Food tasted frozen. Our Panini tasted similar to Stoufers but not quite as good. Burger was overcooked/dry. Arancini were good. We had to ask our hostess to find our waitress to take our order and give us the check. Sometimes this is understandable but the restaurant was not busy.

A decent evening with food that was fine. When ordered gelato for dessert, there were no spoons available and were given forks and straws instead. Thankfully my guests were a fun bunch who took the whole event in stride.

Cafeteria was just okay - very average. We expected more from a new restaurant on Newbury street. The fish was overcooked and cold, portions were small, and the service was very average. The one good thing was the apple crisp, but we decided they must not have made that themselves because it was really tasty.

I am really excited about this new addition to the neighborhood. Unlike the previous few restaurants at this location- Cafeteria actually gets it right. The decor is new and works well for the space, the food is really quite good and the the staff, while a little busy causing a slow meal, were pleasant and got everything right. They also have a fun drink menu. This restaurant also has outdoor seating right on Newbury which makes for great people-watching.

After two tries to get a medium rare tenderloin, I had to give up and eat elsewhere. Calamari appetizer was also a disappointment (overcooked). Dinner companion's veal was just okay. I think there are serious problems in the kitchen as the wait for the food was long. Waiter was apologetic but didn't seem surprised with food going back. At the table next to us, the gentleman received his entree 5 mins before his dinner companion.

Service was ok, we waited for what seemed a long time to get our wine. The food was very tasty but portions were not great. My husband was still hungry when he finished his. He ordered the Sea Bass I think. We have coffee and the chocolate dessert and both were delicious. Overall it was ok, if I was going back to Newbury street and couldn't get in elsewhere I'd go back but I wouldn't make a special trip just to go there.

  • I've tried this restaurant
    OpenTable Diner Since 2007
    Dined on 5/19/2008
I've tried this restaurant twice, because I'd heard that it was run by the same people that had the Armani Cafe, which I always enjoyed. Unfortunately, the food does not seem to be as good, and the ambiance is pretty bad. The tables outside are cramped and too close together (they seated five of use, one in a wheelchair, on what was basically a two-top). When we had dinner indoors, it was very noisy, and we were seated on very high chairs with broken footrests, so our legs were dangling. We moved to another table, but that was slanting toward me, and soon after a distracting projection of "Dancing with the Stars" came up on the mirrored wall that my shoulder was against. It just doesn't have the class of Armani cafe, unfortunately.

It has a nice vibe. The staff are helpful and provide great service. The food is simple, but satisfying and well worth checking out. The outdoor dining experience is really nice and the interior is relaxing and comfortable. Above all, the food is inexpensive and it's in a key location on Newbury.

Frustrated that we had a 7:30 reservation and did not get seated until after 8:00. No offer to buy us drinks or appetizer from host/manager for the delay. They were out of 2 of the menu items, seabass and gnocci and it was just after 8pm on Sat. Waitress took our order then had to come back 2 minutes later b/c she did not remember what we ordered. Service overall needs a lot of work. The food was good and the outdoor seating looked nice and in the warm weather would be good.

Service was terrible. The waitress would disappear for 15-20 minutes through out our dinner. Half our party was left downstairs for over 45 minutes after being told that the others had not arrived yet. Portion sizes were laughably small. Honestly, the only reason I would go back to Cafeteria is to sit outside- and Stephanies has MUCH better food and Kashmir has a better ambiance. These will continue to be my choices for outdoor dining on Newbury.

The basement location is very cozy and seems like a fun place to hang out. The car is rather small though. Food wasn't special and the portions are rather small. The dish (puncetta with carbonara) was too salty. Good cocktail choices. I found it odd that there were 2 servers. One would actually serve while the other one just followed. Maybe they were doing some training session. It was strange and slightly uncomfortable.

It took about 20 minutes for someone to come to our table, even though we ate at 4pm and the restaurant was empty. We ordered 2 appetizers, 2 entrees, and 2 iced teas. The iced teas came in tiny glasses and we had to yell across the room for a different waitress to refill our drinks. Every single piece of food was bland. The prices are high for such poor quality food. I don't think they even used salt. Service was outrageously slow, and we only saw our waitress when she took our order, and when she finally brought our bill. The decor looks very cheap. The only thing good about the restaurant was the location, but I would rather have good food and/or service.

Our first impression of the restaurant was an overwhelming smell of stale cigarette smoke, although we were only 2 or 3 other parties in the restaurant I don't feel that we were given particularly outstanding service. Perhaps a bit unkind--the staff did not look 'Newbury St.'if this is a restaurant that is trying to brand itself as chic and trendy then the staff should dress a bit more appropriately--even just an all black uniform would've been better than all the polyester being worn that night. The menu felt like it was aiming for the lowest common denominator and didn't have anything that was particularly noteworthy. The food was fine but again nothing noteworthy.

It took about 10 min before our server came over to our table. When she came over to the table she told us she would be right with us tot take our orders. We thought it would be our drink order, but NO she was taking our food orders; so we order our drinks with the food. What I wanted was not available that night… When the food came out most people at our table including myself thought the food was terrible. I got the Kobe beef burger and it was over cooked and to be honest didn’t even taste like Kobe Beef. The temperature in the restaurant was very hot, which made it uncomfortable… Overall terrible experience and would not recommended.

Food was good. I would definitely recommend the "Cafeteria Bowl" which was a huge and yummy drink the size of a scorpion bowl but much more delicious. The only complaint I had was that our table was not ready for about 20-30 minutes after we got there which was frustrating but the hosts handled it well, though the upstairs was nearly empty once we were seated.

The look of this place is nice with clean lines. That's the only good thing I can say. The service was horrible. The food was worse. The drinks were watered down.I eat out all the time in Boston, and have not ever written a bad review. However, this was the WORST meal I have ever had.It took 45 minutes to get a cocktail, and I had to wave our waitress down. Then an hour in I had to ask if we could have water. Our waitress was a nice girl, just not good at her job.My friend and I ordered drinks, we liked the first round, the second round we got completely different drinks. Not good ones.Mine tasted like gatorade. My pasta recommended by the waitress, penne arrabiata. This was Shaw's penne overcooked with prego pizza sauce and pepper. JUST AWFUL!

Everyone in my party enjoyed their food. The service was great. The meal was well paced and reasonably priced for what you received, however the one comment from a few people in my party was that the serving size was small. I HATE the ridiculous, classless name, but was hoping the food would overcome it. It didn't. I can't even imagine this restaurant can survive on Newbury Street, what with all the much better restaurants nearby (Abe and Louie's, etc.) Nothing wowed me at all, and I imagine they can't possibly draw in enough business to make that restaurant profitable. Especially with what must be a huge overhead given it's prime location. I give it until August, or perhaps December to fold up and go by the way of its predecessor restaurants. The name can ONLY hurt it.

I had requested a booth or seating on a banquette as I always do and usually get, but not this night. We were seated at a tiny table next to the wall which makes the space even smaller and cramped for my husband. There was a bottle of water on the table yet we were never offered a glass of water. The timing was off on the meal, we ordered an appetizer to share, two salads, and two entrees. The runner brought the appetizer and both salads at the same time, and because the table was so small we had to send the salads back while we ate the appetizer first. The food was delicious although the spinach and mushroom side was too salty. The cocktails were just okay as I had two and barely felt a buzz - unusual. The noise level was too loud.
