  • Excellent food; irritating inattention to requests

We love Caffe Gelato. The food is outstanding - we have never had a bad meal here - and in nice weather the patio dining option is lovely. The gelato is as good as any we had in Italy. However - when one makes a reservation using Open Table and submits a request for a particular server, it apparently is ignored. An acquaintance of mine works there and when we make our reservation using OT we always ask for her - but never get her. Well, I have now learned the secret as to why: you have to ask the hostess. I find that irritating - I do not have this problem with any of the other restaurants who book reservations through OT. That is why it only got 4 stars overall. I would also have rated the ambiance higher except for the screaming toddler at the table next to us. When I am paying $29 for an entrée, I would like to have a more serene dining experience. I understand that a screaming toddler is not Caffe Gelato's fault, but ir definitely detracted from what was otherwise a very nice experience. (That's the reason for the 4 starts for ambience).

We made reservations through Opentable, and we were a few minutes late, but that was no problem and they seated us within three minutes. We had the antipasti, a nice variety of interesting tastes and textures. My wife had the special which was pecan encrusted Scottish salmon, and it was excellent. I had lamb chops which were cooked a perfect medium rare and were very succulent.

Whenever I have friends from out of town and I want them to have a superb dining experience, I always go to Cafe Gelato. The same goes for selecting a dining experience for interviewing job candidates. The service is outstanding (thank you Sonya!), the food always delicious and the wine selection one of the best in the state. The calamari appetizer, scallops main course, and of course gelato for dessert makes for a wonderful meal.

  • Fall Menu Tryout

As Caffe Gelato is my FAVORITE restaurant, I was excited to try out the new Fall menu. I ordered the Lobster Gnocchi and a lemon chicken with linguine dish (that I can't remember the official name of the dish does not bode well). The gnocchi was good, but oddly enough was too much food for an appetizer. I didn't care too much for the chicken dish, which I believe was one of the specials for the day. For dessert I had the White Chocolate Macadamia Sundae. Very good and, as always, Caffe Gelato was more than willing to make changes to accommodate my taste by swapping out the chocolate sauce for caramel sauce. Caffe Gelato is still my FAV, but I will pass on this particular chicken dish if it is offered again.

Service was spotty at best. We were a party of 8 but were eating later in the afternoon when the restaurant was not overly busy. It was the end of parent's weekend at U D so there was still a limited menu. While the food quality is still excellent, we had many unexpected service issues. They forgot to deliver one of our appetizers; they delivered our dinners over a 7 minute span; they delivered our desserts over a 15 minute span; and the last dessert (the Banana Foster) was served cold like they through it together to get it out to the table and it was only delievered after I asked for our check and everyone else had finished their desserts.

Went to Cafe Gelato over the weekend. Loved the ambiance, and the food was good. Unfortunately, while the wait staff is very sweet, they need more training on a few key pts... We were seated very quickly, which was great, but we sat there for about 15-20 min. before anyone took our drink order (or even came to the table)... It was another 10-15 min before bread was brought over. We asked a passing waitress for a vegetarian menu, and then watched as she went to sit at the bar and get herself a soda (I'll assume she forgot). Our waiter knocked over and broke a water glass at our table (which I don't think he realized, ended up on my husband as well as my leather bag)... Nothing was said or done. All small items that added up.

With such a wide variety on the Brunch menu....there is something for everyone! Although it was a very busy morning (Family Weekend at UD) the host and wait staff were under the gun but did their best to keep everyone comfortable. It was extremely crowded but I assume on a 'regular' day/night the atmosphere would have been more relaxed and even romantic in their circular booths. We encouraged our son to return during their 'special' nights (ie: half-priced pasta dishes) for a better dining experience out side of the cafe! To top off the meal, the small cup of gelato was perfect! Everyone wanted to try some and this was the right amount with the berries and granola was a great sweet way to end the meal! We'll be back!

Thanks so much to Caffe Gelato for my birthday present! I received a coupon in the mail and invited a girlfriend to join me for dinner. On a Monday night, the place was predictably quiet, and the hostess offered to seat us in a section that was otherwise empty. We opted to wait for a table that was a little more congenial, which was not a problem. We had terrific $5 martinis at the bar (Monday night special) then sat down to really delicious dinners. The sea scallops were absolutely perfect, and my friend very much enjoyed her fettucine. We shared gelato for dessert (how could we not?) and were pleasantly surprised at the bill.

We have been coming here for years, but probably won't again for brunch. The hot chocolate, tasted like it had been watered down. They didn't ask how I wanted my steak for my eggs mignon. It's a good thing I'm ok with well done, because that's how it came. Service was good - they did accommodate a request for sauteed spinach made because the menu didn't mention the salad. My husband's crepes were overstuffed with whipped ricotta, he expected it would be flavored, but it wasn't. We asked that our potatoes be extra crispy - they weren't even slightly crispy. The last straw however, was the moldy strawberry that was arranged on the edge of my husband's plate. How you can fan out berries and not see a big moldy spot is beyond me.

Went out for a work dinner and one person who arrived early went to the bar for a cocktail. After a few minutes, a few guys came to the bar and the bartender waited on them first since he knew them. We then sat down for dinner and our drink orders were taken promptly. Then took ten minutes for the waiter to take our food order. As for the food, most of the dishes had small portion sizes even the side salads. I did not care for the Tortellini, it had a strange taste to it. One person ordered steak that was well done vs. medium. We all ordered gelato which was the best part of the experience. For the amount of money for the dishes, I expected better quality, service, and portion sizes.

With a reservation, waited 15 minutes to be seated. By the time the waitress arrived and took our order, we had passed the 7 o clock hour, which doubled the price of our app and drinks (as we found out when the check arrived). The soup was out of a can. Three small scallops - insufficient. Steak charred on outside and blue in the middle. Gelato was not the best either. Long waits between courses. Waitress hustled though, so not her fault. And, they automatically pick up your email from OT, so start spamming you two days later. Unsubscribe!

I really enjoy Caffe Gelato, though sometimes it's a bit like Halloween: Trick or Treat! This past visit was definitely more treat than trick. We were on time for our reservation, but our table wasn't ready. The hostess made a great service recovery by offering us (party of three) one of the booths. We opted to wait. Food was good. The veal shank was bland, while the sirlion tip tortellini was great, and the lamb sirloin was out of sight! Wow! Service was slow, but that had to do more with the large party seated next to us than our server. She was VERY friendly and helpful. We will be back!

We have frequented Caffee Gelato many times over the past years and have had good food, but this meal was disappointing. As we were seated my husband noticed a used dirty plate that was still on the table. The San Pellegrino was served warm, and fresh mozzarella was missing from a salad that I ordered. The prices are too high end for this quality and type of service.

Grandma ordered the crab & mascarpone ravioli. It was tasty but didn't appear to have much crab in it. This dish was also described as being served with asparagus tips -- unfortunately the asparagus tips were M.I.A. I ordered the scallops with risotto. It was yummy, an excellent portion size, and quite enjoyable. We asked about details regarding an upcoming menu special and had to follow-up with the server to get the information we requested. The server brought us someone else's check in addition to our own. The service was very good, but the extra details were a bit lacking tonight -- not the usual for Caffe Gelato.

We've visited before but this was the first time I've tried the gluten-free pasta - it was delicious! I've tasted many different GF foods and this was by far the only time I truly didn't think about any difference in taste. Service and ambience were great as usual, the selection of wines by the glass was superb. And to top off the meal - a homemade peach cobbler made from Milburn's peaches... our meal couldn't have been any better. Note: A great location on Main Street offers the opportunity to people-watch if you sit outside.

My husband and I were seated fairly close to the bar this time. It was a Friday night but there was only a slight bit of extra noise compared to the usual atmosphere which is quiet and intimate. I ordered the rib eye special for last week instead of my usual filet. It matched the many recommendations. My husband's filet was as usual. The bruschetta has been tweaked. We don't know what was changed but it was even better than our last visit. Our waiter was speedy but not intrusive. This will always be my birthday dinner as far as I can see.

Had dinner last week (August 2014). My husband and I both ordered a Caesar salad and we both thought it was one of the best we'd ever had! We also both ordered the ribeye special -- fine but not great. My steak was rare even though I ordered it medium well. Our cocktails were also unimpressive. Service was good, except at the end of the meal, when we felt like our waiter had disappeared and we had to wait a very long time to get the check. Our daughter's children's-sized meal was very generous and included a scoop of gelato, which she loved!

I've been to Cafe Gelato many time and it's always good. I do have to say the last time my Filet Mignon was burnt. I asked for medium well as I always do, but this time it was just plain burnt. I should of complained immediately, but I was on a time constraint and needed to keep the dinner moving along. I cut off a large porition of the meat to get rid of the burnt flavor. Usually the food is very good - this time not so much.

We had dinner at Cafe Gelato to celebrate our anniversary. The restaurant was very noisy at 7:00 on a Wednesday night. Our dinners were OK but not as good as we anticipated based on some of the reviews and the prices. One of us order the filet cooked medium but it was over cooked. The other had a pasta dish which was good, but not excellent. We might go back for lunch, but will not probably go back for dinner.
