A word from Cafe Spiaggia
As the more casual sibling of renowned Spiaggia, Cafe Spiaggia has come into its own as a favorite dining destination for locals and visitors alike. In an artful, warm setting featuring reproductions of 15th century Italian murals, the contemporary Cafe serves dishes reminiscent of authentic Italian sidewalk eateries and trattorias. Chicago Magazine said, “This stylish Cafe sends out lively versions of regional classics…topnotch handmade pastas, fine main courses, and the best tiramisu and ice creams in town."Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "I was extremely disappointed in Cafe Spiaggia. We invited clients during City Wide International PowWow. We had many choices. We picked this restaurant because we heard great things! One of my colleagues, a Director of Sales, is extremely sensitive to salt. She has major issues when too much salt is used. We specified to the waiter that we did not want our food salted. We understand some salt being used in cooking, but when we have mentioned this in the past, at any restaurant, the chef always accommodates us. In this case it was almost as if the chef deliberately put double the salt in our food. 2 of the entrees were inedible. It was embarrassing, in front of clients, to complain so we just didn't eat our entrees. "

  • "Cafe Spiaggia is consistently enjoyable in every way - great food and service, good wine and a pleasant setting. On our most recent visit, they cheerfully agreed to substitute the sauce from one pasta dish with that of another. Limited wine list, but very good wines by the glass."

  • "Now that Spiaggia is closed for renovations, one must go to the cafe to get what is possibly the best Italian fare in Chicago. Prices are not outrageous, food is carefully and well prepared, it is authentic, wine, as usual in the US, is overpriced, but there are decent Italians for $40-60 (and Barolos for multiples of $100). Service is attentive. Again, they do what goes for "good service" in removing one's plate as long as it looks you're done, instead of politely waiting till everyone is done. They are not reying to rush you, but it feels that way..."

  • "We are so glad we ate here. We were with friends we had not seen for years. We enjoyed a wonderful meal, good wine , great service in a quiet cozy atmosphere. We talked and ate for two hours and never felt rushed. I would eat here again whenever I am in the Chicago loop area. Loved it."

  • "I went to Chicago on a weekend girls getaway. I looked for small but interesting restaurants in the area I was staying. This is a gem. Without a doubt a wonderful experience. Our waiter was so helpful and attentive. He took the time to explain how certain dishes were made and suggested wine pairings. I took his advice and had the Porchetta with a great Montepulciano. It was great. I never felt rushed or pressured. It's times like this that make a person want to return again and again."

  • "We had a wonderful experience on a Saturday afternoon. The service was wonderful. Daniel, was very knowledgable and walked all of table through the menu options. We felt the food was very good and we look forward to going back soon."

  • "Great food but gross bathroom during the renovation. The door did not even have a lock on it."

  • "Our recent visit was a quiet Wednesday, hence the lack of noise. Usually, it is a bit more lively. The food is consistently good, often with a dish so outstanding you swear you'll never eat anywhere else. This week, that dish was the burratta with apples. Wow! We also had the gnocchi, the porchetta and a lovely salad with arugula, pears, and candied almonds. All delicious, but I have to say I'm ready for a spring menu! Service was not as spot-on as usual. Maybe too quiet? Can't wait to go back."

  • "They seem to be operating with a somewhat reduced menu right now while their restaurant next door is being renovated, but they've still got my favorite dish (the wonderful gnocchi) on the menu, so I'm happy. Service, as always, was fabulous. Highly recommended."

  • "Spiaggia Cafe has beend around the Gold Coast neighborhood for more than two decades, and it's still great! The food and service are excellent. The decor is the same as it was at opening, but it's not tired. Without a doubt, you feel as though you're in a great cafe in Rome. Lunch is very pleasant because of all the windows that look out onto bustling Michigan Avenue, despite the fact that Spiaggia Cafe is in an office building. I recommend it with confidence after all these years and am looking forward to the grand re-opening of the Cafe's big brother, Spiaggia."

  • "We had a 6:30 reservation, but we arrived early and were seated at the bar; from our stools we peeked into the busy kitchen and saw all the colorful dishes as they were brought out to the dining room. We ordered drinks and the chicken liver appetizer, which was delicious. For dinner we were seated at a window table overlooking Michigan Avenue. The service was excellent. We will definately go back."

  • "Meh. A real disappointment. Chef needs to do more than just redecorate. Lackluster service, indifferent staff. Food rated only a C. Gummy Bucattini, under sauced. You can only live on a reputation so long. Clearly coasting on the Gold coast."

  • "We return to Spiaggia just about every time we're in Chicago. Never disappointed. Of course the food is great, but being welcomed like old friends and coddled at a quiet table for two by a window overlooking Michigan Avenue is a treat. We will be back."

  • "We had a fabulous time at Cafe Spaggia the other night. The good and wine were fantastic, the ambience was lovely and the service was perfect. My main course turned out to be too spicey for me so that brought me another dish which was delicious! They didn't charge me for my entre or my husband's birthday dessert. His entre was superb. We LOVE your restaurant, our waiter, Dillon, was the best. We can't wait to return for another great dining experience with you."

  • "We recently celebrated our anniversary of our first date at Cafe Spiaggia (we've been together 7 yrs now) as it was the place of our first date. The Cafe has always been our preference over the restaurant as its more casual nature is just more expected for italian dining. As always the food was incredible and the service very attentive. You can never be disappointed by dinner here. Its a great place to entertain or enjoy dinner for two. Of note, the sauces with wild boar/cinghiale are very well done - rich and deep flavors with the expected tastes of the best Italian food."

  • "This was a celebration for my friend's birthday. Neither my friend, my husband nor I like to have the celebration acknowledged. So, Café Spiaggia had to make us happy without knowing about the special occasion. We had a great time and look forward to eating there again and again. We are looking forward to the restaurant reopening, too."

  • "Context- my wife's birthday along with her mom and sister who flew in from South America. Noted that on my reservation as well as when we arrived. At no time did any wait staff acknowledge this or bring a token pastry with a candle - we had ordered dessert too! We went home to sing happy birthday."

  • "Love the pasta, was tasty and great texture. The bucatini was delicious as well as the burrata (appetizer). We also had the sorbet for dessert, and service was great. I have come back multiple times and it was amazing every time."

  • "When we plan a trip to Chicago we ususally book Cafe Spiagga for our first night since we arrive early evening. Unfortunately, the last few experiences have been hit or miss. This year was a miss-my wifes pasta dish was underwhelming and overall, the experience was not what were used to from CS. We put CS back on our list last year after a few years off, and it lived up to our expectations. Maybe with Spiagga currently closed for reservations, this affects the food prep for CS. Anyway, the ambience is great, but the prices dictate that the food has to lead the way, and CS falls short in that regard."

  • "Cafe Spiaggia delivers well-prepared but thoroughly conventional Italian food -- mostly Tuscan. It can be surprisingly hard for vegetarians, and the service has often been very spotty. This most recent visit was quite fine. And it remains a very quiet place, where one can talk easily."

  • "Food, artfully prepared and delicious. Ambience and service impeccable. The calamaretti was our favorite…the pasta mimicking the calamari perfectly. The calamari ringed by delicate anchovies complemented the pasta. Our second, the salmon, was cooked to perfection…crispy on the outside and medium rare on the inside. The service was attentive but not intrusive."

  • "We were a party of six (with several being kids) and it was apparent that the auto-gratuity policy led to us being ignored most of the night. Good food, but won't be back."

  • "Cafe Spiaggia is on the second floor, which gives you a nice view of the surrounding city. We enjoyed our evening very much starting with the friendly and excelent service. We both had different pasta dishes, and it was clear that the pasta was "homemade." Just excellent. Prices were very reasonable. We'll be back next time we visit Chicago. It is about a mile walk up Michigan Avenue from the hotels on the Chicago river, which makes for an enjoyable stroll, except it was 10 degrees out there. Be prepared!"

  • "Cafe Spiaggia continues to be our favorite weekend lunch spot. The food choices are always interesting, and we've yet to order anything that wasn't delectable. On our latest visit, my wife and I each had a mushroom and polenta appetizer that was incredible. I had the bucatini for my entree, and my wife had an egg dish called ouve. We shared and loved both dishes. The wine-by-the-glass selection was also great, with a nice variety of price ranges. Finally, our waiter and the hostesses could not have been nicer or more attentive. Overall, we could not have had a more enjoyable, or more delicious, time."

  • "The food here was some of the best I have ever had! The wine pairings were also excellent. The service was good for a busy Valentine's day."

  • "We went with high expectations to Cafe Spiaggia. We've been to Spiaggia before (now being renovated) and so decided to try to the cafe side of the restaurant. Unfortunately, it did not live up to our expectations. Service was lackluster (ordered items forgotten, wine brought midway through a course); a man with a large trashcan kept making his way back and forth through the restaurant. Some dishes were decent (pork, mushroom pasta), while other dishes definitely had the taste like they were poured out of a can (lentil soup). To top this all off, a $200 bill. Needless to say, Cafe Spiaggia feels like a chaotic overpriced trattoria. We actually booked a couple reservations ahead for this place, now cancelled, in its place: NoMi."

  • "The servers and maitre de were very friendly and took our coats right after we checked in for our reservation. The waiter was extremely helpful in explaining what a lot of the menu items are as they are in Italian and I did not understand a good portion of the menu. I will warn you that if you are not in to bold flavors you may be a little offput by some of the food. Specifically I ordered what was a "medium" strength cheese from the five selections they had, and the waiter pointed out it was one of the better cheeses. The flavor from it even with a healthy does of honey was overwhelming. The main courses were extremely good, specifically the gnocchi was so delicious. Overall I highly recommend this place."

  • "Our dining experience was started off with a glass of champagne and it only got better with each course. The salad was delicious and the wild boar gnocchi was amazing!!! We wanted more! :-). We chose the steaks which were wonderful and finished with an awesome piece of tiramisu."
