I am always excited to dine at Cafe Vicino. My wife and I stopped for dinner before the Cirque Dreams Holidaze show. I had the wonderful cheese ravioli with browned butter sage, which was delicious, and my wife had shellfish and pasta. After, we shared a flaky apple tart with rich coffee. Being out of downtown, parking is easy at Cafe Vicino--always a delight!

We hadn't been here for a few years so a birthday occasion prompted us to come here. The menu hasn't changed much since the restaurant opened and there's some dishes that remain because obviously they are big sellers. I mention particularly the chicken with grappa sauce and fried polenta---it's still excellent a fairly large portion with wing bone attached crisp on the outside, moist on the inside. The canellonis stuffed with spinach and Italian sausage and then topped with a light tomato sauce are another popular favorite. The chocolate hazelnut torte and croissant bread pudding were a perfect finish to the meal. We were here on a Wednesday, and when we left the restaurant all the tables except one were filled.

I'm a fan of Richard's Cafe Vicino. However recently I was disappointed in the appetizer of 'Sauteed Clams and Calamari'. So few pieces of calamari & miniscule; the garlic pieces were bigger. The amount of clams were inadequate; there were 4. Perhaps the small quantity of seafood was simply underscored by the large portion of huge chunks of celery; not good. Very surprised at this 'offering' I ordered the 'Fried Oysters and Pork Belly' and, while quite tasty, it was more than enough food for 2 people. Too much food on the plate. The side, Kale sformato, was heavy, tasteless, & not right in my opinion. The service is stellar and I will return. Wondering though if my meal would have been better had Richard been cooking?!

Long overdue in reconnecting with dear friends - always on different tracks and timeframes - until Saturday. A quick, last minute invite via Facebook Messenger identified mutual availability - and in close enough proximity to both of us was Cafe Vicino. Despite the pouring rain, we were warm, dry and completely satisfied. Great food - perfect wine, thanks to my husband, and scrumptious appetizers, thanks to our friend's quick picks while the rest of us debated the options. The guys had the rib eye - an infrequent guilty pleasure for each; the cannelloni and pork chop dishes were rich and flavorful. Best of all - we picked up where we left off and enjoyed sharing fond memories and making new ones - happily at Cafe Vicino! We'll be back!

Cafe Vicino has been one of my favorite places to take out of town friends. Unfortunately, my visitors and I were disappointed with our food at our last visit. We order several appetizers and share them. An old favorite, seared scallops, was served on a sweet potato puree that was so salty as to be inedible. The shrimp skewers were overcooked. The radicchio was incredibly strong and bitter, completely overwhelmed the smoked trout in the same dish. My friends have tasked me with finding a new venue for their next visit... Service was impeccable and atmosphere pleasant, but food not up to par. Lemon-infused olive oil was delightful, however.

Café Vicino is a favorite for special occasions. Our most recent visit was for dinner before the philharmonic. The service is outstanding and the food was terrific. I'm a fan of the chicken. It's actually very rich with the grapa sauce. The polenta is a nice touch.

I know I can count on the food at Cafe Vicino being outstanding, but this time, the service was the best we've had. Outside of them not having a table at our reserved time (I realize this is hard to control but it still bugs me), everything else was flawless. They allowed us to drop off a bottle of wine early so it could be opened and breathe a bit before dinner, and they decanted it for us when we sat down. Our server was very friendly and allowed the right amount of time between each stop at the table to see how we were doing. Each course was well-presented, delicious, and delivered with perfect timing.

Although the reservation was made for Mr. Breitigam, I, Richard Schellhaas made the selection. I have been a member of Open Table in San Diego, CA. for several years, thus it was a pleasant surprise to find the organization alive and well in Boise where I now spend part of my year. Cafe Vicino was an even more pleasant surprise. The food was very well prepared and nicely presented . The sevice was responsive and understated. It was an excellent dining experience. I enjoy ethnic dining, and Meditteranean cuisine most of all; so finding a highly competent restaurant of this ilk in Boise, is one of the highlights of my residency here.

My food was fine, if not scintillating, but my friend discovered dirt and a huge clump of mud in her caesar salad. That was troublesome enough, but the waiter didn't seem overly concerned, made only a mild comment 'would you like something else?' then ignored us, and no one from the kitchen came out to apologize or to try to make amends. What happened to service? Most restaurants would have at least the salad chef or the sous chef at the table and would try to right things and offer major apologies. We used to like Café V., but will not be rushing back.

Cafe Vicino has always been our go-to place for special occasions. This time, though, it just seemed to be missing some of the things we always enjoy when we go there. The service was friendly but didn't seem as knowledgeable as in the past. After we finished our appetizers, our used silverware was not replaced. Our server occasionally stopped by to ask if everything was okay, but it seemed like more of an obligation than something he cared about. The menu is getting a bit same old, same old, and I think from now on I will avoid the pasta dishes -- they just aren't that great. Finally, decaf coffee -- although freshly made -- was undrinkable.

Originally I am from Alaska thus I am very picky about the fish I order. I am hestitant to order seafood inland for fear of lack of freshness. My fear was definitely unfounded here! The halibut tasted like it was fresh caught that day. The preparation was light and flavorful! It was cooked to perfection, which means it was not over cooked or raw. The Caesar salad dressing had the right balance of anchovy and lemon. The croutons were fresh and the lettuce crisp. For dessert we shared three options. Lemon cheesecake with a salted caramel topping that was excellent! The second berry tart was good and the third lemon pound cake I would skip in the future. It was dry and near flavorless. Overall excellent! I will definitely return!

Cafe Vicino never fails to impress. It has an elegant but relaxed atmosphere, and the staff are friendly and professional. We love that certain favorites (the gorgonzola stuffed figs and the halibut with brown butter ravioli) were still on the menu since our last visit! But we also enjoyed some new things and nightly specials. We particularly loved the beet salad and the mushroom, greens and corn pudding vegetarian entree- both of which we had not previously tried. We splurged and each got a different dessert, since they all sounded too good to pass up. It was the highlight of our trip home after living out of the country for a year.

The food was flavorful, the service was attentive (yet they did give myself and my date a stink eye with our lack of dressed up or high end apparel) and the ambiance was that of a stuck up retirement home. It has a long wine list and if you are willing to pay over $100 for a bottle of wine enjoying it in a tucked away hole in the wall cafe, next to the local co-op, then by all means I can imagine this would be a great place for you. It attempts to bring in a European cafe feel yet I feel as though it is uninviting and rather stuffy for a downtown Boise, Idaho restaurant.

Celebrated a birthday at Cafe Vicino. We requested a specific table on Open Table and happily got it. Dinner was very good. I always order salad as they are always very good. This time we had beet and house salads. One in our party had the soup of the day...bean. Our table ordered halibut, pork and a mushroom dish...all were excellent. We shared a berry tart. We ordered a bottle of pinot gris that we really enjoyed...nice selection of bottles under $40 which I appreciate. Service is always good. This is one of my favorite places for dinner in Boise. While we didn't order pasta this time...I often do as they have a great selection.

We we arrived, we were a little sketchy because of the location in the shopping center. Once we were inside our concerns were relieved because the decor was nice. They offered dining outside but because it was super hot that day we decided to eat inside. Overall the food we ordered was delicious and there were no complaints with the food, wine selection and local brew. The cold soup I had (suppose to be served cold) was delicious. If I am ever in the area again I wouldn't hesitate to go back.
