Diner Reviews
  • "A vegan restaurant with a genuine interest in good food and wine. This is not only for vegans or health freaks but for anyone who appreciates good food that actually leaves you with a good feeling! We were a party of six with only three vegetarians and we all appreciated the meal, having difficulty choosing between everything and tasting each other's dishes. We were all amazed by the full savoury tastes and textures the dishes offered and ended up buying their cook book. The youngest child in our company didn't even seem to notice hat his meatballs were wheat balls .... The wine list and spirits were like the rest of the things on the menu organic and the staff were not only friendly but also knew a lot about how to combine food and wine."

  • "Who ever thought vegan could taste this good?! Even my carnivorous husband was sated! Loved everything- apps to desserts! Was our first visit to Candle 79. Definitely will not be our last."

  • "or uptown hippies! i am newly vegan and this restaurant has everything i have been missing when dining out at other vegan/vegetarian places. i wish there was one downtown, i would go all the time! the food was delicious and the music was a range of the smiths to classical, bringing the night to a quieter end. very special experience. delicious cocktails. five stars all the way."

  • "Surprising to find that the East Side Candle was not up to the standards that we enjoyed a few weeks earlier at the Broadway location. But, the Broadway Candle West was an outstanding dinner. And, perhaps it is asking too much for the Candle 79 HQ to meet the West side standard."

  • "The food was delicious as always! Great service! We were seated right away. Our server was very attentive and super friendly! She had a smile on her face the entire time that made you feel so welcoming. Bus boys immediately removed finished plates out of our way. Never have a complaint coming here! Service is always great, food is always divine, and servers always make everyone, vegan or non vegan, feel right at home with no hesitation to explain the menu options."

  • "Candle 79 is a delicious experience in taste, sound, space and caring service. I took one of my vegetarian staff to dinner to celebrate his accomplishments and we were blown away with the creativity and uniqueness of the offerings. I was especially delighted to find dishes with fiddleheads!"

  • "Had a 12n reservation, arrived at 11:58am and she wouldn't let me in. She just stood there watching the clock to turn to 12n. Them she was irritated that we wanted to sit on the ground floor and rolled here eyes at me when we requested. The food is good but all of it needed salt. Our waitress was sweet though."

  • "one of the best vegan restaurants I've been to..each ingredient had a distinct flavor. loved the fried dumplings and the chickpea crepe!"

  • "Did not offer the full range of vegetarian food, particularly fresh fruits and vegetables"

  • "The vegan food was delicious. We had the hummus cakes in a Moroccan style curry, for the main course and great appetizers . I was a bit unhappy about the Long Island Chardonnay which was bland and uninteresting, but the wine that followed was better. The main problem I had dining upstairs was the claustrophobic quarters eating against a wall with another table so close that our backs touched. I had a real issue with this because it affects your overall enjoyment if the food experience."

  • "My friend wanted to go for her birthday. What a great experience. We had a fabulous cocktail to start out meal. We had the mushroom appetizer. The flavor was so refined and wonderful. Even for people who think veggies are not for them should rethink this outlook. It was so delicious I will definitely be back!"

  • "Food was good but I prefer the candle café for lunch. There were not a lot of options and the black bean burger was boring. This is not a bad review because I've eaten at the café before and it was just so much better. I do recommend checking out both places and judge for yourself."

  • "Vegan food that stands on it's own. The chimi churri tasted better than any meat based chimi churri I have ever had."

  • "We ate at Candle 79 during the weekend lunch/brunch time. The salad of the day was spectacular - with fiddlehead fern, avocado, and a really nice, light dressing. I had the chickpea crepe (filled with veggies and tempeh) which was also delicious and perfectly seasoned. My husband, being an omnivore, opted for the barbecued "burger" and polenta fries. The fries were good but the burger, which i understand is very popular had a mushy texture that he did not appreciate. We were greeted at the door and seated upon arrival (a little early which we appreciated). Service was generally ok - a little distracted and uneven. Tables are very close together in the area where we were seated which made the experience less relaxing than it might have been."

  • "The food was awesome and creative. I had nut encrusted seitan - tasted like pork chop. And the vegetables included ramps - a West Virginia spring delicacy. I was in heaven. My wife had a different dish, was equally enamored, but I didn't hear a thing she said because I was talking about my food. Can't wait to return to the city and try something else on the Candle 79 menu."

  • "I chose this restaurant for a birthday celebration for my vegetarian daughter, and it came highly recommended. The tables were way too close together for my liking, however, this is NYC, and probably expected. I would highly recommend it for food, service, and location."

  • "The restaurant ambience and price suggests a fairly classy affair. The expense is unjustified by the quality and the quantity. The food was bland and the spicy from sticking a piece of jalapeno in the dish. Might be justified if the portions were bigger, but they aren't. We all left hungry and uninspired by the cooking. We tried to go with the house specialties that would taste more interesting but they left our pallette disappointed. The atmosphere was full of young adults talking loudly about the hookup culture at their respective campuses. Might be alright but we couldn't have a conversation at normal volume without competing with a table 3 away. Overall, I expected that for the price, we would have a far more memorable experience. `"

  • "Candle79 has created a menu for those VENTURING into vegetarian life- heavy use of faux meat & cheese. The dishes were almost consistently under-seasoned. The Fried onion rings with chipotle aioli were only as good as the heat allowed. Let them cool even a little and you'll notice the greasy under seasoned batter coating. We decided to take dessert to go - both of which melted into a separated mess that was inedible after just a quick cab ride. A good start, but not there yet, not for $100 pp."

  • "Have eaten here multiple times and always good. Service was not up to par this visit which is frustrating since we came with customers and this was their first visit. Will return and tables upstairs are always a bit quieter for a business meeting. The house made ginger ale is outstanding!"

  • "Being Italian and used to simple and healthy food, it has been a relief to have dinner at Candle 79. The food was very tasty and well served; the ambient nice and quite, with special vibrations. Surely different from the Vegan food we are used in Italy, we noticed the "American" attitude of using lots of ingriedents on a same dish!! But we recognize the results were tasty and nicely presented. Surely to be recomended to other vegan friends in NY!"

  • "We had a wonderful meal here. We went with vegans for a night out......we really had no idea what to order. Our waiter was very helpful and informative. We loved everything we tried. The nachos are outstanding !!!!! We had a great bottle of wine too ! The deserts were fabulous. Please make sure to try the cannoli. We would definitely go back ! Pricey......but worth it. A wonderful change for us !"

  • "I had read a lot of good things about this place and decided try it on my recent trip to New York. I was expecting something special, but got food that was no better than vegan food I've had in Dallas, just much more expensive. We had a reservation for 9:45, arrived early, but still had to wait until 10:15 to be seated. Both the food and service left something to be desired."

  • "A cook to the French royal family once argued that cooking was a greater art than music, dance, painting, or architecture because it engaged more senses than any of the others. Whether or not you agree with that criterion for aesthetic superiority, Candle79 certainly qualifies in providing an outstanding experience for all five windows on the soul. The braised fiddlehead ferns and shredded Brussels sprouts were both very good, but the black-eyed pea cake on curried kale and butternut squash in pomegranate sauce were nearly religious experiences. The only drawback is this place is too good for its own good, and packs customers into the typically small NYC walk-up space. I am most definitely going back next time I'm in the city."

  • "Our third time back at the restaurant, we forget how much we love the food until we are eating it. We will continue going back for our special occasions and would recommend it to anyone. If you haven't had vegan, this will be the perfect starting place for a nice meal. If you already love vegan food, then you will not be let down."

  • "I was delighted when the host led us to the most beautiful window seat in the upstairs dining room. The blood orange mimosas we ordered were delicious and the service was speedy and consistent. I've been to Candle 79 for dinner and it was good. So naturally, I wanted to try their brunch. I am sad to say I was extremely disappointed. We ordered the seitan appetizer, and it was good seitan, but lacked flavor and sauce. The Kale caesar was 75% seitan, 25% kale. So disappointing. French toast was rubbery. Best item was the veggie crepes. Wish they would focus more on fresh veggies than meat analogs. Bill was $100 before tip. For that kind of $$ there are way better options in the city."
