A word from Camino

After working at Chez Panisse for over 20 years, Russell Moore opened this warm and rustic restaurant in the Grand Lake area of Oakland. Inspired by traditional home cooking in France, Italy and Spain most of the dishes served at the restaurant are cooked at the restaurant’s prominent fireplace or… wood burning oven. A small, decisive, daily changing menu reflects the seasons, the region and the restaurant’s commitment to small farms. "This place has a warm, cozy feel. Most seating is at common tables, but you still feel like you have privacy. We were a party of 6 with one infant, who was accommodated nicely. We went for brunch, and tried almost every dish on the menu to share. Order the grilled bread & condiment plate to start - they're terrific! The grilled cider-cured ham with asparagus, parsley root & horseradish and the homemade doughnuts were huge hits. The French toast with creme fraiche and fruit compote (no maple syrup) was very good and definitely large enough to share. The buckwheat polenta was nicely prepared, but it seemed pretty much like oatmeal to us, and we probably should have just ordered more grilled bread. We would definitely return!"

"Good food. We went for brunch and tried the crab, lamb ragu and pork sausages. They were delicious. Also preferred teh house ade dougnuts oer the french toasts.
They dont have decaf coffee beans, the drinks are OK, their bloody orange mimosas are ok, they also have a copy of peruvian-chileans pisco sours but not as great as teh originals.
It is a very busy place and waiter forgot some of our orders, hostess was not very friendly."

"I very much enjoyed our dinner and wondered how I had failed to try this place earlier ----it has been open for 3 years? The menu was quite limited which could be a major drawback with a picky eater, but each of us (3) had a different entree and each remarked on how good our dinner was. I found the space wonderful and very interesting but did find the music turned up a bit too loud as the evening went on and the restaurant filled. If anything, I found the music at that point became a competing and annoying din. I will however dine at Camino again."

"Camino's food was very delicious. Cooked just right without many spices so the true food flavors came through beautifully.
They are using Four Barrel Coffee that is "hand selected and direct trade and roasted by had in San Francisco by people who take coffee really seriously according to the owner." We thought it tasted like bad mid-west coffee and suggested that they look into another company but they said: "Their roast is a little lighter than what some people are used to but the idea is to let the specific qualities of the beans show through."
Leopold Whiskey from Colorado was excellent."

"Bar snacks were incredible. Fried artichokes were so flavorful. Dinner was amazing..the salad with spring onion frittata and radishes was so innovative. Nettle soup and the crab dish were so light and their wine list is great too. Sitting at the communal table is always fun as you get to talk to all sorts of people if you want."

"We come here repeatedly because the menu changes frequently and though quite limited, it never fails to be innovative and delicious. Service is friendly but sketchy - they never seem like professional servers but like people who offered to step up and help out. Often takes a bit long to get the food and diners at the same table are not always served simultaneously. Kitchen problem not being able to coordinate would be my guess. Yet the food ad ambience keep us coming back!"

"Love the atmosphere with the wood oven and open fire - great atmosphere and a perfect way to prepare the delicious seasonal dishes. Service is warm and welcoming, staff knows the menu so well and responded to all our questions."
