The food was excellent! The Italian cheese and meat sampler was laid out beautifully and very fresh. The meatballs were some of the best we have ever had. Our entrees were delicious and meticulously prepared. We loved the BYOB feature and will be going back soon!

Celebrated our wedding anniversary with two close friends & thoroughly enjoyed our Saturday evening. Since it is BYOB we brought with us a great bottle of champagne and white wine. We shared two first plates, Asparagus wrapped in prosciutto w/ grana padano cheese (Remarkable!)&the spicy polpette, pork & beef meatballs in a spicy tomato sauce - excellent. One of us had the Tomato Basil soup, very good. We each had a different entre - stuffed calamari, monkfish, lasagne, and baked salmon - everyone delighted with their choice. We tasted/shared the rich spicy, delicious carrot cake, the light fruit tart & the lovely strawberry caramel cream cake. The service was excellent & we thoroughly enjoyed this new neighborhood restaurant!

  • My experience at Calle's Cucina

    Dined on 4/25/2012
My experience at Calle's Cucina was dichotomous, but overall very good. I came in for lunch with two co-workers. The good: We were seated and settled quickly. The server took our orders promptly and attended to us well. The food was outstanding. I had the pizza fra diavla and it was excellent. I also had the gelati of the day (coconut) that was wonderfully creamy and obviously homemade. My co-workers had the pizza margherita and meatballs, respectively, which they both enjoyed. The bad: The server, although attentive, was a bit pushy as far as advertising the wonderful things Calle's had to offer. She interrupted and eavesdropped on our conversation at times to interject things about the restaurant, which was very uncomfortable.

I was excited that a Italian Bistro was in Charles Village and jumped at the opportunity to try it out. While the ingredients were fresh and the service wonderful, the cuisine was not representive of any Italian regional dish I have ever had having lived in the region for many years. For instance, citrus glazed Mahi Mahi with basmati rice tex mex medley? Really? The chef is skilled in technique and presentation throughout the several courses I had, but that is not enough for me to rave on Calle Cucina. Once Calle Cucina better defines their cuisine and palate, I believe it will be an amazing gem in Charles Village.

We live in the neighborhood and were excited to check out Calle's Cucina for dinner. We enjoyed ourselves and would definitely go back, and we hope the restaurant comes to thrive on the block. Some of the dishes seemed to fall short of their potential; the fresh scallops were certainly fresh but not well seared and paired with frozen veggies (broccoli and carrots), making the whole thing seem cheap (it wasn't very cheap). The broccoli orchiette had seemingly frozen vegetables too, and not in proportion to the giant serving of pasta it came with. The service was attentive and friendly and the total cost of dinner was reasonable. Some fresher ingredients and bolder seasonings would step up the game, we'll definitely try it again in the summer

Another terrific dinner at Calle's Cucina! Everything about this restaurant is welcoming. Our compliments to Chef Carl - the rockfish and scallops were delicious – beautifully prepared and presented. The lasagna Bolognese was a definite hit. Lance was an attentive waiter. We thoroughly enjoy coming here for dinner. The BYOB is just a plus! Thank you for another wonderful dinner.

All I can say is...what a wonderful place! We had stopped by this place to pick up dessert once, and recently gave the dinner scene a try after having obtained a living social voucher. We were anything but disappointed. The service was very attentive, the food amazing. It's a small place, with the kitchen open at the entrance, and a warm friendly staff. The chef is forefront in all that is done here, and even recognized us from when we stopped by a month ago, sent out a complimentary tasting plate, and stopped by to deliver our entrees and check on our experience. The food pricing is appropriate for the quality, and as its a byob, you can save your wine money for the food experience. This will be our neighborhood place.

3.5 stars! This BYOB place serves a smallish menu full of quality food that is fresh and mostly local. This place doesnt serve your dinner on fancy plates and sometimes the glasses dont match- but its quirky and he newly minted chef does a good job on the appetizers and entrees. TSalads come with mostly every dish and are simple yet fresh. Most dishes seem prepared to order so dinenr can take awhile, but its a relaxing atmosphere and looking at the art on the walls makes for a fun way to pass the time. Not a fancy schmancy place- but a great addition to the neighborhood.

Four of us had a lovely well paced meal. Apps of smoked salmon were great. We had Braciole, Salmon Pasta, Pork Pesto and Turbot entree, preceded by salads (not mentioned in menu). All enjoyed their meals very as they were very fresh and rich in flavor. The breads were used to get the last of the sauces. We shared dessert of chocolate crunch cake (no crunch but tasty) and strawberry cake. The portions were just right for us. It was a real bonus to bring our own Italian wines and the chef/owner stopped by for a brief chat.

A charming little restaurant that is a great addition to the neighborhood. The food was delicious and the chef came to our table to discuss the meal with us. I mentioned in the reservation that I was vegan and the chef accommodated me with a delicious artichoke pasta dish. The vegan carrot and avocado soup was beyond good. Chef also sent out small appetizers that were wrapped in thinly sliced cucumber, one vegan the other not. The wait staff was very attentive and met our every need. We brought our own wine so the dinner was very reasonable. I plan to make this restaurant a regular.

We went there on valentine. Although we had reservations we had to wait over an hour. Also the food was over priced for what they were serving. Instead of serving Italian food since it is an Italian restaurant. They were doing some German inspired valentine special. Also the food took for ever to come out. And they served sodas in a can like a carry out.Was very disappointed on the outcome of dinner. I might go back for lunch for some pasta. But never again for a special occasion.

As a nearby resident I was very pleased to see something of gourmet quality settle in my neighborhood. I'm also happy to say my experience was overall very good, with the exception of the apparent disconnect between the kitchen and dining room. Being Valentine's day I figured on a full house and made an early reservation. This proved wise as my companion and I sat at the last available table. Customers with later reservations were forced to a long wait, and some gave up. I was glad I brought two bottles of wine which made the rather long wait between courses quite tolerable - the dinner lasted two hours. Still the food when it arrived came piping hot and worth the wait. Everything tasted as lovingly prepared. I hope for their success.

We had early dinner reservation on Feb 14. We were greeted warmly and seated - the wait staff most attentive. This is byob and our wine was uncorked immediately. We started with the lobster ravioli and had the fish and osso buco. Both were beautifully prepared and delicious. We have a diner with dietary restrictions and they were most gracious in working with us. We finished with the Strawberry caramel cake , which is was simply perfect. Light, moist, the filling incredible with the chocolate topping - heart shaped as well.

Still a lot of kinks to work out. Music would be a nice touch. And maybe a curtain to go around the bus station located right in the middle of the dining room. I liked the food, but it needs some working out before I'd send someone there with a strong recommendation. I think the restaurant is headed in a good direction, but it still needs a little work. Definitely nice to have a new addition to the neighborhood.

I am so happy a new restaurant opened in lower Charles Village and what a sweet little restaurant it is (plus it's BYOB!). The Italian-influenced menu is small but very flexible for dietary restrictions. The portions were the perfect size (not too big, not too small) and the pacing of the meal was leisurely. Don't go here if you want a quick meal--Calle's is a place to relax, savor, and enjoy. The risotto was a little flat but everything else from the meat/cheese platter to the osso buco and dessert was quite lovely. I will definitely return again to sample the pizza and the brunch. Calle's Cucina is off to a strong start and I have a feeling this place will only get better with time. Welcome to the neighborhood, Chef Carl!

We ate there within the first month of opening, so they have some kinks to work out. Whole bronzini was delicious, while pesto pork chop and bracciole were average. Panna cotta was as good as you'll find in Italy. Very nice, sparsely furnished dining room. Good choice of house sparkling water as well as Pelligrino. Friendly chef and waitstaff. BYO IS THE VERY BEST PART!!!!! Well worth a visit, and we hope to see improvements as they mature.

If you enjoy authentically well-prepared food in sensibly-sized portions, Calle's Cucina could be for you. It's rooms haven't the fresh-from-the-decorator's chic one often associates with fine dining, in America; it's service staff hasn't the hard polish of seasoned professionals. Nothing at Calle's Cucina screams big money. What radiates instead is joy in presenting good ingredients cooked with knowledgeable simplicity, in the same manner fortunate diners will perhaps have experienced in Florence, or Naples, or Genoa.
