restaurant looks dated and feels dark. It really would benefit from a face lift - something more modern. The decor & energy in the restaurant just doesn't match the amazing & special food.6/2/2013 12:00:00 AMThe food is outstanding. VeryThe food is outstanding. Very flavorful, fresh and delicious. For vegetarians like me, this is like a gem discovered. I went and bought the cookbook right away. I can't wait to try out some of the dishes!
I had requested the best romantic seating possible. I made the reservation more than a month ago online. The spot that we got, though comfortable, was not quiet or romantic. I would have preferred the window. Now, I don't know if someone had reserved the window even earlier than us. I was disappointed with this. The restaurant was noisy. Neighbors were loud. The decor and seating could use some overhauling.6/1/2013 12:00:00 AMExcellent dining experienceThis is one of my favourite restaurants in NYC and I always make a point to come here when I am visiting. The service is flawless and the food is always delicious. Our dessert was also taken off of our bill when the waitress thought it took too long for it to arrive, which was very nice of them to do and shows just how serious they are about providing outstanding service.6/1/2013 12:00:00 AMLOVE!We love, LOVE this place! We're from New Orleans and now live in Toronto - and get to NYC as much as we can. We often eat here when we're in town. It's wonderful beyond words if you're vegan or vegetarian - and faaaabulous even if you're not. We highly recommend this place......6/1/2013 12:00:00 AMNot being a vegitarian
A wonderfulNot being a vegitarian
A wonderful surprise
Enjoyed the food emencly5/31/2013 12:00:00 AMA Place That Continues To Impress.Dinner at Candle 79 is always an event. The food is inventive and always satisfying. The staff is attentive, friendly and possess an in depth knowledge of the menu. And one of the owners, Benay always seems to be around making certain that her guests are happy and being taken care of.5/31/2013 12:00:00 AMOne thingThe waitress left our table to another one mid-service, which was weird. It wasn't that late. Overall service was slow, but food was really, really good.5/29/2013 12:00:00 AMFabulous FoodI took my girlfriend here when she visited me in NYC. She's a vegetarian, and I was looking to take her to the best vegetarian restaurant in the city. I found this place online, and saw excellent reviews. After asking a few friends, I decided to try it out and it was absolutely phenomenal. Great food, great vibe, great location. Simply excellent.5/28/2013 12:00:00 AMTry the SaladCandle 79 has the best salads. They are so filling and have so much flavor and texture that you forget you are eating a salad.5/26/2013 12:00:00 AMNot Just for VegetariansMy partner and I had a reservation at a great burger place. Then she read about this restaurant, so I cancelled our prior reservation and we went to Candle 79. I'm pretty much a meat and potatoes gal - but she's a vegetarian and I aim to please. Nothing appealed to me, so I ordered the Moroccan Chick Pea Something, thinking that would probably not be too bad. It was great! I loved it! And she gave me a bite of her Something that looked like scallops but of course wasn't. And I loved that, too! I loved the decaf coffee with some strange non-cream and I loved the dessert and - I loved the entire experience! This is really a terrific restaurant and it's a sure bet we'll be returning.5/26/2013 12:00:00 AMHighly recommendedCandle cafe, and especially Candle 79 has become one of my to-go places when going out. I have developed some allergies and I have to be very careful with what I eat. I can definitely have a treat when going to Candle 79 and not feeling restricted at all. The waiters have always been very professional and very aware of the ingredients on the menu and what I can eat and what not. And I brought non-vegetarian men (very skeptical about that kind of food) and they loved it :)5/26/2013 12:00:00 AMFANTASTIC MEALI met 5 friends in NYC and had an amazing meal at Candle 79. I'm gluten free and particular about my diet. I had multiple options for entrees, great service, the food more than met my expectations and the waitress even let us split up the bill with 4 different credit cards. The place is exemplary!5/24/2013 12:00:00 AMWe had one of the best veganWe had one of the best vegan dinners in NYC at the Candle79. Wish we had such a good place in Hamburg too.5/23/2013 12:00:00 AMfavorite placeBest place to find incredibly delicious vegan food that is lovely to look at and combines unusual but well balanced ingredients. Never fails to delight!5/21/2013 12:00:00 AMThe best VEGAN ever!!But even if you are a carnivore, you must go. The food is so good - try it!5/19/2013 12:00:00 AMAmazing food!!We were referred to Candle 79 by some friends and we loved it!! We'll definitely be back soon!5/19/2013 12:00:00 AMA Place for Celebrations.I have been coming here for years and have always come away being surprised by the creativity and consistency of the kitchen. They seemingly never have an off day. The staff is well chosen, professional and friendly. And, since they tend to be long time employees, they really know the menu. And the owners care. One of them is always there making sure you are having the experience that you hoped for.5/18/2013 12:00:00 AMWonderful food!Food was terrific and beautifully presented; staff were friendly and very helpful with the menu.5/18/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat Vegan ExperienceThis was my first time eating here. The service was great. My dad informed the waitress it was very warm upstairs and she had the temperature adjusted immediately. Informed us of the specials and took the time to ask us about allergies to certain food which has never happened before. The food speaks for itself. My dad had tofu scramble and I wish I had ordered it that's how good it was. But then I tried a bite of my waffles and felt much better. Strawberry rhubarb crisp was a little disappointing because I expected an actual "crisp" but the oats were a more healthy choice and - when mixed with everything and a little ice cream - made the dessert superb. Wish the Green Goddess had more apple as I could barely taste it.5/18/2013 12:00:00 AMdeliciousI am not a vegetarian and I love this restaurant. The staff is friendly, attentive but not fussy. Sometimes vegan food all winds up tasting the same. Not here. The flavors nod to other cuisines, Morocco, India, Mexico, Jamaica but do not overwhelm the fresh ingredients. Each plate had a distinctive appearance.
I have been to this restaurant with regulars and was not treated any better than when I came with an online reservation and with people who did not know tempeh from seitan. Even on a Friday night our last hour reservation changes were accommodated graciously by the maitre d.5/17/2013 12:00:00 AMA Veggie OasisA great find in New York, which is diffuclt to find tasty healthy veggie food. I would bring my meat-eating friends here too
(except I live in London)
Will definitely return during my next visit to New York.5/17/2013 12:00:00 AMgood vegetarian findMy wife is suffering from acid reflux and is on a strict vegetarian no fat no acidic food diet.
I took her to Candle 79 for our wedding anniversary and it could not have been more successful.....5/16/2013 12:00:00 AMI recommended Candle 79 toI recommended Candle 79 to many friends until I started having a hard time getting a reservation myself! It is a wonderful place with wonderful food. What more can I say!5/15/2013 12:00:00 AMFantastic!Definitely one of the best restaurant in New York.5/15/2013 12:00:00 AMFood is GreatThe food at Candle 79 is delicious and the presentation is wonderful. The tables are very close together, however, and the noise level is high. Although the restaurant is in a prime location, I wish they would move to another, larger space on the UES.5/12/2013 12:00:00 AMFinally had a chance to eatFinally had a chance to eat at Candle 79 and was not disappointed at all. All four of us (2 vegans and 2 not) loved everything we ordered. I have used the cookbook a number of times but after eating there and enjoying it so much I made a terrific Mother's Day dinner using their recipes. Can't wait to go back.5/11/2013 12:00:00 AMNot the last time we dine hereWe went to candle 79 to try out a vegie restaurant. We are not vegetarian ourself, but wanted to give it a try. And I must say, that it was very good.
And the service was also very good, as the waitress made sure that I realised that I was ordering a raw food dish for Entre, just in case I was not aware, so I had a change to change my mind before, in case I was more interested in a hot Entre dish. Which I was, so I was very gratefull for this type of service.
I will recommend this place, and probably visit again next time im in NY and in the mood to visit this kind of restaurant.5/11/2013 12:00:00 AMMy first meatless dining experienceMy first meatless dining experience at such a spot like Candle 79.It was warm, relaxed and the staff with a smile made sure every time they came to the table.
Great wine list and for those, like my girl friend who may not drink
can find excellent nonalcoholic mixes.
We had an appetizer special and main as well and both were delicious... will be back to try something different next time to enjoy.5/10/2013 12:00:00 AMJust good foodI reserved dinner for two the other day and we had a real treat for our taste buds as we explored vegan food at Candle 79 on upper east side.5/10/2013 12:00:00 AMDinner with the girlsThe dinner was amazing. Everything was delicious. We were a little late for our reservation, but the hostess was very gracious about it and seated us immediately once my party arrived. Our waitress was patient and gave us the time we needed to get our thoughts organized. She was very helpful with the wine list and answered our many questions about the day's special items. Overall we had a great time at a great restaurant in a great atmosphere!5/8/2013 12:00:00 AMCandle 79 was a discoveryWe were looking for a place to take our vegetarian friends for a major-birthday dinner and googled our way to Candle 79. Though none of us is vegan (2 vegetarians and 2 omnivores), we were delighted by the delicious, imaginative and beautifully presented dishes and would come back just because the food and service were so good.5/5/2013 12:00:00 AMExcellent restaurant! New York!!5/5/2013 12:00:00 AMCarnivore no more...Candle 79 will make even the most rabid carnivore consider giving up meat. I had the bbq burger, which was one of the best, meat or no meat, I've had in a while. There is good reason this place is rated so highly in New York.5/4/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat food and menu selectionGreat food and menu selection ---service was ok-not great5/3/2013 12:00:00 AMawesomei am a vegan foodie and my husband is a vegetarian...we absolutely looove this place! every dish is super yummy...enjoy!5/3/2013 12:00:00 AMVegan heavenWe are vegans. This is our kind of place!! Imaginative preparations, nicely served by very nice people.4/30/2013 12:00:00 AM
