A word from Cana SF
Caña San Francisco is an upscale, full-service Cuban restaurant in the Potrero Hill/ Mission District.

Our concept is derived from classic Cuban-inspired delicacies in conjunction with locally grown and sourced products to bring you both authentic and modern Cuban cuisine. We view food as a vital part of our Cuban heritage and as with all expressions of our culture, innovation, creativity, and invention serve as an engine to move forward...

In this way, we are authoring a modern Cuban cuisine.

Our mixology involves the use of real “Caña,” that is, crushing our own sugar cane to produce syrups, glazes and tinctures in order to provide you with the best cocktails this side of the Caribbean.

We place special emphasis on creating a novel cocktailing environment in the Great Cuban Tradition of Rum-based bartending, along with a menu that is sure to take you to the heart of La Habana and beyond.

It would have been a great night out if I was planning to go dancing - but we were out for a quiet dinner. No such luck at Cana on a Sunday night. Didn't even stay long enough for a drink - the music was so loud you couldn't hear anything or order anything.

  • Not a pleasant evening!

We were on vacation and was looking forward to a nice evening. Service started off fine then went downhill real quick! Beer list was short then 2 of the 6 (or 7) where not available so we had to settle for a third choice. My daughter then ordered the Cuban soda and it was also not available so she asked for water instead. The waiter forgot about the water so we asked the bus boy to get it for us. The bus boy was the only reliable server; we never saw our waiter until the end of the night. Food was mediocre; it was pretentious and over-priced Cuban food served in small portions, not authentic or real as the ones in South Beach! We won't be dining here again. Our evening was spoiled.

My friend and I really liked Cana's atmosphere -- sort of an airy industrial space with fairy lights -- and the fantastic noveau Cuban food, and were excited about hearing/dancing to live music. Overall, we still had a nice time, but the service was sadly lacking and they finally informed us that, contrary to the chalkboard outside, there was no live music. We tried several appetizers and entrees, all of which were delicious. The fun was diminished, alas, by our long long waits for water, drinks, taking our order, removing plates, etc. even though it wasn't busy and the waiters were standing around chatting. I'd like to return for the good food, but will hesitate to suggest it for a group unless the service improves to standard levels.

First and foremost, delicious food. The other stuff, authentic atmosphere, great service, was bonus. We were lucky enough to experience the place before the live music started and after, quiet and louder, and both were great. Our table was right next to the band, so it got difficult to talk, but we did very much enjoy the music as well. Make sure to make reservations in advance! The place gets filled up fast.

I took my partner to Cana for his birthday and he is Cuban. We were eleven people and the staff treated us extremely well, great service. The food was exceptional and the design and layout of the restaurant well above average. We went on a Saturday night and there was a live band. We really enjoyed the live music, but my only small criticism is that it was practically impossible to talk when the band was playing. Fortunately, the band only played for about 45 minutes, so the rest of the evening was quite enjoyable and the music did allow some of us to get up and dance. Thank you Cana for a great birthday party!

We enjoyed a wonderful Sunday brunch at Cana SF. First, the room is amazing. Bright and airy....so inviting. Second, the service was impeccable...so warm and friendly. Finally, the food was absolutely delicious....flavorful and exciting. Others commented on "cash only"...no big deal...we brought cash. Food prices were very reasonable. Drinks...I think the bloody mary is too expensive but life goes on. We can't wait to go back...not only to eat but to join in on the Sunday Cuban music and dance party!

this restaurant is just what sf has been missing. the food is great, love the atmosphere, but most of all, it draws a relaxed diverse crowd. no hipsters in sight. this is a place in the mission where you can eat if you are over 30 and feel comfortable. the space is large enough for kids and adults to enjoy meals together. i have eaten there for a romantic valentines dinner, with a large group of friends and for delicious fun brunch on sunday. there is live music to fit the meal and on sunday afternoon they have dancing and a dj. the bar has great drinks. i can walk there from my house but i wouldnt hesitate to drive across town to eat there if i had to.

the reviews on yelp were mixed. So we were pleasantly surprised by the wonderful, fresh food and the fantastic service. What more is there to say? We live very close by so we will definitely go there often. And who knew they had a full bar? We ordered the burger and the fish of the day and were both very happy with our choices. That burger was phenomenal actually. The beet salad was generous and very tasty. And our waitress provided wonderful service. We are hoping that this restaurant continues to be a success because we want to continue going to it. So go now!

We came for a friend's bday/going away party. Group of 8 of us. Sunday is their day for dancing. The music was great for giving high energetic feel but was also a little too loud to enjoy plain conversation. Looking over the balcony at the dancers was alot of fun. Our server, Danielle, was great. The sweet plaintains with honey butter were the best thing we ate there. I was addicted to them!! Great drinks too!

I had read the reviews that the service was spotty, so I was expecting it, but it was pretty bad. We had a reservation and although there were several 4 tops set and ready, the hostess told us to take a seat because they were still getting our table ready. After waiting about 7 minutes we finally got seated. The waiter was very friendly and personable, but just wasn't on top of things. He said he would be with us shortly, and we waited nearly 10 minutes to order drinks (we still hadn't gotten water either). We ordered food & drinks together, and my drink came out first (a very bad bloody mary), then all of our food came out yet no one else had their drinks yet! Music was also way too loud. Not possible to carry on normal conversation.

The food was delicious as expected. I've been here before during slow hours so got very attentive service. On my last visit however, the quality of service started optimistically with the hostess supporting my main server who had his hands full with too many tables. There appeared to be only two servers for this bi-level restaurant, so they were probably under staffed. The support fell off after appetizers were delivered. They forgot to bring out the first order of drinks, glasses for the bottle of water, did not check up to see if the food or beverages were to our liking. VERY long wait for entrees which tasted average. It tasted rushed. Couldn't flag our server down for anything, especially the check. In a rush to leave. Disappointing.

Waited 30 minutes for drinks and about an hour and 15 minutes for food. We were only 1 ffour top out of 5 tables. And half of our orders were incorrect. Sevrer argued over menu insisting things listed as a component of a dish were not included. When we arrived, we were looking forward to live music and were disappointed to find there wouldn't be any music or dancing as advertised. We were also a bit miffed by the cash only requirement for such a spendy brunch ($50pp) When we left we just wished we had gone somewhere else. Cana really needs to find their rhythm.

We had a 7pm reservation on a Friday night. It was relatively quiet then and slowly picked up after that. The music was the perfect accompaniment to great food and great service. I had read all the previous reviews and was prepared for the worst (and I brought cash). Turns out my concerns were unwarranted and I brought barely enough cash even though I brought my own bottle of wine ($20 corkage). Mojitos then Tuna tartare, empenadas, quinoa/garbanzo stew, seafood special, and the bread pudding (yum) were all superb.

Cana was a delightful gem--the service was attentive but not intrusive, the food was flavorful and delicious, the music set a mellow yet festive atmosphere, and the mojitos were simple, crisp and refreshing. The space is open and well designed--great for groups. I cannot wait to return--especially to check out the brunch. I appreciated the kindness of the bartender when my date was stuck in traffic and I was sitting alone at the bar for 45 minutes. The staff was very attentiive and I cant say enough about the food and specialty drinks. There was nothing on the menu we ordered that was a bad dish. Having a live band that played authentic cuban music added to the atmospehere.I would have liked to seen the band play past 845pm...our res was at 8pm. I love the fact this restaurant is my hood and plan on many more dining expierences at Cana. Oh and Daniel the manager is fantastic !

Loved the live music, but it was very loud. There was a draft every time the door opened, so it was chilly. We don't eat pork, so the menu was very limited. The prices were high for the quality, and the wines were all high - especially since there are many wonderful Spanish wines that are quite inexpensive. It was okay, but not stellar.

There were definitely some kinks to work out because the restaurant is new - like the drinks taking 10-15 minutes to arrive from the bar. The hostess and waitstaff were very friendly (and apologetic about the wait for the drinks, which makes up for a lot in my book). Food was pretty good, but not amazing. My biggest critique is the "cash only" policy. I understand "cash only" at less expensive places, but for three of us, the bill was $200 with tip. I just happened to have the cash on me, but typically wouldn't. It was a business dinner, so I want to pay with credit card for tax purposes. Unless a place is amazing, I would rather pick among the hundreds of other great SF restaurants that take credit.

We went on Valentine ’s Day hoping to have a pleasant meal at a new restaurant. It appeared that no-one on the staff really wanted to be there. We arrived early to have a drink at the bar. It took over ten minutes to get service, the bar staff was not busy. We settled the bar tab and proceeded to our table. Again, it took over ten minutes to get served. We ordered (five course dinner) and received each course in an un-timely manner. We were never asked how our meal was, service was basically placing the plates on our table with no conversation. We received our tab which included drinks from the bar we already paid for and a 20% gratuity both of which I refused to pay for. Enjoyed the food but it is doubtful if we go back.

Cana was a last minute decision. It was Saturday night at 7pm and we had no plans. Never fear, Open Table pointed us to Cana SF. The restaurant is fairly new, which is the only reason I can see that it wasn't completely booked. The cuban food was great. We ate a bunch of small plates- ceviche, spare ribs, shredded pork sliders, empanadas were all delicious. The drinks were even better. We had a spicy tequila cocktail that was super delicious. The mojito was good (refreshingly not too sweet) and the boys ended the night with a rum tasting. It was a bit loud for casual conversation, but there was a live band with music. People were dancing and having a great time. They do take cash only, which is a bit of a pain.
