Diner Reviews
  • "We were a party of four and each had different main courses. We shared two appetizers and two desserts. Everything was perfect and tasty. We have been there before and will go again. We save them for special occassions."

  • "My girlfriend and I had a delicious dinner at Candle 79 before heading over to a broadway show. We enjoyed every morsal of food and took leftovers home! This is a place everyone must try, even non-vegans! I'm a vegetarian, but my gf is not, and she loved it too!!"

  • "I came here after getting married with my grandparents for lunch. The food here is amazing. Delicious and there is plenty to select. Fried Seitan on the sticks was brilliant! I must admit I found the place pretty cramped and dark. The service could have been better; they made many mistakes, such as bringing us tap water after ordering 2 mineral bottles and they weren't too patient with my grandfather who is no vegan and needed more help with the menu. I don't recommend coming here if you have a special occasion with a group."

  • "I chose the restuarant because I had been before a few times and loved the healthy, clean and delicious food in the lovely, peacful setting ~ with patient, knowledgeable and helpful staff. It was our monthly mother-daughter luncheon with our dear friends ~ another mother-daughter team. Well, long story short ~ after an amazing meal ~ on the way back to New Jersey ~ 'lets go again next month'!"

  • "Candle 79 is one of the best vegan restaurants I have ever eaten at. They make vegan food actually taste amazing. The food is fresh, the quality is undeniable and the taste is simply divine."

  • "I love the daily pasta by the chef. It's pretty good."

  • "Candle 79 is all about the vegan food, and with freshness and care of preparation, that part of the experience met every expectation. My wife had a 'raw' dinner, that was simply ethereal. The house made ginger ale was the perfect beverage. Desert soared. Even the espresso was terrific. We drove from Philadelphia for a honeymoon dinner, and called ahead because heavy traffic meant we would be late. The host rearranged our reservations, and made sure we were not disappointed. Go. Go often. Eat well!"

  • "I liked the cocktails, but they were overpriced. The appetizers were good (had the cornmeal poppers and guac). The entrees were gross - I can't believe I paid $23 for the signature dish (seitan with creamed spinach and potatoes). It tasted like lemon and was mushy. The other diners with me tried different dishes and they were also not good. I've been to some tasty vegan places and sadly this was not one of them. I dont understand all the hype around this place. I will say that the staff was very friendly and service was great."

  • "My girlfriend's mom was visiting NYC and we wanted to take her to a high-end vegan restaurant to show her what it's all about. We were sorely disappointed. What was really poor was the service. Our waitress was a small African American girl with short curly hair. It was clear we were being forgotten about in favor of the downstairs patrons. We were starving and nobody approached the table for a good 20 min. We decided what we wanted and when she came to the table she told us the specials and took off, not letting us tell her we were ready. It was nearly 1 hr before we finally got some food. She seemed poorly suited for the role of waitress, she was socially awkward and didn't engage with us at all. At the end she didn't even thank us."

  • "Came here with two friends. I'm vegan; they're not. We ordered 4 appetizers: cornmeal poppers, seitan chimichurri, lobster mushroom ravioli, ramps/fiddlehead fern special. Each was extraordinary and delicious in ingredient combinations, presentation and flavor. My favorite was the seitan chimichurri. I wished there had been more of the jalapeño aioli served alongside the poppers. We ordered three salads: the kale/lentil/avocado, the seaweed, and the beet/watermelon. My fav was the kale--the dressing in particular was outstanding. We split the seitan piccata entree and that was the least interesting part of dinner. For dessert: trio of sorbets and the chocolate/peanut butter/caramel thingie. Cocktails were memorable! Service was excellent!"

  • "I've been planning my NYC trek from LA for months now and the one thing I looked forward to most? Celebrating here with my new husband and daughter(s as I'm also pregnant). We are here two years ago... Not once but twice, and even had our chef cater our wedding with a version of the famous lemon caper piccata because my husband and I loved it so much. I chose the dish again, my husband had the special & daughter had the nachos. However, I was severely disappointed this time around. The food just wasn't up to par like I remember it being... The dessert, however, was decadent and devoured in 19 minutes by us - we had the Mexican chocolate brownie. I may try this place out one more time next visit but it will be the last on my list."

  • "Delicious, complex dishes that would please the palate of even a non vegan or vegetarian. Lovely service, attractive setting."

  • "At this restaurant, they perform almost impossible vegan tasks such as a crepe, muffins, waffles and pancakes. All were excellent. They even fake sour cream and I am a lacto vegetarian. I like milk products but didn't miss them in this brunch. The brunch menu is small. One of the entrees was a crepe with fiddlehead ferns, artichokes, etc. All grilled. Really a fantastic place."

  • "Delicious inventive vegan food. My dish included a "cheese" that was the most delicious thing I have tasted since I have not eaten milk products in the last 30 years."

  • "Very disappointing. Went here for dinner in March and it was delicious. Went back for my son's birthday for brunch. My son has celiacs disease and we are very happy that they have a full gluten free menu but the brunch menu for gluten free as well as the regular menu was not only limited but not very well prepared. Two of us had the waffles which were hard as a rock and not very flavorful. It is extremely expensive for what we got and the service was very slow on top of everything else. We will not be returning any time soon."

  • "I live in Mesa, Arizona. I bought the Candle 79 cookbook a few years ago and was excited to actually eat at the restaurant on a recent trip to New York. The food exceeded my expectations! The flavor and presentation were outstanding and my friend (who is not a vegan) and I enjoyed every minute of our meal."

  • "The vegan community speaks reverently about Candle 79. I was very excited to eat at this 'classic'. Sadly our meal, which ended up at $120 for 2 people, was fairly disappointing. Our appetizer - ravioli - was the highlight of the meal. It was fantastic. It should be a main dish. Both of our main dishes were terrible with the exception of a few details. The jerk seitan had a very poor excuse for jerk seasoning. The sauce on the seitan was overpowering and unappetizing. The fricassee lacked substance, was uninspired and boring. It felt like more of an appetizer than a main dish. I would not recommend it even as a first course. Dessert was good. We had a brownie and ice cream. We had no complaints about it."

  • "The menu looked amazing as I was waiting outside for a friend. The host was very friendly and helpful, even though the place was packed. A short wait later, we were at the table. We waited a long time for water, even longer for drinks, and an eternity for food. If we hadn't ordered everything together, we would have been there for hours. The food was not that great. The miso dressing on the salad was very good, but overall, the rest of the food was overpriced and had no special qualities -- other than being green."

  • "Lipsmackingly delicious, my girlfriends and I had a wonderful meal at Candle 79. We shared everything and loved each dish. We were raving about it for days afterwards. If all vegan food was this delicious - everyone would be eating a plant based diet. Thank you for a lovely time :)"

  • "We were a mixed group of veteran vegetarians and confirmed carnivores - visitors and New Yorkers. All agreed the food was inventive and unlike anything anyone had eaten before. The food was clearly of top nutritional quality and full of imagination. Of our savoury orders (Seitan Chimichurri, Vegetable Napoleon, spinach ravioli, portobello steak, artichoke salad and seitan picatta, the chimichurri app scored highest. Of the others, overall very tasty and the only downsides were the near-raw cauliflower with the p/bello steak, very salty salad, and a slightly bland sauce for the picatta. Desserts were sublime. Cocktails, alcoholic and non, were excellent. The menu is wonderful and will encourage people to return to experiment."

  • "I am not a vegan, I just love good, fresh food. I have eaten here many times and each time I go I know that I will have a great meal, wonderful service in a lovely setting. I have brought many people and it never fails to impress."

  • "Took a vegan friend of mine out to dinner here during my stay in New York. The ambiance is very chill and unassuming, yet classy. People wore clothes as casual as T shirt and shorts, while others wore more business casual attire - no one seemed to care either way, which was cool. I made a reservation for dinner on Sunday night of Father's Day, but when I walked in it was clear that I didn't need one. Might have just been a Father's Day anomaly though. My friend and I split three dishes, two apps and an entrée. The seitan picatta was the best thing we had. Delicious. Steamed seitan dumplings were very good as well. Neither of us was a big fan of the live cheese plate, but it wasn't terrible as vegan cheese attempts often can be.Will beback"

  • "We really enjoyed our meal here, and didn't miss meat one bit! The waiters were knowledgeable and friendly and the food was both tasty and nice to look at. A great place to visit!"

  • "I am not a vegetarian by any means but love good food with great veggies, however, my husband and daughter are, so we went for Father's Day. I was blown away at the level of creativity that went into the meals. I did not miss eating meat at dinner and ate everything and wanted more. Can't wait to go back to sample more stuff. Unfortunately, for me, I would need a chef to become a vegetarian which is probably why most people don't. Drinks were also great. I had the brownie and ice cream for desserts which was also awesome. Great food-worthy of the price. Great views upstairs by windows. Close to Central Park for digestive and/or romantic stroll after dinner. Place is very clean and food extremely fresh with great tasting flavors."

  • "While we have been to numerous vegan and vegetarian restaurants, this one was more mediocre than most. We went for brunch and the items sounded interesting, but most were only modestly tasty. They would benefit from a bit more spicing on virtually all items. The highlight was the little banana muffins served before the meal - delicious."

  • "Best service I've ever had, honest recommendations and incredibly friendly and caring staff. Food was great, best thing was the ravioli appetizer. Dessert was great too!! Got the peanut butter chocolate one mmmm. Great drinks, wonderful time!!"

  • "This is one of our favorite restaurants in all of NYC. When our son from LA, comes to visit we always go to Candle79. He and we are not Vegans, but we are quite health conscious, and love it that healthy food can be prepared in such a delicious way. We recommend wheatballs, spinach ravioli, breaded artichoke hearts, the cheese plate. We ordered the hummus plate also For dessert my husband had a (to die for) blueberry cake with crunchy bottom and vanilla ice cream. My son and I shared their wickedly wonderful Mexican chocolate dessert (beyond to die for) Service is always excellent. We sat in a particularly beautiful location, on the second floor, near a gorgeous flower arrangement that went from the window sill to the ceiling."

  • "Candle 79 has never dissapointed me in it's wonderful atmosphere and exquisite food! I have come here on numerous occasions and have always left feeling satisfied and happy. Not only is the food terrific but the staff are the most accommodating and kind of any restaurant I have ever been to. I applaud Candle 79 on being such a perfect restaurant for so many different special occasions, I can not wait to return!"

  • "Me and my boyfriend had a great dinner here, absolutely the highlight of our visit to New York. As vegans it is always extremely satisfying to eat food that is not just fitting in our diet, but also taste great. Very fulfilling. High scale food in a nice, welcoming atmosphere, worth the price."

  • "My wife and I found this restaurant to be a true gem. The wait staff was extremely helpful with our gluten free diet and offered several selection from their GF menu. The bar had GF beer as well. The food was an absolutely wonder as my wife is vegan and I am a meat eater. The food was a definite pleasure and did not make me miss meat at all. We were seated by the front window and found it to be a pleasure to have the window open while eating. Overall, an excellent find and will definitely be back for numerous visits in the future."
