A word from Caffe Gelato
Relaxed atmosphere, vibrant bar, good wine cellar (Wine Spectator Award of Excellence), great food, delicious house-crafted gelato and house-crafted pasta. Guests may request a semi-circle booth for parties up to 8, or a nice table. Outdoor seating is available in season and large groups may request a private room.
Caffe Gelato celebrates its 13-year anniversary. For lunch, look forward to trying our panini sandwiches on fresh baked sea-salt and rosemary foccacia, the featured salads or a house crafted pasta. At dinner try the Roasted Rack of Lamb, Prosciutto wrapped Veal Chop, Pan Roasted Pork Tenderloin, Pepper Seared Tuna, Maple Roasted Salmon or any of our 7 pastas. Brunch features omelets, crepes, poached eggs, and Creme Brulee French Toast. Favorite gelato flavors are "bacio" chocolate-hazlenut, mokka cappuccino, dark chocolate, creme brulee toffee and tiramisu.

  • "We love Caffe Gelato in Newark for the consistently great fine dining experience. We were greeted pleasantly by Hostess Allison who facilitated our Open Table reservation with a special request for a half moon booth in the new section. Our waiter Garrett performed admirably with a smile each time he attentively approached the table. Our dinner choice was Tenderloin Tip Tortellini Filet mignon tips sautéed with shiitake, button and portabella mushrooms, roasted garlic, baby spinach and roasted shallots, finished with a Marsala cream sauce over goat cheese and ricotta stuffed house-crafted tortellini ($ 24.75). Thanks to being on the mailing list our dinner got a $20 credit."

  • "I was there to celebrate my 50th with my family. I always get coupons in mail so I looked at menu online and it looked great. I had the polenta and short rib app. Beef tender but no flavor at all. Scallop entrée. Scallops cooked well. Peach relish did not belong. Tasted like canned corn and the peaches had no flavor. Asparagus woody. Entrée was luke warm. Others had filet which was very tough, brussel sprouts dry and cold. Pasta with shrimp and crab, shell in first bite. I really wanted to like this place. Hopefully it will improve. I brought the leftovers home and then threw them away. Server Eddie was great!"

  • "I'm in Delaware at least 4 times each year and we always go to Caffe Gelato as my step-daughter is a vegetating and they are happy to help her create food items. We all love the food BUT the service is another story. This past Sunday was very slow and we till had to wait almost 20 min.s for our first round of drinks. The staff was in the private wine room eating fast food and not giving a hoot what was going on in the restaurant. I drink what I think is a very simple drink, gray goose shaken ice cold straight up. I was asked 2 times what did you want & served a warm drink. The front of the house needs some serious work and a seasoned manager."

We a were able to shut the for when we needed a quieter moment for conversations on a very busy Friday night at Gelatos. Incredible food quality and selection for a fair price. Highly recommended."

  • "I haven't been to Caffe Gelato for many years due to a bad experience, and generally not impressed. So I went again as my friends wanted to go there. Same experience. Average to poor service. Overpriced food with average food. Young college kids working that aren't customer oriented - just going through the motions. A very simple request to have black olives on the Caesar salad. Instead of the server saying that they don't have black olives, he sets it down and says nothing. Okay - maybe he doesn't know the difference. He did - when it was mentioned to him he said "yeah, I figured they would put kalamata olives on it." When were you going to tell me."

  • "My wife and I had the pan seared ahi tuna entree which was just fine, nothing out of the ordinary. We had three kids who only ordered entrees, only I had a glass of wine and we each had one scoop of gelato for dessert. The bill for the five of us was over $200, which I think is too expensive for the amount of food we were actually served. The food is good, but it's expensive."

This time I ordered a salad which was very scrumptious, with yellow beets and some sort of marinated poached pears and marcona almonds-great flavors when all put together. My shrimp and lump crabmeat linguine is my favorite dish and (ordered as low sodium) was excellent. Jeff, our waiter, was impeccable as usual. He is the best waiter (and most handsome) at Gelato !"

  • "Ahh, the joys of summer! With the CIty of Newark back into a quiet urban mode for a few weeks, it was the right time to enjoy Cafe Gelato's patio and a great meal. Our wiater was very attentive, the food and beverages were properly served and a fine relaxing dining experince was enjoyed. Now, if only the City would relax its parking regulations! Even on Sunday, you need to keep your quarters handy or have acredit card at the ready. But, don't let that issue sway you from enjoying a nice meal and atmosphere at Cafe Gelato!"

Now unfortunately (4 visits in the past 3 months) both the food and the services has declined to the point that we will not go back. When the owner is present, the experience is better, but when he is not there, it is just another college town eatery."

When I got my Eggplant Parmesan It was just warm and a little on the dry side. I think that it might have been sitting out for a little while in the back before I got it. Sorry if I am sounding so negative but to the 3 of us at my table, we felt that the noise level was high and a bit distracting. Your restaurant was charming and everyone we dealt with was very professional and pleasant."

  • "We recently had a special graduation celebration dinner for my daughter. The staff worked with me to develop a customized pre-fixe menu for the event; this was a very nice feature. The day of the event was very quiet within the restuarant. We had a nice private table but it felt like we had the whole restaurant to ourselves. This was our first dining experience at Caffe Gelato. The food was amazing-especially the parmesan truffeled risotto-YUM. Some of our party ordered fillet mignon and some ordered salmon; both were well prepared and delicious. Several ordered pasta and thought it was good, but not special. Don't forget the gelato; I chose a scoop of creme brulee with toffee, and a scoop of caramel cashew crunch-Fab!!! Service was great."

  • "We were there for an early dinner to celebrate our son's graduation from University of Delaware, so the whole place, like the town itself, was packed. The food was very good, although pricy, but the service was a little chaotic. They'd obviously brought in extra staff for the weekend, but they seemed to be tripping over themselves, and frequently forgot things. They also have an excellent Gelato Station, so there were people coming in and out just to buy ice cream, hence the name of the restaurant. We all had gelato for dessert, and were not disappointed."

  • "Once a favorite, this restaurant is not so upscale as it used to be. We ordered a bottle of wine from the specials: there was none left at 7:30 pm. We asked for a comparable bottle and were told that the refrigerator was broken, none of the whites were cold. Our server was pleasant and apologetic, if not helpful. We each ordered pasta: beautifully presented, but received about 8oz pasta with less than 2 oz meat/fish/vegetables. The sauces were very good. We sat in a booth: the wall had dried food spots on it. We are sorry to see these lapses."
