  • "It was a very nice place and I will be coming back again, hopefully real soon."

  • "This is our second time to this restaurant. The view is wonderful, high atop a hill overlooking the ocean. The food is delicious and we will return again soon."

  • "The fact that we had reservations seemed irrelevant as we were given the last available table which happened to be the worst. Unfortunately this diminished our dining experience."

  • "This is our third time. We discovered this gem 2 years ago and we will make it point to have lunch here whether we're staying on the area, visiting the Bay Area or Wine Country--it's worth the drive. The views are breathtaking and while we were disappointed in not being able to sit outside, we still had the views and the food. I had my favorite a succulent swordfish sandwich and my wife had the to die for fish tacos. We will be back and we can't wait for our next opportunity."

  • "This was a wonderful experience. It was my birthday and everything was perfect. We each had a delicious swordfish sandwich which was served with either french fries or a salad. We had a dessert & the server put a little happy birthday sign on it. We plan to return again soon. The view was absolutely breathtaking!"

  • "We found outdoors too hot (!) and umbrellas did not tilt for good shading. . .we ate indoors, same great view, delicious food, but had to find a server after having been seated for some time to receive service. The attitude of the 2nd server far improved over initial one."

  • "This place has great food and whale watching too. They will lend you binoculars if you don't bring your own. for best viewing come as a party of two ( or be willing to split up). Tables by the railing are for two only."

  • "My girlfriend and I had a wonderful lunch at the California Market on Sunday December 29. This was the first time either of us visited this specific restaurant at Carmel highlands. The food, a salad, soup and sandwich were prepared very well. The ambiance was wonderful also. The service, especially by Angel Hernandez was great. We definitely will come to this restaurant again as well as the dinner place Pacific Edge Restaurant."

  • "Went to California Market twice during our visit to the area between Christmas and New Years 2013. On our first visit, we had the calamari and the burger. Today, we had the special Monterey Dungeness crab sandwich. Both visits were remarkable by the view from the deck, the quality of service, and the delicious food. The pesto aioli perfectly complemented the calamari. The remoulade on the crab sandwich was subtle and yummy. The crab cake seemed to be ALL crab. Maybe there was some binder but it was a minority constituent. Given the traffic in Monterey, the crowds in Carmel, and the beautiful view, we will definitely return to California Market for a great lunch. Also saw 4 whales. Can't beat that."

  • "Lovely breakfast overlooking the Pacific. Service a bit slow as it was a Sunday morning and they were a little busy. Ordered items were not received as ordered but that was quickly rectified. We will definitely be back as it was a great way to start the day."

  • "We enjoyed our first experience here. Food was very good, service was good. Great view. We watched whales migrating south for the winter. The only drawback is the pool below and on this day it was busy (and noisy). Overall, we highly recommend."

  • "Between the great food, service and awesome views this restaurant is a gem not to be missed."

  • "When I made the reservation for lunch, I explained that we were celebrating our anniversary and would like a table on the deck. We arrived and while being escorted to our table, the gentleman wished us a Happy Anniversary. Nice. Our food although pricey was good especially the fish tacos. Service wasn't great except for the bus boy. At those prices ($60.00) for lunch, you think they could have offered us a small dessert to share for our anniversary. To add to our disappointment, the fog rolled in and we didn't have much of a view to enjoy."

  • "We visit the Peninsula an average of twice per year. Our stay always ends with lunch on the outside deck before heading to the airport in San Jose. This trip we got to watch the whales heading south to Baja. Always have trouble deciding what to select from their menu.. everything is wonderful! Can't wait for our next trip back!"

  • "When we arrived we asked for Tony to be our waiter because he is one of the best anywhere. The special was seafood over pasta in a light cream sauce which was delicious. We also had the Point Reyes Blue Cheese salad which was great as was the Portabella Sandwich. This place is a little expensive especially if you have more than one glass of wine. However, the view of the California coast is one of the best. Though the temperatures outside were cool (50s) the sun did a great job warming up the place. If the sun is too much there are umbrellas. And if the sun is not enough there are heaters. There were dolphins in the ocean and the restaurant has binoculars. This is a favorite place of ours worthy of special occasions."

  • "Overall an OK experience, our waitress went on break without telling us, and we had to work a bit engaging the other staff for condiments, missing toast, and coffee warm ups. Once she was back things went much better. The view is spectacular, the food is good, and the service is warm and friendly."

  • "This place is here for its views. Way to pricey for the quality. It's not bad but its not great either, especially for the $$$."

  • "If it weren't for the most breathtaking view of the bay, I don't think I would have ever came to this restaurant. The waiters took forever doing anything. There would be staff standing around talking to one another but no one taking our orders. The guys that filled our waters were the only staff that seemed to be working the hard, so at least our water glasses were constantly filled. The food was alright, it was nothing spectacular. And the food came out in a timely manner. I wouldn't say the service was bad, I would just have to say that if you plan to come to this restaurant, prepare to be staying awhile. This venue is meant for a relaxing brunch where time means nothing. This way, you would be more likely to enjoy yourself."

  • "Not a first visit for the four of us, but first time sitting indoors at window--fabulous view and toasty warm. Service was impeccable as always. Two of us ordered the excellent fish tacos, this time made with locally caught swordfish, bathed in a light white sauce with plenty of zing in the accompanying salsa. One person ordered the special scallops of the day with asparagus and the other opted for a chicken club, both of which were totally satisfying. It's nice to be able to count on the high standards and quality of this restaurant."

  • "Food: My eggs benedict was pretty gross. The english muffin was soggy (probably because the artichokes and red peppers were canned and full of liquid) and the whole thing was very overseasoned. Service: We asked for the check. After 10 minutes, the check still had not arrived, so I went inside and asked someone else. When the check arrived, I showed the waiter the verification page on the restaurant.com app and he told me he did not accept the mobile app and I needed the print-out. I came back and explained all my concerns to a manager (lack of quality, wait time, having to go print off the certificate when they could easily specify that in details, etc.). The manager did not apologize."

  • "Celebrated a birthday with lunch here--perfection! Delicious, sustainably caught salmon and swordfish, each in a different sandwich presentation accompanied by salad and crisp fries. Elected to forego the wine (but a wonderful list from which to choose) to indulge in their unbeatable chocolate mousse cake with whipped cream and fresh berries. Best thing about the day was the fabulous view from the deck out to the Pacific where we watched for humpback whales. Service is impeccable. Can't wait to go again."

  • "Hadn't dined at the California Market in a couple years - WOW, lunch prices have skyrocketed! Expected edgier food, especially for the price. Calamari ($16) was greasy and not that tender. Monterey Salad ($16) only had 3 shrimp (though perfectly cooked). Food service started out quite slow. Great bartender, who made an excellent Bloody Mary, adding a beer back by request. The prices (lunch for 2 = $100+) along with last year's not good food and service experience at Pacific's Edge (anniversary dinner, which we've had wonderful times in past years) makes me write off the Highlands Inn as a food destination for future annual visits to the area. There are many other exceptional food venues in the area to be enjoyed!"

  • "We've come come to this restaurant many times in the past on our trips to the area. However, their prices have become exorbitant. A simple lunch for two with one glass of wine and tip came to $62. That evening, we had dinner in Carmel at a nice restaurant for ten dollars less, including the glass of wine. Probably won't return unless it's for a drink only."

  • "While the menu is diverse and the food is good, it is the view that is the essence of this restaurant. Clear or cloudy, it is still spectacular."

  • "Our first impression of the Ca. Market at Carmel Highland was impressive. Beautiful view and very good ambience. We came to celebrate our 14 years anniversary with our two boys. Our reservation was at 3:15pm and that's the only time available. The service was very poor. They spent more time trying to get ready for dinner arrival that they didn't check up on us. How annoying. The food was okay but my husband did enjoy the cioppino and boys did like the view. I had to find someone to give us our check and refills. Didn't bother with dessert. BIG DISAPPOINTMENT IN SERVICE FOR UPSCALE RESTAURANT when you spend $100 plus. Oh, well.... I 'm hoping that the management will read this and improve their customer service next time."

  • "The food was good. The Portobello Burger was excellent. My fish tacos were good - not "to die for" but good. The french fries were great but the salad was just some mixed greens with a touch of blah vinaigrette. My husband ordered his burger medium well but it came out medium rare. They took it back to the kitchen & it came back right but minus the tomatoes, lettuce & onions. Wait staff was busy so my husband decided to eat it without the fixings but he was disappointed. We never got a water refill & only got more iced tea when we asked. The view on the deck is beautiful & the gardens out front are gorgeous. Valet service is a nice treat. I would go back if I was in Carmel already. But, I would not come from San Jose just to eat there."

  • "I always love the Market - the views are spectacular, the food is delicious and the service is friendly - and they take Open Table reservations!"

  • "The restaurant is hard to get to and parking is a problem. We were marked as a "no show" by the restaurant on OpenTable and had to get that straightened out.. The email I sent to the restaurant manager was not acknowledged or answered. I doubt if we will go back. There are enough great restaurants out there than to be treated like that."
