A word from Cana SF
Caña San Francisco is an upscale, full-service Cuban restaurant in the Potrero Hill/ Mission District.

Our concept is derived from classic Cuban-inspired delicacies in conjunction with locally grown and sourced products to bring you both authentic and modern Cuban cuisine. We view food as a vital part of our Cuban heritage and as with all expressions of our culture, innovation, creativity, and invention serve as an engine to move forward...

In this way, we are authoring a modern Cuban cuisine.

Our mixology involves the use of real “Caña,” that is, crushing our own sugar cane to produce syrups, glazes and tinctures in order to provide you with the best cocktails this side of the Caribbean.

We place special emphasis on creating a novel cocktailing environment in the Great Cuban Tradition of Rum-based bartending, along with a menu that is sure to take you to the heart of La Habana and beyond.

Diner Reviews
  • "Went for brunch with a friend, and we ordered the Cuban Sandwich and the Flank Steak sandwich to split. They were decent, but not particularly impressive taste wise. The waiter did bring us a complimentary plate of plantains with some delicious sweet cream/frosting, which was excellent. Overall, not somewhere I would be in a hurry to visit again."

  • "The food was overall just fine. Service was nice, very accommodating. However, incredibly over priced and live band added to the noisy atmosphere as did the two large televisions we were not expecting."

  • "Vibe on weekday nights very relaxed and pleasant. Great happy hour mojitos! Happy hour food list a bit heavy on the fried side, but if mixed with items from the main menu a great option in this area."

  • "there was a large party - it was SO VERY NOISY, SO LOUD. crowed but that would have been ok, just too loud. I know the food to be good, we were disappointed."

  • "Great find! Intimate setting, fun date night spot! Had a live band and a great ambiance!! We loved the food too"

  • "Food was delicious except for rice pudding. Live music was fabo, but loud. Brought all courses at same time! Out of coffee. I'd go back and would recommend to others."

  • "I recommend the caña in Oakland instead. Better food, better ambiance, more intimate and lower prices."

  • "We enjoyed a wonderful brunch at Cana SF last Sunday. It is the second time we have been there and do plan to return. Some people have commented that the food is bland. It is not, it is Cuban so the flavors are different and perhaps a bit subtle...but delicious. The only negative was the service. We got off to a very slow start...took about 20 minutes just to get our drinks. They seemed to fall into step after that but one thing is clear....don't go if you are in a hurry. However, on the positive side, the servers were friendly and gracious. Again, we look forward to returning."

  • "We only had time for a quick snack, but everything was great from the service, to the food to the feel of the place. Not to mention an excellent rum cocktail and fabulous chicken/olive empananda."

  • "I thought I had made a DINNER reservation only to arrive at the restaurant which had been turned into a DANCE CLUB for the evening. The doorman told me that this is the case EVERY Sunday night. I was very unhappy that I had to scramble to find another open restaurant in the area (I had theater tickets). The restaurant should indicate on OpenTable that there is no dinner on Sundays."

  • "My husband and I just went back to Cana for a second visit. We ordered two of the three flat bread options to start. The flavor of each was great and the crust thin and appropriately crispy. Our entrees, vegetarian stew for one of us and slow cooked pork over mashed potatoes for the other, were wonderful, too. About halfway through our early dinner, a Cuban band set up and started to play top notch music. They deserved a bigger crowd than had arrived so far. A note about the flat bread: the menu lists flatbread as a side for $3. When our check arrived, we were charged $10 for one and $11 for the other, a price much more in keeping with the worth of the dish, so we weren't upset. Just be aware."

  • "went on a Sunday evening at 6 pm for my niece's birthday. Did not realize that this is a dance club, with music at decibel levels unheard of (and I loved Ramones concerts). The waitress could not communicate with us so we tried pointing. Got the wrong things because there was no communication. During our occasional 30 second breaks between songs we would smile and say hi - and then eat. As quickly as we could. Have no idea if the food was good, our goal was to get out. We would have left before ordering except that it was a Sunday night, we were in multiple cars and the area didn't seem to have other places to eat. Waitress knew not to ask if we wanted dessert - we paid quickly and ate cupcakes standing outside in the cold."

  • "Great service. Food was very good. Was a cold night in SF and the place was freezing though. Need to add some heaters to the restaurant on those cold nights."

  • "There were 6 of us, and those of us who had the pork dish were extremely happy. My beet salad was wonderful. The live music was excellent but not appropriate volume for dining. You could not talk unless they were on break. Even the server had to ask "what?" a frustrating amount of times. They play from 7-9. plan your meal accordingly. If you want to dance, many people do, and the crowd was very friendly."

  • "Visited Cana for the first time this past Saturday 11/23 to celebrate my birthday. The hostest was nice but that's about it. The drinks and food took a really long time, the live music was super loud, the food was edible -- but not the best. We left hungry. At the end, we got our check dropped on the table without asking if we would like anything else. We paid our bill, left and went somewhere else."

  • "as in restaurants. Went with a small group for a birthday lunch, and one of the guys is Puerto Rican and highly critical of the paucity of good Cuban restaurants in the area. We had a great time. The service was totally solicitous, warm and friendly; he was impressed w/their rum selection; and all the food was delicious, including the vegetarian option. A large group was there for what appeared to be a wedding shower, and the big room was perfect. Will return for sure."

  • "Our 4 person drink and dinner tab was around $250 andI left hungry. Don't serve $16-22 vegetarian entrees that are child portions. Plus our server was missing in action most of the time."

  • "Great menu, very good food, lots of choices. Service was OK - waiter appeared inexperienced but attentive. Veggie main was tasty if sparse. Festive atmosphere. Worth checking out."

  • "Pro's: I'm from South Florida & hadn't found a good cuban place until now. Their mojitos are fantastic, a stellar selection of rum, & the food is super tasty, too! I've eaten here 3x in the past month and plan to return again. Daniel, the manager, was very helpful & their loft is fun for private events. Con's: The service tries hard, but they're only so-so. Long wait for the food. Also, they have a tendency to close their kitchen earlier than their stated hours. When they have a dj/band the noise is ridiculously loud. However, when they don't have the band/dj the sound level is fine. Overall, definitely worth supporting. They also partner with the Royce Gallery down the street- so if you see a show there you can get 1/2 price flatbread!"

  • "The food at this restaurant is well made. excellent!.... Yet only two persons serving the tables, not enough. Therefore, there can be a bit of a wait. Music was TOO LOUD!...We could hardly carry a conversation. What it counts the food, I would go back the day there is no music playing. Cana is a little Gem. Salud!"

  • "Carefully crafted mojitos and excellent live music are only part of argument for making Caña a priority destination: the ropa vieja (shreeded beef with black beans and rice mashed up) garnished with tostones (fried plantain chips), yucca fries and delicious black bean soup round out this caribbean experience."

  • "We went here prior to a seeing a theatre show at Z-space, and had a great experience. Specialty cocktails were great, and the small plate selection was wonderful. Try the chorizo flatbread and coconut mojito."

  • "We arrived on a Sunday night. They were playing music and there was dancing going on, so we were seated upstairs. It was *really* loud. The server was great and explained they were new and hadn't worked out the operations really well. Food came before the drinks....but our server nicely comped us a couple of shots of rum until the cocktails arrived. Food is quite good, and drinks are good but overpriced. I'll go back in a few months, once they've figure out their operations."

  • "I expected a lot--I've heard great things about this restaurant group, however, service was slow and inattentive--especially considering there was hardly anyone in there on a Friday night. Food was relatively good, but entrees were somewhat one note and on the sweet side. Cooks behaved like amateurs, sending out entrees one at a time instead of timing everything to come out at once. Unlikely to return..."

  • "Great food. Live band and DJ music was very loud. I sat upstairs which cut down on the noise level but it was right over the ovens and so was pretty warm. But great food!"

  • "The ambiance was fairly nice with live music, although at 7:00 on a Saturday night it was quite empty. The food was dissappointing. Being a native of Miami, I know good Cuban food and this was off the mark. It tasted a bit "dumbed down" to a non-Latin palette. If there are real Cuban's running this place, they need to boldly embrace their roots and give us real Cuban spice!! Having said that, they did make a good mojito."

  • "My appetizers were delicious and well presented. My husband's bean soup was fair - edible but nothing special.. The entrees were poorly presented and uninteresting. The pork dish Cuba is noted for had none of the crisp skin. The skirt steak was just stewed meat. The rice dessert was good but nothing special. The service was horrible. Asked twice for water, twice for salt, and couldn't get the dessert and bill. We got up twice and walked over to the waiter requesting both. (We were going to the theater and had to leave.) We spent almost two hours there. We will not return."
