A word from Cafe Society
Celebrating 20 plus years in business, Michel Leny first opened Café Society in 1987, inspired by his father Maurice Leny, a Chef at Maxim's in Paris. October 2007 welcomed new owner, Chef Cullen Kent, graduate of Le Cordon Bleu in Paris. Cullen and Michel continue the tradition of International cuisine emphasizing Belgian influences and classic French food. Located in the heart of the beautiful Evergreen Historic District in Midtown Memphis, Café Society features innovative preparations of fresh seafood, veal, lamb and beef along with an extensive wine list for your dining pleasure. With its casual dining and bistro atmosphere, Café Society is affectionately known to many Memphians as simply "Café" and continues to be a favorite of many of its midtown neighbors.Continued

  • "Open Table made it so easy to get a reservation within 15 minutes of when I was looking. It's a small restaurant & a nice yet casual feel. The bacon wrapped shrimp is AMAZING, as is just about anything on the menu. I had the Seafood Bisque & it was truly mouth watering. My date had the Grouper & it too was delicious. We almost ordered a 2nd round of bacon wrapped shrimp but opted for the Creme Brulee dessert. Again, creamy & delicious with a thick sugary top. There is a very good wine list as well. Highly recommend for lunch or dinner!"

  • "Our server was friendly and helpful. We had a very nice white wine at a terrific price. The goat cheese beignets were delicious and unexpected. The Dover sole was fried in the lightest batter and I ate every bite. This restaurant is new to me as I am from out of town but I would certainly go back."

  • "Cafe Society is beautifully decorated in lovely colors and relaxing atmosphere. The service was very good and Chef Cullen came out to visit. I had the Bistro menu which was delicious and reasonably priced. My husband had the scallops and we both have left overs. The soup was slightly salty but other than that, all the food was wonderful. No problem recommending this resturant to others who enjoy good food."

  • "I had forgotten about haw great an overall expierence this restaurant was. We have eaten here twice in 2 months and we will definitely be back. Service was outstanding. Food was spectacular. The setting was memorable."

  • "This is our favorite neighborhood (but citywide) restaurant. Last Saturday while talking with Chef Cullen while he was on his walk-about, we mentioned my wife's birthday last Wednesday. One thing led to another and we ended up giving him carte blanche for a birthday dinner for two. It was fabulous, five courses of delight and for a very reasonable price. From now on, we may just tell him to serve us as he wishes."

  • "This is the second time we have dined at Cafe Society in the past few weeks. Both times have exceeded our expectations. This most recent visit was particularly great - the fish special and the Dover meunière were outstanding - perhaps the best fish we have had in Memphis in a long time. I want to give a special shout out to our server - Brenna. She was exactly what you want - not too intrusive but attentive, very helpful with explanations, and nice but not overly chatty. When the wine we ordered was out of stock, the chef brought us a great option from his private reserve which was great. We will be back very soon!"

  • "We had another great lunch at Café Society. The salmon was to die for, and the daily pizza was great. Beware - it is a good size pizza - good for leftovers."

  • "Made the reservation 15 minutes before we arrived (early in the evening) and found the waitress preparing a lovely table for us as we walked in. Bistro menu was excellent."

  • "We go here often, and this time we went for lunch. The lunch menu is substantial and they always have a fish of the day and pizza of the day. We had the Kobe hotdog and bacon wrapped shrimp. Awesome! And don't miss the pomme frittes (French fries) - they are yummy!"

  • "Nice weekday dinner with the wife. Three-course menu had good selections which came beautifully prepared and were delicious. Good variety of options on the menu, reasonably priced for the quality. Service was attentive and prompt. Come here to reward yourself or impress your date, you won't be disappointed. We both had the faux filet with Gorgonzola. Thought my taste buds had died and gone to heaven."

  • "We had never been to Cafe Society. I took my husband there for his birthday, and it was an excellent choice. Service was good, food was amazing. The chef and the owner both stopped by our table. The owner was very friendly, and treated us to complimentary coffee to go with our dessert. I'm so glad we found this restaurant. I recommend it for special occasions, but also for a nice evening out on the town."

  • "This visit was for a special valentines dinner. The food was excellent and plentiful. The appetizer of bacon wrapped shrimp with horseradish sauce was delicious. The scallop bowl with mussels was so plentiful I had to take home some which is unusual for me. This was my second time dining here and will definitely return. Our server was excellent in attentiveness, and the tables were placed with plenty of space between them so as not to crowded. The owner visited all customers to personally thank them for coming. This is a gem I hope will be around for a long time."

  • "Such a quiet and calming night. The food was superb and the attention to detail was a great throwback to when owners cared about what went on in their restaurant. I have already made another reservation."

  • "Had my mothers 73rd birthday with family at the restaurant and enjoyed the entire experience. Have been a big fan for many-many years now and will continue to support Cafe Society for many more. The seafood bisque is wonderful and Cullen's specials are always a favorite. The table shared desserts: Creme Brulee, Bread pudding and the cheesecake were the best! Thanks for making it a wonderful night!"

  • "We had the restaurant to ourselves as it was Super Bowl Sunday! There were 6 of us and we had great meals, desserts, drinks and wine. Two of us had the bistro menu which is price fixed for 3 courses. Great value. Don't miss this gem."

  • "This restaurant is a personal favorite. It's small enough to be intimate but also accommodating for larger parties. The service is excellent. When they didn't have the bottle of wine I ordered from the menu, the chef offered a bottle from his personal reserve for me to try. He made a personal visit to the table to tell me about the wine and ask everyone's satisfaction with the meal and wine. The staff is always friendly and knowledgeable."

  • "We went to Cafe Society for my mother's 70th birthday after a weekend of touring Memphis. We LOVED it. The decor was elegant & simple with tall ceilings & white walls & large muted paintings throughout the room. The scallops were beautiful & delicious, the strip steak was HUGE & was wonderful & I had the special fish which was also perfectly cooked. It is a perfect date night restaurant but also was very nice for our group of 5. Lastly the chef/owner Cullen Kent, as we were leaving, was in the back kitchen area when we were walking out & he came out & we talked about the restaurant & he was just a delight. Would go back again & again."

  • "My wife just completed her Master's degree. I wanted to accentuate the moment by finding an intimate restaurant to dine in. Open Table had Cafe Society on their list of restaurants. It was the best decision I made that night. We had a great time at the restaurant from selection to delivery. Thank you CS!"

  • "I had two delightful dinners within four days of each other. I took my elderly mother for dinner on Christmas Eve and then met a group of girlfriends for dinner a few days later. I had the viand du jour each time (a blue-cheese stuffed filet and duck breast) and both were delicious. The bacon-wrapped shrimp, chocolate bon-bon, and creme brulee were also outstanding. The service was excellent and the owner stopped by the table to ensure that everything was going well. My friends had said that it had been years since they had visited but that they would be going back. My mother is already wondering when we shall go again."

  • "Our group of four chose to eat in the bar area. Smoking was allowed so that pleased on of our four. We sat in front by the window which turned out to be great. We were able to watch football while dining in excellence. The bartender was our waiter and was extremely attentive. Couldn't have asked for better."

  • "We ate here once before and the food was amazing! This time though at left disappointed. Both fish dishes we ordered were not seasoned well and so-so. There were 3 things that were wonderful: the scallops were cooked beautifully, the potato soup was excellent and so was the service."

  • "This was the first time we have been back in quite a while.Since it is always somewhat pricey, we were delighted to get a Living Social coupon to help out. We are so glad that we had that this time! We have always enjoyed dining at Café Society because of the quiet atmosphere, good service...and good food. I don't know if it was an off night, but neither of us enjoyed our food like we have in the past. The onion soup left a lot to be desired. First and last time on that! The salads were excellent. The entrees, not so much. The sole was bland and mushy. My husband had the special filet stuffed with gorgonzola cheese. He said the cheese overwhelmed the filet and made it almost tasteless. Disappointed this time. Not sure if we will go back."

  • "We've eaten at Cafe Society several times and our meal this time was probably the best we've had yet. I always get the creme brulee. Our server was very knowledgable about the wine list and the meals, plus she was attentive without being overbearing. I am looking forward to returning."

  • "Even though Cafe Society was on our "top 5" list of area restaurants, for various reasons It's been a decade since we last visited. A LivingSocial voucher brought us back this time, and it was apparent the food and service are still outstanding."

  • "We three were happy diners at Cafe Society. We were greeted warmly by the host upon arrival. Our waitress was pleasant and attentive without hovering. The food was tasty and presented well, the servings bountiful, and the delivery to table was timed well. The wine list although not ridiculously extensive had some very nice reasonably priced options. The pan-seared scallops cooked to perfection with mussels and shrimp in succulent broth would be my recommendation. Open since the '80's…Cafe Society is clearly doing something right. If you have never been, add it to your list. If you haven't been in a while, go again."

  • "Had a terrific dinner Friday night.... Had the bacon-wrapped shrimp as an appetizer. Still terrific- horseradish adds just the right amount of fragrance to make that starter pop. The scallops and mussels were excellent, and the filet i had was crusted on the outside, and perfectly rare as ordered inside. Service was very good. The drink orders were a little slow to appear, but they did have a good crowd on the bar side of the restaurant. I moved out of state fifteen years ago, so it's been way too long since I paid a visit to Cafe S. It won't be that long until we come back for our next visit. Thanks for a great meal and an excellent evening spent in the Evergreen District."

  • "I could rate this restaurant higher but not for the heavy smoke from the bar. Very unappetizing. The food was actually very, very good. The drinks were very fairly priced. I will continue to go in spite of the smoke. You can't just close a door to keep it out. I asked for more bread, never got it. Asked for lemon, I ordered the scallops, never got it. Hence, the fair service rating."

  • "We we're in Memphis for a weekend getaway and found this place on living social and thought we would like to try a local establishment. Glad we did, it was very nice and we enjoyed our dinner immensely. The seafood bisque was delicious and I had the salmon special, again delicious. I would recommend this to anyone wanting a special dinning experience in Memphis."
