A word from CAMAJE Bistro
A hidden little gem in the heart of greenwich village. This noveau French American bistro was established in 1997 by owner/chef Abigail Hitchcock. This cozy, intimate, yet casual restaurant offers a local, seasonal menu at affordable prices. Enjoy dinner on our sofa while taking in the views of the historic townhouses of the Village and the people who live in the neighborhood.

Chef Abby's creations include appetizers like hot crab dip, socca (a chick pea pizza) served with a red pepper coulis and entrees like hanger steak, house smoked duck sandwich, and our wildly popular Banoffee Pie.
We also offer hands on cooking classes and corporate events!

Diner Reviews
  • "My wife and I had a nice dinner. The service was very attentive and the food was tasty. Our only comments are that the portions were small and my wife thought it would have been nice to have vegetables with her rack of lamb."

  • "They were bizarrely slow and the server was annoyed that we asked how much longer it would be. They made us feel bad for asking. The food was okay. It felt like a second-rate experience to be honest."

  • "Had a great meal here almost 10 years ago, and for various reasons never made it back until last weekend. Now I wish we'd tried harder; it was even better than I remembered. Warm friendly atmosphere, not at all fussy, and really good food. Which for a miracle was not over-salty! (My current hobby horse - salt is a crucial taste component, but I find a lot of otherwise superb restaurants are overplaying it lately.) Ernest was great, good banter and while he was rushing, never made us feel rushed. The crostini to start were good but not mind-blowing. But the fish was delicate, perfectly toothy in the crust and delicate in the middle - perfect. My wife had a lamb tagine that was also excellent, savoury and a little sweet."

  • "It's hard to say anything negative about Camaje since as soon as we arrived (40 minutes too early) we were made to feel welcome. It was actually before the place was open for dinner service but our waitress invited us in, gave us a seat on the couch and served us tea. Instead of looking for some place to kill time before dinner, we were able to luxuriate on that couch till our table was ready. The service continued to be good, although I think our waitress was a bit overwhelmed when the place got crowded, and as another reviewer observed, noisy. Our food was fine but not outstanding and I found that we were a bit crowded once we were off the couch and seated at a table. So would we go back again? Yes and no."

  • "The place should pick one -- restaurant, cooking school or child care...wailing toddlers in the front of the tiny dining room and wine guzzling, loud cooking students taking class in the back half of the dining room. Place was cramped, even the thin staff had trouble navigating to the tables. Waiter was very friendly but the only side dish ordered with the entrees (Mac and cheese) wasn't ready by the time we had both finished our entrees. Perhaps kitchen staff was distracted with the cooking class and forgot the Mac and cheese? Or perhaps the wailing toddlers broke the chef's concentration? Food was fine but if you want to relax over dinner this just isn't the place on Friday evenings."

  • "We got a last-minute reservation for a party of five to celebrate my mom's 68th birthday. We were seated at a nice circular table and it was quiet enough that my hard-of-hearing dad could participate in the entire conversation - a big win! The atmosphere is intimate, super friendly and casual not stuffy. The food is excellent - especially the hangar steak, the duck, and the desserts. I'm intrigued by the cooking classes and the sensory meals they offer, and I will recommend it to everyone. The owner told us they've been in business for 17 years, and it's the kind of place you hope will stay in business forever."

  • "cozy village spot, just south of the more chaotic part of Macdougal. GREAT service with a personal friendly feel. tasty apps and entrees with a really solid middle-of-the-road price point."
