Diner Reviews
  • "took over 20 minutes for them to take our order and give us water. then took another 20 for them to bring the coffee and drinks we ordered. no attention from waitstaff at all. they must have been understaffed. food was delicious though, when it finally came"

  • "The onion soup was great. So was the tuna tartar appetizer. We also loved the burger. The $1.00 oysters are a bargain when available."

  • "We chose this place for $1 oyster happy hour. We love the Mermaid Inn and have been there but decided to try this place for something different. Unfortunately, after our first dozen oysters were served they ran out! The rest of the food was ok but didn't seem worth the price. Our bill was $117 and we left hungry. A cheap glass of wine is $9.00, which was surprising for happy hour, so we felt for those prices you can either go somewhere less expensive or around the corner to a local wine bar with better service. If you are looking for happy hour special with oysters check out the Mermaid Inn instead, as they have extensive and delicious happy hour specials ($6.00 wine, $3.00 shrimp/avocado sliders) and you won't leave hungry."

  • "We live around the corner and this was our second visit to Cafe Tallulah. Without a doubt the Braised Lamb should be rated five stars!! It was much better than all the other dishes we had. On my last visit we had Bouillabaisse and the Lamb. The bouillabaisse was alright compared to the lamb. This visit we tried the Coq au Vin and the Lamb. The Coq au Vin was alright BUT the lamb outstanding. I like the tables in the windows. It is a great place to watch the world walk by."

  • "I was on a first date with a guy. You know how that is. What are we gonna talk about....will there be gaps in the conversation..will I like him..blah blah. Thanks to Cafe Tallulah it didn't matter who I was with. It was romantic and the dinner was wonderful. I had roasted chicken. I was succulent and juicy. We could talk about how wonderful the food was and it helped with first date jitters. I highly recommend this wonderful wonderful restaurant. Guy was great too ..by the way."

  • "Much too noisy, and impossibly dark I could not see my food. I hesitate to return"

  • "Food excellent but service lacking at lunch. Water boy great. Waitress nowhere to be found. Waited 45 minutes for waitress to get our dessert order corrected. Have dined at Cafe Tallulah a few times before for dinner. Lunch service seems slow and disorganized."

  • "The food was tasty, service was prompt, and cocktails were imaginative. Thoroughly enjoyed the experience and would definitely go back. Prices were not cheap, but worth the cost."

  • "I get why people are drawn here. Great space, good decor, but the food was marginal and the service was unorganized and rude. I'd rather pay a bit more and get gorgeous food and service at Cafe Lux."

  • "The menu selection is relatively limited and thus precludes dining here on a regular basis. The presentation of the tortellini is unnecessarily dramatic -- a small portion in the center of a huge bowl. The tortellini pasta is uneven -- one night it was perfect, and another night it was definitely under boiled. The waiters are friendly and attentive."

  • "Husband and I had a great dinner and lovely time Exceeded expectations! French Onion soup was delicious as was baked chicken, flatbread and flourless chocolate cake Go, enjoy!"

  • "Went with a group of six partly because of the location, but we all enjoyed our food and found the ambience to be just perfect!"

  • "Nice, warm ambience on a cold winter night. Cocktails were great as were the noshes. Coq Au Vin was on the dry side. Profiteroles were long on ice cream and short on profiterole. No Port on the menu . . . wha???? Service was extremely attentive. Probably should have been the cocktail/nosh stop before heading to Café Lux. or Bar Boulud."

  • "We had a delightful Sunday evening dinner here. The food was very good, but the wine list was terribly high-priced- there were no real choices under $50 per bottle and the bottles in the $50-70 range were unimpressive. Service was friendly and professional."

  • "The food at Cafe Tallulah at lunch time was disappointing. I went for the Fashion Week Prix Fixe Lunch. A flat bread 'pizza' was undercooked and uninteresting. The chicken paillard was simply okay but the roasted vegetables that came along with it were inedible. Finally, there was a mini Creme Brulee for dessert which was the highlight of the meal. The service on the other hand was very good. Just wish the food matched the welcome of the waitress. Oh! and to top it all off, I got a message from Open Table saying "We missed you at Tallulah" because they'd not even acknowledged my reservation."

  • "I like the IDEA of this restaurant bu the food didn't have much flavor and the wait staff seem a bit inexperienced. It could just have been an off night but our table was a bit disappointed."

  • "food was excellent and perfect for a winter night. great ambience. wine a bit pricey but very good. waiter had an attitude but we didn't have any real issue. will definitely go back."

  • "Well-designed, well-managed new French bistro. Food is excellent with the usual French dishes, such as mussels, cassoulet etc. We were there on a Saturday night. The place was crowded and hectic but service kept up with demand. We plan to go back."

  • "This is a really nice spot. The food was interesting and moderately priced. Plenty of sharing sized appetizers and delicious main courses. The service in the restaurant area is much better than at the bar where there is a lot of preening and posing going on, That said, the house cocktails are well made and satisfying. Service at the table was efficient and friendly."

  • "My husband and I were in NYC on business and looked on open table for a good neighborhood restaurant near our hotel. We settled on Cafe Tallulah and are happy we did. The food was terrific (great steak frites), the service attentive and friendly, and the prices reasonable (for NYC!). We'll go back there in a heartbeat the next time we're on the upper west side. This shows why open table is so great--we'd never have found this place without it. Thanks!"

  • "Four of us had a very pleasant meal early on a Sunday evening. It wasn't too crowded and the noise level was moderate so we could have a good conversation. The food and service were fine. It is a fine neighborhood place in a neighborhood with few such."

  • "If you like oysters, it's fine. The rest is kind of average. A forgettable meal."

  • "Went for early NYE celebration with friend. Long wine champagne and cocktail list, enticing menu and appetizers you can enjoy in the bar/lounge...staff not as caring, forever to get their attention but it was NYE...though food totally worth it!"

  • "A new neighborhood place in a busy UWS area. Has a very large bar that is active but not excessively loud. Food good, with some imiginative things on the menu. Our server had a lot of tables to work and managed them well."

  • "Cafe Tallulah is the most recent restaurant at a location where a number of restaurants have failed. This one is a winner and bound to be there for a long time. It's relaxed, friendly, and has an excellent menu.Have been there twice with friends and each of us have been more than pleased with our orders. Plan to make it our Go-To restaurant. Don't tell anyone else. We want to be able to get a table."

  • "The food can be very good but on Saturday night, when it was crowded, nothing was hot. Mussels came without bread--and bread had never been served to our table of 6--without a bowl for shells and no spoon for eating the broth. Also, they would not seat our party of 6 until everyone was there even though we had a reservation, our table was ready and waiting, and the 4 of us who were there wanted to order drinks."
    Dined on 12/21/2013
  • "Though the food was very good,, the service was indifferent and bordering on rude. Further, the seating was cramped, the noise overwhelming and overall, a rather disappointing evening. I will not return."

  • "It seems that this relatively new restaurat has already taken off. Knteresting menu, caaring servce, and wonderfu bar all make for a very enjoyable experience. Add to that a well priced and interesting menu and you a local dining spot that you want to come back to."

  • "My wife and I wanted a quiet place to have dinner before going to a show at Carnegie Hall. We were seated in the back of the enclosed sidewalk cafe. Perfect, even when the loud family sat down at a long table behind us. It was a NY Show with our dessert. When we eat out we like something we don't make at home. She had the BRANZINI. Flavorful, but cut up in filets for presentation. Most places will either show you the fish before cooking and/ or ask if you want the head with the meal and serve it whole. The service was appropriate. We did not feel ignored or bothered. Dessert is not their strong point. My Beef Bourguignon was very good. It melted in my mouth with a rich sauce that complimented the meat."

  • "Looking at last minute for dinner spot on Friday after Thanksgiving on upper west side and found Café Tallulah on OpenTable. We were surprised and delighted with the experience. Would definitely return. Engaging 'bistro' menu with good choices. Moderate prices - most entries in lower $20's. Wine list had broad range. Service was attentive. The place had a very appealing feel: warm, subdued lighting but not dark, 'buzzing' but not noisy. One entre should have been warmer when delivered, but overall only a slight detraction to an experience we would repeat with pleasure and have already recommended to friends."

  • "Second time dining here. Food is great, fresh and tasty but this last time dining here...the service was horrific. We sat down at 6:30 on Friday night after Thanksgiving and the place was empty. Sat around for about 7-10 minutes with no water, no sign of our waiter and no one sitting at the tables around us. Finally we saw the hostess prepping a table for a large party and a waiter helping her. We flagged him over and asked if we could have our waiter/if he was ours and he replied, "I can be". Turns out, he was our waiter and oblivious. Had to ask HIM if there were any specials and had to track HIM down for a second drink throughout dinner. Food is great and a great place for the UWS but be prepared to have horrible service."

  • "Food was great, service was outstanding, I have no complaints and I would recommend this place to anyone. Sarah was our waitress and she did an excellent job. All the bartenders are great too - true mixologists! The ambiance here is fantastic any night of the week but on weekends there's the plus of a downstairs lounge with a pool table and occasional live jazz."
