Diner Reviews
  • "Although my friend said he had heard good things about this restaurant, we could not concur. Hoping for a taste of France, the closest we came was the French speaking gentleman seated next to us. Nice greeting from the hostess, but a little soon to be referred to on first name basis. Offered various versions of water was a nice touch. My Croque Monsieur was a thick, brick of bread, coated with cheese centered with a tiny, basic slice of ham. The requested pomes frites were limp and greasy. My friend said his Tuna Nicoise was equally lackluster. Our server was amiable but a bit overly reserved and never fully engaging. I got the feeling she'd rather be elsewhere. This was a fifty dollar failure."

  • "Great ambience, but it's a bit noisy, even for a Monday evening. Service was very friendly and helpful.... and you gotta have their shrimp salad app. We had friends in from CA. The 16 year-old daughter was quite impressed, shooting every dish with her iPhone. Needless to say all the dishes were well presented. Worth a visit!"

  • "Our second time dining here and we were not disappointed. The cocktail hour oyster special is always a treat and we really appreciate that the chef has not tried to overload the menu. A good selection of appropriate choices, all (so far) well prepared."

  • "Pleasant atmosphere, good food at reasonable New York prices, and friendly service. Great place for Blue Point oysters."

  • "I've eaten here several times and have sometimes ordered the croque monsieur. This time it was awful, Won't order that again!"

  • "This was a nice place to have dinner before a Lincoln Center event: close enough to get there on time yet far enough to "walk off" a meal. One small quibble though. We were given an extremely small round table which made putting dishes down a challenge."

  • "We've been here before; the $1 oysters during the week are a draw for us. The French Bistro food can be a little heavy on a hot day but we do like many of those dishes regardless. And they do a decent job of executing most of the menu's classic offerings. Our only complaint is with the spotty service. I think it is more due to the management of the staff than the individuals. When nobody is quite sure who our server is suppose to be, that's an indication of some poor scheduling. Coordination of getting drinks before food is also a problem. Everyone is friendly and tries hard but that does not always result in efficient service. That said, we will be back, but with a better plan to help them help us."

  • "Service and food was above expectations. My pasta special (bow tie) was perfectly seasoned and the other salads were plentiful and looked delicious. The staff was most helpful."

  • "The setting is 'bistro', with nice wide windows looking out on columbus ve. The food is delicious and the service very charming and attentive."

  • "Gorgeous restaurant, great food, cool vibe. A cross between Balthazar, Elaine's, and Employees Only. Try the tuna tartare, tarte flambé, bouillabaisse, and steak tartare."

  • "Not a good dining experience the night of our daughter's graduation. Food was mediocre at best. The waiter STRONGLY pushed the beef burgunion and my husband said it was horrible. Service was inconsistent."

  • " I have had better meals there in the past. The staff were tentative and orders were confused, food came out cold. "

  • "Really pretty, fun restaurant and the service could not be better. But I'm a coq a vin nut and theirs was not good. Dry, with almost no sauce. "

  • "Since we live a few blocks away, we were eager to find a new favorite place. Alas, this wasn't it. The waiter was inattentive and the food was mediocre. Maybe it was just a bad day. We'll give it another try, and keep our fingers crossed."

  • "Dined at Café Tallulah May 18th. Service was terrible, food was good. Took waitress 20 minutes to take drink/oyster order. Wine came right away but oysters arrived after we had finished drinks. First course arrived before oysters and it was wrong. 10 minutes later oysters arrived in middle of second glass of wine. When the first course arrived, it was wrong again. Entrees were uneventful but very slow in coming. When we finished, waitress said they felt bad and dessert was complimentary. We both ordered dessert - also slow. When the bill came, waitress said only the highest price dessert was comped! What?! We complained to the manager who could care less. We like 3 1/2 hour dinners - but not with awful service. "

  • "We've had Cafe Tallulah on our list to try for a while. We never got around to it until the other night when we saw their sign for $1.00 oysters. That's hard to ignore. But we were more surprised when our meals arrived. The food was surprisingly good for the price. The bouillabaisse was classic. The chicken was moist. The place, though smaller than it looks outside, has a very comfy feel. It was a nice night so they had their windows open to the street but it felt like you were inside, the best of both. The service wasn't perfect, our waitress failed to mention their specials until we heard them announced to our adjoining table. Drink and wine selections were plentiful. Too bad it was half empty on a weeknight, hope they catch on."

  • "Helpful waitstaff and very accommodating. The mussels were fresh and tasty and the steak was cooked right. The frites were crispy. "

  • "This neighborhood gem offers a variety of brunch choices for every appetite. All of our choices were quite delicious, the service was personable and the price was reasonable."

  • "Nice menu, attentive service. The problem still remains that it is very noisy. It would help for the volume of the music to be lowered."

  • "this local place is a great find -- until the buses of tourists, weekend crowds overloaded with strollers pile in. during other times it's a lovely, romantic hang w great coffee, menu, and ambience. Unfortunately, when the crowds pile in, your quiet table for 2 is overpowered by crowded tables for 6+ with kids who generally are permitted to be loud & run around. of course, they're just being kids; yet neither the parents nor the restaurant make any effort in accommodating the other non-youngster-bearing patrons. menu is generally good; brunch menu could use some more choices for eggs, salads, and especially sides. Kitchen backlogs quickly on wknds/busy evenings so be prepared, esp if you've planned to catch a movie or opera afterwards."

  • "Enjoyed this new French-American: French food with American (good NYC) Service. Tables are a bit cramped (a la French Cafe style), but the food was very good, service was attentive enough, and wine list/cocktails all solid. Good place for a neighborhood stop, dinner anytime. It's a bit loud, but if you can score a table by the windows, it blends into the blah blah background common to any restaurant. "

  • "Honored request for "quiet" corner table on a busy Saturday night. Great martinis. Good basic fare like burgers, muscles and frites. friendly service and reasonable prices. "

  • "We were very excited to try this neighborhood spot and were greeted by a very friendly host who sat us at a wonderful table. Then came our waiter five minutes later with a horrible attitude. He didnt answer any of our questions, had our food delivered to the wrong table and got our order wrong. The funny thing is every single other person we spoke to was wonderful. Except our waiter. The food was wonderful and the drinks were great! "

  • "I've been here many times and its become one of my absolute favorites in the neighborhood in the evening but I was very disappointed in the brunch. This was the first time I went for brunch and I found it too pricey for what it was. The Fritatta was very bland and there were no special little extras of anything. "
    Dined on 4/20/2014
  • "Only negatives are that the wine list is over the top pricey, especially considering that the food prices are not unreasonable and the noise level was very, very loud."
    Dined on 4/19/2014
  • "took over 20 minutes for them to take our order and give us water. then took another 20 for them to bring the coffee and drinks we ordered. no attention from waitstaff at all. they must have been understaffed. food was delicious though, when it finally came"

  • "The onion soup was great. So was the tuna tartar appetizer. We also loved the burger. The $1.00 oysters are a bargain when available."

  • "We chose this place for $1 oyster happy hour. We love the Mermaid Inn and have been there but decided to try this place for something different. Unfortunately, after our first dozen oysters were served they ran out! The rest of the food was ok but didn't seem worth the price. Our bill was $117 and we left hungry. A cheap glass of wine is $9.00, which was surprising for happy hour, so we felt for those prices you can either go somewhere less expensive or around the corner to a local wine bar with better service. If you are looking for happy hour special with oysters check out the Mermaid Inn instead, as they have extensive and delicious happy hour specials ($6.00 wine, $3.00 shrimp/avocado sliders) and you won't leave hungry."

  • "We live around the corner and this was our second visit to Cafe Tallulah. Without a doubt the Braised Lamb should be rated five stars!! It was much better than all the other dishes we had. On my last visit we had Bouillabaisse and the Lamb. The bouillabaisse was alright compared to the lamb. This visit we tried the Coq au Vin and the Lamb. The Coq au Vin was alright BUT the lamb outstanding. I like the tables in the windows. It is a great place to watch the world walk by."

  • "I was on a first date with a guy. You know how that is. What are we gonna talk about....will there be gaps in the conversation..will I like him..blah blah. Thanks to Cafe Tallulah it didn't matter who I was with. It was romantic and the dinner was wonderful. I had roasted chicken. I was succulent and juicy. We could talk about how wonderful the food was and it helped with first date jitters. I highly recommend this wonderful wonderful restaurant. Guy was great too ..by the way."

  • "Food excellent but service lacking at lunch. Water boy great. Waitress nowhere to be found. Waited 45 minutes for waitress to get our dessert order corrected. Have dined at Cafe Tallulah a few times before for dinner. Lunch service seems slow and disorganized."

  • "The food was tasty, service was prompt, and cocktails were imaginative. Thoroughly enjoyed the experience and would definitely go back. Prices were not cheap, but worth the cost."

  • "I get why people are drawn here. Great space, good decor, but the food was marginal and the service was unorganized and rude. I'd rather pay a bit more and get gorgeous food and service at Cafe Lux."
    Dined on 3/16/2014
  • "The menu selection is relatively limited and thus precludes dining here on a regular basis. The presentation of the tortellini is unnecessarily dramatic -- a small portion in the center of a huge bowl. The tortellini pasta is uneven -- one night it was perfect, and another night it was definitely under boiled. The waiters are friendly and attentive."

  • "Nice, warm ambience on a cold winter night. Cocktails were great as were the noshes. Coq Au Vin was on the dry side. Profiteroles were long on ice cream and short on profiterole. No Port on the menu . . . wha???? Service was extremely attentive. Probably should have been the cocktail/nosh stop before heading to Café Lux. or Bar Boulud."
