Diner Reviews
  • "I've been coming to this restaurant for decades. The food is reliably tasty, fresh, and always a good deal. I especially like their boar. The service is a bit slow sometimes when it's busy (ie. when they're packed before the symphony, ballet, jazz performance or opera), but normally they're attentive without being fussy. They also don't freak out if we want to eat "family style" and ask for the entrees to be served in the middle of the table to be shared. The wine list is great, too."

  • "Haven't been here for quite a while, and was pleasantly surprised at the very good food, service, and prices. They have a special going for dinner which includes anything on the appetizers, and main courses menu plus house wine(red or white) for $35. They also have specials nightly. It's not easy to find a restaurant like this so close to the venues near the Civic Center."

  • "very convenient for Civic Center events but not exceptional for food or ambience. the charm and variety of the old location is missing."

  • "My partner and I were very disappointed with the food. It all seemed to be reheated, including the pasta. the bread was like cardboard as were the 2 breadsticks. I couldn't eat my food and took it to go and left it outside for anyone whom might be interested. Nothing stands out except mediocrity. We won't go back."

  • "this is a quick place to get an early evening dinner. The menu is not overwhelming."

  • "We hadn't been to Delle Stelle in several years and it is still good. We had dinner following a Sunday matinee performance at the SF Jazz Center. We were early and the restaurant wasn't super busy. My husband had the cinghiale with polenta, delicious and really enough for two. I had ravioli. The sauce was creamier than I imagined but not overwhelming. The best of the evening was the service. Our server was attentive and charming without being intrusive. We had a pleasant, quite and relaxing dinner, and I'm trying to remember why we haven't gone there more often."

  • "This resturant has good Italian comfort food. Speedy service, especially if one going to performance in the area. Don't overlook this gem."

  • "We have been to Caffe Delle Stella regularly before an event in Civic Center. The food is consistently good and enough variety that all are happy. Wine is also good and the glasses are not overpriced, which is rare. We were seated at a table where we could hear and we appreciate that. We'll definitely return."

  • "Great table, excellent waiter, delicious food, good wine and reasonable prices. What else can you ask?"

  • "The soup (poppa pomodoro) and the wild boar with polenta were great. Really large serving of boar, I had to take half of it home. The service was a little spotty; we had three different servers. The first two were a bit overloaded and forgot our request for different water. The third was more attentive. About that water: seems like the only choices are SF tap water and SF tap water run through a soda machine and served in a fancy bottle. There is a chlorine taste and the carbonation just makes it worse. We could not drink it. No Pellegrino available. Had a glass of the daily special Italian red wine. Very good. We'd go back but I hope they fix the water situation."

  • "A litle taste of Italy is what awaits at Caffe Delle Stelle. The wait staff is friendly and helpful and the menu provides unique options for everyone. Breads with a tangy dipping sauce start your dining adventure. If you like food that is tasty but uncomplicated, then this is your place. The wild board stew is wonderful, especially on a bed of freshly made polenta. This is one of the few local dining spots where you can hold a conversation and actually hear everyone in your party. Yet, there is a feeling of private dining. It is a great dining spot before symphony, opera or jazz."

  • "Have patronized this restaurant for years. Am always greeted warmly and receive fine service, even when they are "snowed" before/after the symphony or opera (from which the restaurant is a couple of blocks).. Every morsel of food is perfection (or they don't serve it). Interesting but reasonable wine list. The zabaione dessert was ethereal. Pasta is always fresh and delectable. Even the coffee is fantastic! My friend and I dined for 3 hours the other evening, looking out the large windows as the street scene and enjoying the fine food and service. As the granddaughter of a professional baker and restauranter, I'm picky and know what I'm talking about!"

  • "We've been going to Caffe Della Stella for years and returned this time for a pre-show dinner. The ambience is lovely and our sever was most attentive and able to take care of multiple tables easily. The food was good and certainly a great value for the price. We had mussels, the crepe special, the risotto (extra good - seafood) and a salad and shared the food. The wines are reasonably priced - we'd love to be able to taste a few more choices before betting on a bottle. We did choose a good one. Despite the timing of our dinner (early diners trying to eat and be out by 7:30), the staff gave us the time to enjoy our meal, delivered food hot and sequenced properly and made the experience great. We'll be back for sure."

  • "We made reservations and were a little early. We were immediately seated by a friendly waiter. Good table. The food was excellent and the service too. We would go there again. It is also very handily located when you go to the symphony, the jazz club, ballet and opera."

  • "Even after 15 years, this place continues to offer quality, tasty dishes at affordable prices. Pork ravioli, rosemary zucchini crepes and tiramisu were highlights. The dipping sauce for the bread is still the same great stuff, and service was friendly. I just wish there was a better interior ambiance -- it's too bright, no tablecloths on our table, and the place is usually 2/3 empty with no one at the bar either. Given its location, it should be hopping."

  • "The ratings for Caffe Delle Stelle were good on Open Table, and I was looking for an Italian restaurant in the city. Not one other table was occupied when we showed up for 6 pm reservation, but host attempted to seat us at a small table for two. We requested to be reseated at a larger table and were. The lentil soup was disappointing, but white bean was delicious. Lots of fresh, organic, local ingredients. The butternut squash ravioli was very flavorful, and the New Zealand snapper was amazing. The server was quite knowledgeable about the wines and food offerings."

  • "Restaurant was wonderful. They had no record of my reservation. This was in spite of the fact that I received a reminder the day before from Open Table. We managed to get a table anyway even though it was a busy night. From now on I will simply make reservations by calling the restaurant directly."

  • "1) Ordered what it was said to be sea bass on the menu. It looked and tasted like sole to me. As a lot of other restaurants do, it cheats the patrons by presenting the cheap sole as sea bass, ling cod or halibut. Second, the amounts of batter, pesto sauce and oil used were way too much for the small fillet of fish on my dish. The price was $24. 2) The other entree we ordered was boar. It did not taste good to me. Its price was $22."

  • "This was our first time dining here. Had wanted to try it for sometime and well worth it. Will be back. Had the flatbread and guest had the risotto with seafood. Both were very well prepared. Salads were just the right amount. The wait staff were engaging, liked that. The hostess was very engaging and really made the atmosphere for the evening."

  • "The restaurant is too small to accommodate large groups and it gets very loud. you are in tight quarters. Service was very slow when we went there, before a performance, and the waitress walked by several times and did not check on us, or apologize for the wait. We had been there before and noticed that this time, it was so loud and service was slow. The food was good and it sure was a lively place."

  • "I wanted a traditional Italian restaurant with high quality meats, pastas, oils, breads and vegetables. The menu fit the bill. Great service, great beef carpacchio (really great) appetizer. My entree was really good - pork stuffed ravioli with a rich mushroom sauce. My brothers gnocchi was not so good, it was strange actually. It had figs and a sweet sauce that didn't really mesh with the earthiness of the potato. I think that when we asked the waitress for some direction, and she said it was all good, she might have elaborated on the special that he selected either by saying not everyone likes it, or it isn't traditional, or it is sweet ..... and he would have ordered something else. I will go back again."

  • "This is a very pleasant restaurant. The setting is lovely, decorated with obvious care. We were greeted appropriately and served courteously, but from there service slowed almost to a standstill. Our impression is that the server covered too many tables. The salad and first course were good and we were impressed. The secondi (entrees) were lackluster and uninspired. We may have hit them on an off night, but that was not my impression. There are too many standout restaurants nearby for us to want to give them a second try."

  • "Caffe Delle Stelle has a rather cozy feel to it. It isn't very big but I think that's one of the things I liiked about it. The food was good and the service was excellent. There were several items on the menu I would have liked to try, but I guess it will have to wait until I eat there again."

  • "Had eaten there twice before and enjoyed it but was very disappointed this time. The service was poor........they forgot our appetizer. We had asked for olive oil with our bread and never got it. They never asked if we wanted a refill of our bread or wine. The food was mediocre at best. The veal was not thin enough nor tender enough and the lasagna was a small portion and was just OK. The ambience needs help. They need to place tablecloths on all their tables and not just the ones at the window. The rose on each table should have been placed in a bud vase and not a water glass. There should be a candle on each table and turn down the lights a bit. Overall disappointed in the service, food and ambience."

  • "Nice little Italian restaurant perfect for post performances. Wait staff was friendly and accomodating. Every dish was excellent including the table bread with the peppernade spread. Starter dishes were grilled baby squid on mashed potato topped with a green sauce and pork meatballs with cheese. Note: use the bread to soak up the sauces! The brown rice risotto with seafood- shrmp, calamari, fish, tasted as if the rice was cooked in shellfish stock, almost like a paella, very satisfying. For dessert the zabaione with biscotti was light and a pefect finish to the meal. Note 2: each table comes with a comlimentary bottle of fizzy water. With pleasant service and great food, it is now my destination spot for post performance dining."

  • "We opted to split the salad, so ordered it for 2. Plate of caesar was delivered to the table. We used our bread plates for our salad. Later, two tables over, I noticed that the couple was served two plates for serving their salad. Yikes. Guess we fell off the grid. We made do. Sole dish was tasty, husband tried the sea bass."
