  • "The room is wonderful in its layout, decoration and lighting. The service is superb. But the food is truly outstanding. Only the very best and most creative chefs can execute a simple standard like carpaccio or a crudo and layer it with ingredients that are novel, seasonal, and add layers of complexity, flavor, and texture. Between us we had 5 dishes and one was better than the next. The prices and the portion sizes were both really reasonable. If we lived in Chicago we would return often, and we will return whenever we are in town."

  • "First the outstanding food: ricotta with radish and asparagus served in a tiny jar with crostini - fabulous; roasted radish salad - great; pasta with garbanzo beans and pancetta, pork chop with polenta - both wonderful. We have never been disappointed in the food. However, our last two visits, the service has been bad. In April, it was fair, but this week, it was horrendous. We had to flag down our server for pretty much everything. Also, although I made this reservation weeks ago and requested a window table, we were put in a corner and ignored. Not a good way to welcome back repeat diners!"

Items we ordered were generally tasty, well presented, and priced moderately for the location. A nice selection of Italian red wines started at about $60 a bottle. On Tuesday evening, this informal place was not very busy."

The only complaint was the olive oil that they serve with the bread was really bitter and my husband had terrible heart burn that night.   • "The food at the recently renovated Cafe Spiaggia tastes as wonderful as the new decor looks. The room looks great. The menu is small but serves great dishes from all of the food groups. We had the ravioli in pesto, the Amish chicken (half a chicken!) and the crab/seafood pasta and a fritto misto. There were 2 clean plates and since the chicken portion was so large, we left with half the bird. All entrees were delicious and beautifully plated. As always a great bread selection and we had a trio of gelato, chocolate hazelnut, raspberry and a chocolate chip with banana. You can make a meal here a leisurely as you want as our waiter never rushed us to leave our table. I would recommend to all."

  • "When my cousins were in town from Austin five years ago we had a dinner they remembered at Cafe Spiaggia. We were joined by more cousins for whom it was their "first time". Our meal in 2014 was perfect. Two had the tagiatelle neri, two the spaghettone, and one ravioli. The polenta was a dish to pass for the table. Portion sizes are "just right", flavors are robust but delicate, service was most attentive, plates were cleaned. Wines are available at a variety of price points. Cafe Spiaggia is fine dining in bit less formal, intimate setting. We had a very special, comfortable, most memorable meal. I suspect when my cousins come again they will ask to return!"

I was very excited and looked forward to the experience all weekend. This was by far the worst meal I have ever had in Chicago. Our waiter had to be reminded on several occasions to bring our drinks and bread. The prices were extremly high for what we received ($18 for 4 pieces of ravioli that were about the size of a quarter) and our food was cold and under cooked. We were extremely disappointed by our experience and will never return to this restaurant."
