Candle 79The best VEGAN ever!!But even if you are a carnivore, you must go. The food is so good - try it!5/19/2013 12:00:00 AMI recommended Candle 79 toI recommended Candle 79 to many friends until I started having a hard time getting a reservation myself! It is a wonderful place with wonderful food. What more can I say!5/15/2013 12:00:00 AMFantastic!Definitely one of the best restaurant in New York.5/15/2013 12:00:00 AMFood is GreatThe food at Candle 79 is delicious and the presentation is wonderful. The tables are very close together, however, and the noise level is high. Although the restaurant is in a prime location, I wish they would move to another, larger space on the UES.5/12/2013 12:00:00 AMFinally had a chance to eatFinally had a chance to eat at Candle 79 and was not disappointed at all. All four of us (2 vegans and 2 not) loved everything we ordered. I have used the cookbook a number of times but after eating there and enjoying it so much I made a terrific Mother's Day dinner using their recipes. Can't wait to go back.5/11/2013 12:00:00 AMNot the last time we dine hereWe went to candle 79 to try out a vegie restaurant. We are not vegetarian ourself, but wanted to give it a try. And I must say, that it was very good.
And the service was also very good, as the waitress made sure that I realised that I was ordering a raw food dish for Entre, just in case I was not aware, so I had a change to change my mind before, in case I was more interested in a hot Entre dish. Which I was, so I was very gratefull for this type of service.
I will recommend this place, and probably visit again next time im in NY and in the mood to visit this kind of restaurant.5/11/2013 12:00:00 AMJust good foodI reserved dinner for two the other day and we had a real treat for our taste buds as we explored vegan food at Candle 79 on upper east side.5/10/2013 12:00:00 AMDinner with the girlsThe dinner was amazing. Everything was delicious. We were a little late for our reservation, but the hostess was very gracious about it and seated us immediately once my party arrived. Our waitress was patient and gave us the time we needed to get our thoughts organized. She was very helpful with the wine list and answered our many questions about the day's special items. Overall we had a great time at a great restaurant in a great atmosphere!5/8/2013 12:00:00 AMCandle 79 was a discoveryWe were looking for a place to take our vegetarian friends for a major-birthday dinner and googled our way to Candle 79. Though none of us is vegan (2 vegetarians and 2 omnivores), we were delighted by the delicious, imaginative and beautifully presented dishes and would come back just because the food and service were so good.5/5/2013 12:00:00 AMExcellent restaurant! New York!!5/5/2013 12:00:00 AMCarnivore no more...Candle 79 will make even the most rabid carnivore consider giving up meat. I had the bbq burger, which was one of the best, meat or no meat, I've had in a while. There is good reason this place is rated so highly in New York.5/4/2013 12:00:00 AMawesomei am a vegan foodie and my husband is a vegetarian...we absolutely looove this place! every dish is super yummy...enjoy!5/3/2013 12:00:00 AMVegan heavenWe are vegans. This is our kind of place!! Imaginative preparations, nicely served by very nice people.4/30/2013 12:00:00 AMOutstanding dining in NYCMy friend and I had dinner last week at Candle 79. Everything we had was outstanding, from beverages to dessert. I made a mistake with my reservation (we were late) so we ate at the bar. The bartenders were very knowledgable and friendly. I would highly recommend a visit.4/27/2013 12:00:00 AMSuprising, outstanding...We visited Candle 79 with my boyfriend while visiting New York and as we usually have a very bad experience while finding a good vegetarian restaurants around the world we were very surprised here. The food was delicious, beautifully decorated and extra-ordinary!!! The service was nice and willing to explain where does particular ingredients come from, what it is. We chose specials of the day and it was not a mistake. Our over-all experience was outstanding. I would recommend it even the non-vegetarians - this is best opportunity to meet non-veg. food.4/27/2013 12:00:00 AMI was there for brunch withI was there for brunch with a couple girlfriends. We all ordered the prix fixe. The "Nuevos Rancheros" was fantastic and the brownie sundae dessert was decadent. The portion sizes were good -- I didn't feel like I would explode when I left. Service was perfect and it was quiet enough to have a conversation at our table.4/21/2013 12:00:00 AMVegan YummyAmong the tastiest restaurants in NY, it happens to be vegan.4/21/2013 12:00:00 AMAlways the best! Wish I couldAlways the best! Wish I could eat there every day!!4/21/2013 12:00:00 AMOne of the best vegan/vegetarianOne of the best vegan/vegetarian restaurants in the North East.4/18/2013 12:00:00 AMVery Nice!!We had a great time. The server was very helpful in recommending items from the menu. Service was professional and prompt. We ate before the theatre and told the sever of our time constraints, she was very tuned in to when we had to leave in order to get back to the theatre district. The food was excellent. We enjoyed Candle 79 the best of the four different vegan/vegetarian places we tried. I would highly recommend Candle 79 if you are looking for vegan/vegetarian food, I am not sure that meat eaters would be satisfied eating here. I will definitely return to Candle 79 the next time I am in NYC. IF you are from out of town, this place is a 2 block walk from the subway station, very easy access from Times Square via the subway.4/17/2013 12:00:00 AMgreatUnbelievable! Can't wait to go back.dont judge from outside.plain out.but, beautiful inside.4/16/2013 12:00:00 AMFine Dining for VegansThis is as good as vegan food gets! Just had my second dinner there and everything was delicious. My dining companions thought that the desserts were the best part of the meal.4/15/2013 12:00:00 AMVery Good Vegetarian FareMy sister and I only ordered four dishes: the special artichoke appetizer with peas, fava beans, pesto, morels etc. It was absolutely delicious except the artichoke had zero flavor, same for the morels.
I had the special mexican-style seitan with black beans, poblano and I forget what else. It was tasty. My sister's spring vegetables fricasee was nice, but unexceptional. The vegetable nori were great, and we got a good white wine to accompany all.
The dessert, as at most places, was too sweet--some fruit with sugary granola and a little ice cream. When will restaurants start making less sugary and fatty desserts?4/15/2013 12:00:00 AMHonestly, The best Vegan food, everAmazing food, which we've not found anywhere in the world before from a Vegan restaurant.4/15/2013 12:00:00 AMWe make a point of returningWe make a point of returning to Candle 79 every time we take a trip to New York City. Sometimes we discuss trying another restaurant, but then we think, why? For anyone who appreciates superb food, original recipes and a lovely ambiance, this restaurant is a classic, but for a long-time vegan, weary of being patronized in most restaurants, this place is paradise. Everything -- everything -- from the appetizers to the amazing cocktails to the gorgeous desserts, is delicious.4/14/2013 12:00:00 AMVEGAN IN NYCDelicious Vegan food in sophisticated yet casual setting4/13/2013 12:00:00 AMTook a while to get seatedTook a while to get seated but the service and food were so delicious!!4/11/2013 12:00:00 AMAll 6 of us greatly enjoyedAll 6 of us greatly enjoyed it. We are all vegetarian and/or kosher. It was a joy to be able to order anything on the menu and it was all good!!4/10/2013 12:00:00 AMreally excellent vegetarianreally excellent vegetarian restaurant. Much nicer ambiance than is usual in vegetarian restaurants and the food is extremely good and served in an appealing way. Highly recommended to all vegetarians I know.4/9/2013 12:00:00 AMAmazing food!Candle 79 is one of my "must visit" restaurants when I am in NYC. The food is amazing -- so full of flavor and arranged artfully. It is a vegan's paradise!4/7/2013 12:00:00 AMAWESOME VEGAN MEAL!!! I amAWESOME VEGAN MEAL!!! I am coming there EVERY trip to NYC.4/6/2013 12:00:00 AMOutstanding / one of a kind! Our favorite restaurant in New York. Incomparable! Creative combinations of nuanced flavors-- 'less is more' applies here! Unbelievable vegan cooking--thankfully, here you don't have the usual vegan dishes. Incredibly satisfying--even for non-vegans.4/5/2013 12:00:00 AMMilaThis place is absolutely amazing. Went for late dinner with my boyfriend who eats meat for breakfast, lunch and dinner and he said it was one of the best meals he had in a long time. We shared nori rolls and chimichurri (amazing!). I enjoyed a kale salad that was very tasty and refreshing and my bf went for chipolte-grilled seitan. Everything was extremely delicious and we will definitely go back for more.4/5/2013 12:00:00 AMThe Future of Dining OutWhen humanity has outgrown the ignorant conviction it can totally dominate Nature, exploit its resources without limits and eat all other living creatures, this will be the sort of place where civilized people meet to share food (when they are not preparing it themselves.) As for the food, it satisfies gourmet needs and even residual atavistic desires.4/4/2013 12:00:00 AMCandle 79 is a consistentlyCandle 79 is a consistently good experience, even though the menu is changed periodically. Do not expect to find substitutes for meat or fish, in terms of taste, but a fresh approach to "meatballs and spaghetti", as well as delicious, innovative salads.
The entrees can run on the small side sometimes, but they make up in flavor.4/4/2013 12:00:00 AMIkon for value eating andIkon for value eating and just for eating value....
just being there and ordering lifts the conversation at the table!
A gem! Thanks for making it so easy to get a reservation.
Sharon Patrick4/2/2013 12:00:00 AMVery good vegan restaurant.Very good vegan restaurant. I have been following candle 79 cook book. It is great to dine there. The upstars room was a little hot, we didn't order coffee or tea for dessert. The appetizer portion is big, I feel I could not finish the entree.4/2/2013 12:00:00 AMVegan or not - you will LOVE ITAmazing food!! Even for meat-eaters! A great Vegan Restaurant is often a difficult find. This one will make you glad you are there. Great wine list. Appetizers are amazing. My husband, the non Vegan has enjoyed all of his dinners here. We have eaten here 6 times in the past 9 months and have never been disappointed! Noise...we have never noticed. The is a small bar and it seems to be a place that patrons are coming to...you can even have a bite at the bar. I would make a reservation. There is also an upstairs! Waitstaff take their service seriously.3/31/2013 12:00:00 AMwonderful experience and Iwonderful experience and I will definitely be back.3/31/2013 12:00:00 AMMy son is vegan and wife andMy son is vegan and wife and daughter have celiacs. Candle 79 accommodated all of those limitations while also having something for me, a meat and wheat eater. Their food and cocktails are very tasty. You never feel out of place asking for ingredient lists, clarifications on the menu, etc.3/31/2013 12:00:00 AMCan't beat it!The food was fantastic as usual, and the service was impeccable. Everything my husband and I have ever tried there over the years has been consistently great. Hands down the best vegan restaurant, and not just in NYC.
Thank you, Candle 79!3/31/2013 12:00:00 AMNew FavoriteCandle 79 is a rare breed of restaurant, and I mean that in the best way. It is the only fine dining, organic, and vegan restaurant I have ever heard of. After eating there for the first time last week it became my favorite restaurant. I loved that the server asked about any allergies especially because I am gluten intolerant as well as a vegan. I could have scarfed down any item on the menu and loved it. Every time I come home to the city I will be eating at Candle 79. Yes, it's that delicious.3/29/2013 12:00:00 AMCandle 79 was a Mixed Bag!I come from Philadelphia and have been to Candle 79 almost everytime I am in New York. Some of the food is fantastic, and some of the food is average. First of all, we went to Candle 79 because it was my Birthday. I asked for a really good table, and they gave me a table right up front in the bar area that was right on top of some other diners. I asked for a better table upstairs. What they gave me was okay, but not special. I also think that if I go on my Birthday they can do some kind of special dessert for me.
The seitan Chimichiri was fantastic!!! The seitan stuffed dumplings was also delicious. The salad wasn't one of their best and I was quite disappointed with the seitan picatta. It was very bland. Dessert was ok. I will again.3/28/2013 12:00:00 AMIf I could I would dine atIf I could I would dine at this restaurant every day! We had a special dinner for my daughter's 17th Birthday as she's vegan, and we were so impressed with the quality of service and most of all their dishes! Amazing what they do with no animal products whatsoever. My daughter told me that she felt very liberated as she didn't have to worry about what to select as everything was 100% vegan. One tip - make your reservations ahead of time, this place is packed all the time!3/28/2013 12:00:00 AMThe "Coconut Crush" was awful! The "Coconut Crush" was awful! Steamed dumplings a little overcooked and fell apart. Both entrees were really good.3/27/2013 12:00:00 AMAn omnivore and a vegetarian raveWhen we arrived, half an hour before our reservation time, the staff was very friendly and we were seated promptly. We had a hard time deciding on appetizers and ordered two: the "Ramp & Morel Spinach Ravioli" and the "Guacamole Timbale." Both were delicious and we scraped off as much as we could from the plates. My entree was the "Moroccan Spiced Chickpea Cake," very savory, while my wife opted for an appetizer, the fried dumplings, as her main course. We were very happy with both. We had trouble selecting just one dessert and settled on the "Mexican Chocolate Brownie." It was unbelievable.
The staff, ambiance, and food made our first meal as a married couple an unforgettable one. We recommend it to anyone, vegetarian or not!3/27/2013 12:00:00 AMTop restaurant in ManhattanTrue vegan and organic! And without compromise but instead a chef that offers creative dishes.3/26/2013 12:00:00 AM
