A word from Calle Ocho
More festive than a piñata stuffed with a mariachi band and twice as stylish, Calle Ocho’s lively crowd is amped up on Mojitos, Caipirinhas, Sangria and Spanish wine or beer and shows no sign of slowing down. Those not willing or able to holler over the salsa music retire to the two small lounge areas to commiserate. The bar area is a prelude to their Nuevo Latino cuisine in the dining room that will knock your taste buds for a loop. If you’re in need of a quick jump-start, Calle Ocho will get your motor running. Diner Reviews
  • "Overall great place great food great place. The service was a bit off. Waiter wasn't so attentive after the first drink. I saw the busboys a lot more."

  • "Food was lovely. Not superior, but very good. Sangria choices were a big deal!"

  • "The ambiance seemed nice, cozy and laid back. They had Latin music playing and nice little lounge at the entrance. When placing our entrée order we were told that a large party had just ordered and they were out of their most popular steak dish. We were a party of four and ordered three paellas and a skirt steak plater. The presentation of the plates was really nice and appealing but the food itself was not good at all. I was highly dissatisfied overall."

  • "Tasty Latin food near the museum of natural history. Only complaint was the Caiparinha. There was nothing to it but ice. But the Pisco Sour was tasty, ample, and, after adding a little extra lime juice, authentic."

  • "The menu, the food, the service, ambiance all were top notch. Everyone needs to go here at least once and if you live in the neighborhood you Gould make it a regular dining spot."

  • "I enjoyed my time at Calle Ocho, I will most likely go back before the end of the summer. The food and drinks were great and the service was good as well."

We were offered a complementary plate of sweet plantains. We will definetly go back. The staff over all were very respectful and attentive to all your needs. Great experience."

  • "I hadn't been back to Calle Ocho since they have moved to this new spot: The Excelsior hotel. It is a very nice venue, smaller and more intimate than the previous location. I like it better. Less noisy too. The food was great: my paella was delicious, the tacos appetizers we shared were delicate. Definitely a plc a I'll go back to."

  • "A favorite place to eat on UWS, especially when going to Shakespeare in the Park. Excellent location and very generous portions"

  • "This is my second time dining at Calle Ocho. First time at this new location. The food was delicious, and the steak and salmon were cooked to degree of doneness we had requested. But, alas, the fried green plantains (tostones or patacones) were a disappointment. If the restaurant cannot get good green plantains they should not put them on the menu, and just offer the maduros (ripe plantains) as a side dish."

  • "We had reservations on a saturday night at 8:30 .. quiet busy but was sat promptly 15 minutes before our reservations. Over all one of my best restaurants for over 4 years"

  • "Calle Ocho has become our default good-time restaurant. The service and food are always impeccable. What makes Calle Ocho really stand out is that the sides and garnishes are always as attentively made as the protein."

  • "A meat heavy menu provided less variety than we might have liked. Mushroom paella as advertised, but a little bland and on one note. Carne (skirt steak on saffron mashed potatoes with roast asparagus) much more appealing. Decent value. Hotel Excelsior frames a relaxed open kitchen setting."

  • "I am always a little cautious when it comes to hotel restaurants but Calle Ocho was great. Once you are in the restaurant you don't even know you are in a hotel. The restaurant was busy and it seemed to be more locals than guests. Food was excellent. Skirt steak was divine. Drinks were also great. Sadly we didn't have time for dessert but that's a reason to go back next time."

  • "Everything was wonderful , start to finish. Great place to bring a friend/ significant other for a special occasion. Make sure you're prepared to drink your weight in sangria!"

  • "Had Sunday brunch with a friend. At first service was decent. The waitress came over fairly quickly and took our order. She was very pleasant and we got out sangrias. As the place got crowded, the waitress could not be found. She came over and waited on the table next to us but always had her back to us and never looked our way. Both my friend and I ordered the vaca frita. My friend does not like her fried eggs runny and asked for it to be cooked through. When the food came, they asked who has the cooked egg and gave her the plate. All eggs on both plates were runny but my friend ate around it. My steak was half the size of my friend's and I had less rice. Luckily, the bread was plentiful and delicious so I filled up on that."

  • "I enjoyed celebrating a friend's birthday there recently. We wanted to eat at some place that was different from the type of places that we normally go to with very good food, an upbeat atmosphere, but not too loud. Calle Ocho was perfect. it was fun to choose from the vast array of Latin dishes that were unique to us. We were very pleased."

  • "I found the food and service to amazing...our waitress was great with recommendations and handling 10 energetic women out for a bachelorette party. Loved the vibe and definitely would go again. And the bread the serve is super addicting."

  • "Bottomless sangria brunch never fails to disappoint. Food is very nice. Do try the chimichurri fries. They're amazing. Get a reservation cause this place is packed at 12pm."

  • "I took my dad here for fathers day a few weeks ago and immediately knew I had to come back with friends! Came back and was NOT disappointed. The food was AMAZING - Had the Maiz y Camarones, which is to die for! And we definitely left a little tipsy - great way to start my weekend!"

  • "Everything we ordered tasted very good - the ceviches are really tasty and the calamari was a very unique preparation that is quite yummy and has a surprising bit of spice to it - but generally speaking everything seemed a bit too salty to us. If the kitchen were to cut back on the salt and let the spices, herbs and natural flavors of the fresh ingredients come through, everything could be even more tasty. Overall though, Calle Ocho offers attentive service, decent food, fun cocktails and is reasonably priced."

  • "Food came out fast, cold, and just not as good. It's as if everything was prepared in advance and hustled out."

  • "We went to Calle Ocho for the second year in a row to celebrate our anniversary. The food was delicious and the drinks are flavorful. The ambience is nice with slightly dim romantic lighting. The staff is kind and attentive without being overbearing or annoying. We will definitely return. The food is also reasonably priced."

  • "The experience was a rewarding one however, it was very disappointing that three of their main dishes were not available on the menu on Father's Day at that. The food that I was fortunate to have, the sea bass, was excellent."

  • "Tried a wide variety of sangria, and the steak was melt in your mouth delicious!"

  • "My wife and I visited Calle Ocho with another couple on a Saturday night. The employees were very professional. We all liked the food and the pitchers of Sangarias we tried. Our waiter was very friendly and professional. The only downside was the restaurant wasn't too packed for a Saturday night. By the way, the food and drink prices are very reasonable."

  • "Great restaurant, excellent Maitre'd, excellent service. You pay for: the comfortable lounge seating throughout the restaurant; first class waiter service; great food; and ambiance. We went for dinner. I can't wait to try their bottomless Sangria brunch. First class, first-rate; in NYC, you pay for excellence and this was worth every penny."

  • "They're food was tasty and the portions large. They made a mistake with our order, serving only four of five entries. We were not offered any compensation or extras for this mistake. The drinks are seriously over priced - tasty, but full of ice so only a few sips of worth."

  • "Calle Ocho is one of the best bottomless brunch places in NYC. You get complimentary sangria for as long as your table is eating. There are about 9-10 different white and red sangrias to choose from and they are all tasty! I ordered the skirt steak and it was good, but not as flavorful as I thought it would be. Besides that, the bread and sangria are fabulous! I highly recommend it for a large group for brunch. Enjoy!"

  • "It has been a while since I've been to Calle Ocho (in fact the last time was when they were located on the other side of 81st street). So i was a bit disappointed in the quality of the food, I recall the food having so much more flavor. Still the overall experience was very good."

  • "Hadn't been there in a while but glad to see nothing's changed at Calle Ocho… the food was amazing and the ambiance fun. With excellent and friendly service! Highly recommend."

  • "An interesting menu and great service make this an appealing option, especially since the food is very nicely prepared. The wait staff seems to really care whether or not you are enjoying your food. However, this is not the place if you are at all interested in quiet conversation as the noise level is beyond oppressive."

  • "The food was great but took a while.... We complained about it and we got a pitcher of sangria for free. I like the place but food should have not taken that long. "

  • "I had been to Calle Ocho at the former location, and hasn't yet tried it in the new place at the Excelsior. It was just as vibrant for groups an out of town guests as always. The food wasn't as daring as I remember, but it was still good. The fried plantains were overcooked, so be selective about the appetizer menu. The new strong suit on the entrees is fish. Our wait person was stellar and outgoing with our group. One note about the drinks -- among us we had cocktails and sangria -- use of spirits is very skimpy; the sangria tasted like watered down fruit punch, and a friend's cocktail had almost no alcohol to speak of. We are not big drinkers, but thought to mention it to a place that may be competing with Rosas for business."
