A word from Camino
After working at Chez Panisse for over 20 years, Russell Moore opened this warm and rustic restaurant in the Grand Lake area of Oakland. Inspired by traditional home cooking in France, Italy and Spain most of the dishes served at the restaurant are cooked at the restaurant’s prominent fireplace or wood burning oven. A small, decisive, daily changing menu reflects the seasons, the region and the restaurant’s commitment to small farms. Camino offers a specialized cocktail menu using the same carefully sourced ingredients as the kitchen.

  • The best dungeness crab of my life.
    Manicmainah
    Dined on 11/19/2014
Dungeness crab roasted with black pepper in the wood fire, perfumed with hints of fennel and coriander. To die for! Each dish so inventive -- not through trickery of technique, but with an artist's understanding of the colors of flavors and textures. Because of the open-flame cooking techniques, the food is enhanced with spices, not herbs--which wouldn't hold up to the heat. The result is food of much deeper complexity than average American cuisine. I ate one of the best meals of my life here. I will never forget it! Run, don't walk, to Camino!

  • snap up crabby monday!

    Dined on 11/17/2014
The prix fixe menu for Crabby Monday snapped us up! Crab broth (essence of crab!), roasted crab with salad, faro, yacon and garlic mayo, and for dessert, roasted pear with burnt nut ice cream - what's not to love?? The main event is not to be missed. The crab is coated in herb mix before roasting in the fire, and the combination of salty and herby goodness with the smoky roasty flavor is good enough to overcome my serious reluctance to dig in to a whole crab (usually not worth the effort). The salad was a perfectly dressed handful of tender red and green lettuces, and the garlic mayo was perfect with the crab (any leftover was swept up by bread - too good to be left on the plate). If you love crab, go! (BTW, we had the sparkling wine cocktail with the crab and it proved a very refreshing citrus-y foil, maybe better than the recommended wine - try it!)

  • Fave Oakland restaurant EVER
    OpenTable Diner Since 2012
    Dined on 11/17/2014
Freshest ingredients possible. Chef came from Chez Panisse (need we say more?). Most things cooked on open wood fire. Farro, for instance, is ordered fresh from a specialty grain co., and the taste and texture are mind-blowing. Everything I've had at Camino has been almost a religious experience gastronomically. Even before the food arrives, you notice the care put into the overall ambience: the space is a cross between Knights of the Round Table, a sacred church, and a restored Crafstman bungalow. The bread, butter and salt combo served on request, especially with one of their herb tisanes: that combo right there is astonishing. Interesting background music (one night I heard Johnny Cash covering Neil Young). Sit close to the open wood fire kitchen if you can, so you can watch the food preparation. Wonderful dinner every time, start to finish. Of note: Crabby Mondays. Oakland has finally arrived on the food scene.

Perhaps because it was Monday and crab night, the menu was extremely limited - something we didn't anticipate. You could have crab or crab (which would require a lot of work) - or possibly pork - which I had, feeling lazy, and it was good. I like a smallish menu of great food, but this was well on the other side of smallish. The service was nice and the space is really beautiful, but I can't really recommend it - at least not for a Monday night dinner.

I thought the food quality was great but the portion size was a bit small considering the cost. $28 for a single sausage with some grilled pork was a bit much. 2 drinks and 2 glasses of wine 2 salads and 2 entrees at $160 out the door. No bar seating so the restaurant was missing that festive feel.

My dining partner and I were treated to a unique experience. From the style of cooking to the freshness of each dish, we were fascinated by Camino's approach to making good, fresh food. The staff graciously answered our questions and invited us to look at their process in the open kitchen. Many thanks to them.

The food here is really good but it is a really big space which makes it not feel intimate or cozy which the food implies it should be. The large scale also shows how empty it was on a Wed at 8p. So the ambiance lacked a little

The menu is very stark with few items and very small servings. When I asked for the head and tail to be taken from my fish, it was, but all of the bones were left on my plate leaving too much work for the effort. The burnt ice cream tasted just like you would expect...burnt.

We've been here three or four times now, and every meal as been impeccable. The service this time was fabulous. We've cleared each and every plate on all our visits. The menu is always so creative, and because there is a limited selection, I end up ordering something that I otherwise would never try and my palate is so pleasantly surprised. LOVE IT! Maybe my favorite special occasion restaurant now.

We came here with a group of six. There were only three choices for main entrees so many of us opted for two small plates. The service was very slow even though the restaurant was not full. The pork entree meal was served hot, but given the time it took to get food we didn't send them back. The food is interesting, but the lack of choice certainly limits the desirability of Camino. With such a small menu, the attention to every detail is critical.

We happened to be at Camino for one of their Oktoberfest Monday dinners and opted for the German-style prix fixe menu. We had a cold beet & sauerkraut soup; grilled duck sausage and quail with spaetzle and a pretzel; and a dessert of sorbet and ice milk with an apple syrup. Everything was delicious. The room is lovely, the service was great, and the drinks were perfect. We live in SF and it was worth totally driving to Oakland just for this dinner.

Camino was an amazing dining experience. From the beginning, the hostess was so welcoming. Our waiter was incredible, she know so much about all the dishes as well as the history of the resturant. The decor is so beautiful. It's so simple, yet every detail has been thought out. The food was very tasty. Though you have a limited menu, it is all very savory. I'm not a fan of Duck, however, one of my guests ordered duck and I had a taste...it was the best duck I have ever tasted...juicy, tender, and it was not greasy...which is what typically turns me off about duck. I wish the portions were a little larger (not too much), but aver all the experience was good.

It is the 3rd time I dine at Camino and my experience was almost blissful. It could easily warrant a 5 star status if it was not for the small portions... and I have a small appetite! I had a thin slice of ricotta with a tablespoon of ratatouille for $12 as an appetizer, followed by a fish stew that barely had 1oz of fish for $15. Aside from that, the food is prepared with quality ingredients and care, the wine list is organic/biodynamic, the service is friendly and professional, and the atmosphere relaxed. Our dinner was close to perfection. My only complaint is that the dishes come in small portions for the price tag and leave you rather famished if you cannot have bread/gluten to supplement your meal with.

We have been to Camino 3 times in the last 60 days. Each time was a unique and pleasurable experience. We have tried many different and imaginative dishes there and enjoyed them all. Last experience was on Paella night. Three course fixed price meal which was very good. Great gazpacho, Paella was fish and sausage which was very tasty and nicely spiced, dessert was a sorbet - not notable. Other dishes that were great were the duck, squid pasta, and cucumber salad. Would highly recommend giving it a try.

Every meal we have at Camino seems to get better and better. From the delicious cocktails to wonderful wine selection. The meal was spectacular. Each course was outstanding. We had a full five course meal, including cheese and dessert. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, and made this special occasion absolutely perfect for us. From the cocktails at the bar as we waited for our table, to the duck liver and shallot toast and grilled duck wings, the delicious wine from the Russian River valley, to the burnt nut ice cream and cobbler with cold cream for dessert with accompanying small batch scotch, every bite and sip was delightful. Truly an amazing meal for a special occasion at our favorite restaurant. Thank you.

This review is for brunch. Camino is a good restaurant that could be much better. Everything, other than the excellent grilled pork sausages, was served lukewarm or cold. One of our entrees, poached eggs with farro and peppers, came lukewarm with one perfectly cooked poached egg and a second egg that was cooked through. The wood-oven baked eggs were very good, but also overcooked and lukewarm. The basket of grilled bread, which we expected would be warm, was stone cold. All of this was served in a room in which one wall was dominated by a wood-burning hearth, which created expectations of smokiness and warmth that was never delivered. Service was efficient, but not very warm.

With so few choices for a great breakfast in the entire Easy Bay, Camino is a gem. The only huge disappointment was the frittata. The waiter warned me that it was not a typical fluffy egg dish. Well, he was right. It was completely bizarre; like it was inappropriately named. It wasn't a frittata. It was vegetables on a plate with two pieces of a flatbread like substance on top. So please go but SKIP the frittata.

Bread or toast with cheese or other sides dish was ridiculously small (plate of condiments, that is...there was plenty of bread). French toast was good. Eggs were tasty but nothing special. Quail was tasty but a chore to eat given all the bones. Most dishes could use some salt. I'm surprised this place made the chronicle top 100 list. Super-long communal tables weren't great, but we managed to get all 4 of us at the end of a table, so it worked out okay. My friends hated the creepy pig masks on the wall. Please take them down. On the other hand, the service was great. Very friendly and knowledgable blonde tatooed waitress.

Heavenly: crunchy toast with herb jam and sheep's cheese (thinly sliced, to keep the balance and not overwhelm the herb jam) -- we had to order a second. The other dishes were excellent too -- tomato salad, delicately seasoned, eggplant on beet puree, mushrooms with potatoes. Only the sea bass disappointed a little as the fish was a little dry, but only marginally. Service was great too -- attentive but non-intrusive, efficient, and very genuine/sincere somehow. We took our time, and nobody hurried us at all. Recommend utterly.

Camino's food preparation is quite good, except that the grilled corn ordered by two of our group was not soft as they would have liked it instead it was "tough" but my main complaint is that the menu selection is too slim. On our visit no red meat or pork. One of our group is a fan of them. All in all not grabbing enough to return. As for wine... slim list too and way heavy mark up. A Sicilian wine of very good quality was twice the price of the same wine at my local wine shop.

The service was good, everyone was attentive, friendly and knowledgeable. There wasn't much vegetarian on the menu, so I ordered the eggplant gratin, expecting it to be all heavy with cheese or something. It wasn't; it was much better than that. Very flavorful, and the wild nettles were perfectly cooked and seasoned. My wife had the roasted chicken and enjoyed it very much. I also had a rum cocktail that was pretty amazing. We really liked everything except the dessert list; more chocolate options would be appreciated.
