A word from Caffe Sport - San Francisco
Caffe Sport, by Antonio La Tona is one-of-a-kind among restaurants. While North Beach is full of Italian Restaurants, not many actually embody the spirit or the food of their homeland. Antonio La Tona’s homeland is Sicily, and Sicilian food is the best there is in Italy.

Every square inch of the interior is adorned with elaborately painted furniture and woodcarvings. Come in once and you’ll never forget, and you’ll see why Caffe Sport is so famous.

Come and read the autographed photos and letters from celebrities throughout the world who are all Caffe Sport fanatics.

With its unmatched decor, you won't be bored nor feel like you're in a sterile place, like most other restaurants. The waiter is friendly, a polyglot, and recommended exactly the best things on the menu. It´s an adorable and romantic place to take someone you love. Only minus: can feel a little stuffy in the back room.

I've been to Caffe Sport a number of times, but not in more than a decade (having moved out of the area). I thoroughly enjoyed going back again. The food was very good. The pesto could have used a tad more garlic, but the texture and flavor otherwise was great. The desserts (we had tiramisu and cannoli) were delicious. I had forgotten how quirky the interior was, but once inside it brought back lots of good memories. I look forward to going back.

Worst dining experience we've ever had in North Beach. Service was horrible & slow, waiter very inattentive & forgetful. Place was not very busy when we arrived, which was strange because we couldn't get an OT reservation time until 8 on a Sun. night. Took over 20 minutes after we were seated to even get bread or offered a drink. Ordered meals and were served about 20 minutes or so after, so that wasn't too bad at all. Waiter dropped off our food, and did not come back to check on the meal for at least another 20 min +. When he came back I had to ask for Parmesan cheese and S&P because my Linguine with clams was so bland. "World Famous" Pesto Gnocchi was way overboard on the garlic and was inedible. No effort was made to make it right.

Once again a great meal with great service. Been going to Caffe Sport since 1979 . . . willing to fight the North Beach lack of parking spaces to eat at Caffe Sport over and over.

This used to be a favorite spot, back as long ago as 1982. On recent visit it's gone downhill, sadly. Food not particularly well prepared (pesto pasta notable exception). Stale bread. Surprisingly inattentive service given it was not busy. Seems to have lost its passion.

  • Cafe Sport takes Credit cards & Rez

We have been scheduling a meal at Cafe Sport whenever we're in SF for 15+ years -- it's one of our "must do"s. We miss Mr Tony, but now they take reservations & credit cards - no more surprises for initiates! The food is still great with great seafood options, and the atmosphere & decor unsurpassed. Sometimes a little noisy (everyone's happy & chatting) but we could still hear each other -- the wood carvings absorb the sound-- nothing like those awful "modern" places with no sound insulation! This time we waited too long to make a Sat pm Rez -- but so book early! We enjoyed our Sunday dinner enormously, as we knew we would. Buon Appetito !

all items were brought at once, appetizer and 1st dish. The main dishes were drowning in the sauces, we ordered 3, and all 3 were over powered by garlic and way too much sauce. we were never asked if we wanted water or a cocktail. the taste of the sauces were good, but I like to have my appetizers first then my pasta, and I like to have the correct amount of sauce on the pasta, especially pesto. I also like to be asked if I'd like something to drink before my meal and during the meal with a follow up. Most restaurants operate this way.

Caffe Sport is a North Beach landmark. I HAD great memories of family outings there. Took my partner there for lunch. He had never been to North Beach, so I wanted it to be representative of a San Francisco experience that seems to have all but disappeared. The tiny restaurant was quiet (only three tables occupied, us being one of them). Gigi's Sotto Mare next door had all tables occupied and a line out the door. Bad sign. The Cioppino Bianco was well prepared EXCEPT for such massive amounts of raw garlic that I really couldn't taste the fish. I was regretting that menu choice for the next 24 hours, believe me. Service was very slow. Have to replace my fond memories of Caffe Sport with the sad certainty that I will not be back.

I lived in the Bay Area for a decade and used to bring friends to Caffe Sport for the great ambiance. On a recent trip back to San Francisco, we planned for lunch after sight-seeing in the city. OpenTable showed available tables until 2:30 that day and we took 2pm. When our tour ran long, I called Caffe Sport at 2pm and asked to change the time to 2:15 so we could get there by taxi. The manager said yes and we headed there. Unfortunately, he left a voicemail at 2:15 that he closed the kitchen on us. I called back right away when 1 block away and he refused to seat us. I'll never walk into Caffe Sport again. I'm sorry they seem to have lost their way over the years. It's clearly no longer about the customer experience. And that's a shame.
