Acclaimed restaurateur Stephen Starr, of Buddakan and Morimoto, brings casual elegance to the New-York Historical Society with Caffè Storico (Italian for “historic”).

Chef Matthew Oetting’s menu features Italian cuisine rooted in tradition yet refined with modern technique and seasonality. The handmade artisanal pastas are not to be missed. An all-Italian wine list with over fifty labels, twenty of which are available by the glass, accompanies a full bar.

The 74-seat dining destination is located in the newly renovated iconic Central Park West institution.

We had dinner around 6:30pm on a friday and it was relatively quiet, but by 8:30 when we left, almost all the tables were full of diners. We had well-informed waitress who could answer any questions we had. My friend had the salad for her app & the other two tried the lamb.The lamb appetizer was amazing. The portion was a decent size, could have shared. I didn't finish to save room for my entree. I chose the fish with lemon - Again, absolutely amazing dish. Probably the best fish I've had in awhile. They chose the chicken and said it was perfectly cooked and moist not dry. You must choose the apricot panna cotta. It's fabulous! Sweet & Tart, perfectly balanced."

After having spent ten minutes with the menu and settling on the two been items that I wished, I was advised my our waitress that neither of these was available (information that would have been far more helpful when the menus were provided). I struggled with the balance of the menu because I'm vegetarian, and when I explained this to our waitress, she left, saying she would give us "some more time" with no effort to assist or help me try and select something suitable. The service overall was lacklustre, which seems far below average when compared with other New York restaurants."

The food is always excellent and a very good mix of traditional and a little adventurous. they also vary their menu periodically during the year--each menu being equally delicious and fun. Whenever we have family or special friends visiting from outside NYC, we always bring them to Storico for dinner and every person has thanked us profusely as they eat every bit of food. Additionally, the service continues to be extremely professional--friendly but not obsequious/efficient but not hovering. Storico will continue to be one of our absolute favorite restaurants."

The food was very good i the beginning but is only passable as of our last experience. We had the skate dish which was very unappealingly presented and tasted so so. My daughter's bolognese was better but not great. Lack robustness that a bolognese should have. The small dishes with big prices can be annoying since the quality can be lacking. And here to fore the service had always been outstanding, but I had to flag down the waitress three times to get something and the place was maybe 1/5th full. Very sad and disappointed because I LOVE the space, so lovely and appealing. I'm hoping it has a killer brunch menu."

I was delighted and charmed by the decor, ambiance and service but was really knocked out when I was served my entree salad which was very large, beautiful, and delicious. It was an unexpected pleasure to have such a good lunch in a cafe within a museum. And I would say the price was not bad at all. It made for a very special occasion for me and my out of town guest."

  • "The room is attractive, but the "open" kitchen area, which is loud and not attractive, greatly detracts from the ambiance. I don't need to hear cooks yelling at each other and banging pans around when eating out. The food was all good (although pasta overcooked) at brunch, and cocktails were nicely done. The prices are a little high for brunch on the UWS. Service was polite and professional, but sometimes our server was hard to find and I noticed that adjacent tables were frustrated. I was hoping to find a new neighborhood spot that would become a favorite, but it didn't happen on this occasion. "

The Duck Ragu and the Pasta with Calabrian Chili were excellent. The ceilings are a bit too tall for the space. The plates are cute, but since you are in a museum, would have been nice to see instead some gold framed paintings or pieces/reproductions from the museum with changing displays/. The ambience while pleasant could have been anywhere....nothing to indicate that you were in a museum with beautiful collections. The restaurant should encourage visits to the museum. The statue of Frederick Douglas was a nice welcome....but perhaps some information on Frederick Douglas would have been nice. "

  • "We began with the Burrata & Roasted Baby Carrots, a tasty salad with the fresh mozzarella and proceeded to a delectable Prosciutto San Daniele Panini and Grilled Chicken Panini. Topped it off with coffee which was good. The decor was very bright and cheery, like sitting in someone's kitchen with the plates displayed around the room and wood wainscoting all around. Lacked a lot of sound absorbing material making it somewhat noisy when filled. Our waiter was very helpful in choosing appropriate foods for my "salt-challenged" companion, and since it was slow at the end of our dining, was able to chat up about the exhibit and museum."
