  • "One of our favourite spots in the city, especially when entertaining visitors, so we were sad when the Columbus Ave. location closed. But in the move around the corner to W 81st, things have only got better. The dining space is now much larger, but in fact the new layout provides more intimate and inviting environs to enjoy the delicious and interesting food. Portions are generous, and the wine and cocktails leave nothing to be desired. All the staff were welcoming, efficient and professional. Pricing would not allow this to be a regular dining spot, but for vivitors and special occasions, not to mention buisiness dining, the values are excellent. We'll be back"

  • "Great food. Great ambiance. Great service. Bar is right by the entrance and is usually really loud but as you walk back to the dining area you could swear you never heard any of it. They're wonderful at spacing out the guests so it's almost intimate, but that could have been because I went on a Monday night. I called in advance to make a request since I was coming as a congratulatory surprise dinner and it was a complete surprise. Didn't even have to remind them when I arrived. My favorite restaurant."

  • "This was my first time in the 'new' Called Ocho location within the Excelsior Hotel and I wS more than pleased that the decor was maintained as much as possible. I always loved the conversation pit near the bar and the warm colors throughout the restaurant. Especially nice was the warm greeting when I first arrived, very good people at the check-in and also at the bar. The menu has also been maintained. A very good evening."

  • "I adore this restaurant!! The food never disappoints, the service is always great, and so are the drinks. I would go to this restaurant for their dinner rolls alone - and they are Gluten Free! Made with Yuka flour, they are the most delicious things I have ever eaten. Many gluten free choices on the menu as well, for those who cannot have gluten. Seriously, this is one of my favorite restaurants in NYC."

  • "I have enjoyed Calle Ocho in the past. They have great sangrias and the shrimp appetizers are fantastic. I felt all the main courses at our table of 4 were just average in flavor. Nothing particularly wrong, but not as good as the kitchen has potential to bring out. Enjoyable atmosphere, lively but not overly loud because they are careful with spacing the seating."

THe food was simply amazing My wife and I both had the Dulce appetizer - fresh tomatoes, great corn cake with flavorful goat cheese. My wife and best friend had the Carne for dinner and were extremely happy with their steak. I had the Vaca Frita and was simply in heaven - the skirt steak was sooooo moist and loaded with flavor. The sunny-side up egg served on top was perfect. 2 other friends had the Lechon and the Lubina and were awed at their meals. We all had desserts which were almost as good as the entrees. My only SMALL suggestion would be to infuse a little more lemon flavor in my dessert. Overall, outstanding and worth every dime."

  • "My dining experience at Calle Ocho was surprisingly disappointing. The staff was great but the food was just so-so - not really acceptable at those prices. I started off with the Dulce empanada which was promising. A little cold but flavorful nonetheless. For my entree I had the steak with yucca fries. I love fried yucca but these fries seemed not to be cooked all the way thru. I was so disappointed! The steak was just ok. Nothing special. I found the meat a bit tough despite that it was cooked to my liking at medium. I had expected a lot from my meal as everything sounded so delicious on the menu but the reality was a let down. Our meal came out to $280 without tip. I am definitely willing to spend that if the food could only measure up."

  • "I really enjoy this place; this is my second time here I was there for dinner for my birthday and for brunch on a Saturday, both times it was very nice. When I went for dinner it was on a Tuesday and it was very romantic and not too packed which was nice. When I went for brunch on a Saturday it was very energetic and very full...every corner of the venue was full. The service and food was fast and the sangrias were amazing! I also recommend trying the mojito (non-flavored) it is very good and reminded me of the ones you have beach side at Miami. The food is flavorful and good presentation. I would recommend this place to anyone with a flair for Spanish cuisine."

  • "The entire staff were not only providing excellent service and were also extremely friendly and courteous, down to the coat check personnel. We probably expect more than most people do for the upper end of Latin food, but everything we ordered (and ate) was tasty and in generous portions. My wife ordered the large appetizer sampler as her dinner, with a black beans and rice side. It was a great choice. I would love to go back on my next trip to New York and heartily recommend the Calle Ocho to anyone who likes good food and great service. They made us feel like family, despite the fact that this is a large restaurant with formal service and is clearly an up-scale dining experience. We had a wonderful time. The price was very fair for NYC."

  • "It's a cool place, located in a hotel that you'd never guess would house a hot spot. Sadly though, the food is decent but not spectacular. My chicken ( the waiter said it was the best thing on the menu) was a bit dry. My friend had the pork and it was a bit too salty, and I LOVE salt. The evening was made better by some rather outstanding Sangria, so that's a beautiful thing!! In a different city maybe I'd return, but in New York there are far too many options."

  • "Calle Ocho is fantastic. Had brunch here on Saturday and it was the perfect way to start the day and weekend. The food is delicious, the service was quite spectacular and now I know why they are known for their unlimited Sangria. This place gets packed so you have to make a reservation but it is worth it. It is just a block from Central Park so after some great food, one too many glasses of Sangria, we hit the park. Great way to start the weekend! Thank you to the wait staff who were spectacular and checked in quite frequently and kept our Sangria’s full. Great menu options as well and you the mini-muffins served upon arrival at your table were yummy!"

  • "We have been coming to Calle Ocho after finding it on Restaurant week a few years ago and we haven't stop coming back. We came for the deal but we fell in love with the brunch! Its a must do at least one or two times for the summer for me and my crew. It's often hard to get a reservation and don't event think about trying on short notice. Typically we plan a few weeks out and then times flies and its boozy brunch day! It's also great for a group dinner."

My personal favorite is the Spanish Harlem, a red sangria that is robust in flavor. The bread is simply wonderful, coming hot to your table. My husband and I took advantage of the three course menu designed for restaurant week. We ordered different appetizers, entrees & desserts and were both happy with our selections. The presentation of the food is pretty, but equally tasty. Super flavorful and filling. We love Calle Ocho!"
