  • Having been going to Sevilla

Having been going to Sevilla for the past decade; I have always lamented the shutdown of the old Sevilla Cafe. It had a quaint, quintessential feeling about it, that made you feel like you had just stepped off a street in Madrid. Today, the food was overall good; Tapenades and asparagus flopped, but mushrooms, shrimp and paella shined. The unfortunate thing was service. We waited 20 minutes for a pitcher of (very good) Sangria (we had finished 3 tapas by then); and we asked for a serrated knife (read poor tapenades on stale bread) - the server replied "what for", with a noticeable grimace. I feel that a historically WONDERFUL restaurant has sold out to the "charm" of Gas Lamp - aiming not for the stars, but mediocrity. A real shame.

One of the best restaurants I've been too in a long time, food was delicious, service was outstanding, atmosphere was warm and welcoming, The place was packed and for some reason did not have my reservation through open table but accommodated us immediately. Would highly recommend to everyone and most definitely would return when I'm back in the San Diego area.

What a shame. Old Cafe Sevilla was a favorite of ours. Food was good and service was better. Looks like the new location stressed the importance on atmosphere and looks. It still will do well because the location is much better on 5 th. Your average person might not know the difference in food.

We have been to Spain on numerous occasions and therefore it is a treat to find a restaurant that serves authentic tapas and paella. The food was very good as was the service. Quite an enjoyable evening.

I made reservation for our anniversary before attending downtown show. I was glad I made reservation. I was shocked to see place so busy at 5pm. Our show was 7pm. We were seated immediately they saved 1 table in a full house. We were taken to our table and hardly acknowledged afterwards. They were so extremely busy + understaffed, we never had a chance to ask what featured specials were on the menu. The server greeted us after approx 20 minutes, and never returned again. It's hard to hold her accountable, she was very busy. I blame restaurant management for being unprepared to handle crowds for a major event. My wife (frustrated) asked me to leave at 5:40pm. She had concerns about 7pm show. Believed 2:00 was plenty of time (Disappointed!)

Food was outstanding. Service was so-so : we ordered the Bocadillo Tapas Platter (all 6, meaning 1 of each) but got double of 1 tapa type, so we only got 5 different types - was corrected after we pointed it out to the server. The house salad was forgotten - only corrected after we reminded our server. Overall, we prefer the cozier ambiance from its old location on 4th St. This new location was cramped inside - a little too jam-packed.

The decor and new open layout of Cafe Sevilla is wonderful. The hospitality and service was great - friendly and attentive, they definitely wanted us to have a wonderful experience. The new decor is much improved, has plenty of conversation pieces, and is not as dark as the previous location. As for the food, it has not changed - very flavorful and tapas go beyond the menu description, it is truly an experience that takes you to Spain. How do you describe the bright and fresh food that pops with flavor? You just want to eat more! And for the sangria, we can never decide so we drink both the red and white. Every time we visit San Diego, we have dinner at Cafe Sevilla at least once.

We were seated quickly... but at a table right in front of the stage where a band was going to play, not very well thought out on their part. In fact, the band started to set up fairly soon after we were seated, unconcerned about spoiling our meal or experience... the waitress didn't bother to move us out of the way. The food was delicious, but took 20-30 for each set of tapas to arrive. Our waitress almost seemed to avoid our table, knowing the service was already so poor.

My wife and I ate at the Long Beach lication several years ago, and we recall being underwhelmed but cannot now recall why. Not the most authentic Spanish food experience, but still incredibly flavorful. Besides, what *is* authenticity when removed from time and place? The garlic shrimp was delicious, the goat cheese with piquillos is going into my own home repertoire, and jamon Iberico never disappoints. The paella Valenciana surprised with its wonderful addition of morcilla (blood susage).

I set up a reservation for my anniversary with my wife for a great dinner prior to seeing "Wicked". My 6 month old daughter was being difficult prior to going to the sitters and pushed us to about 10 minutes late. I called Sevilla to explain and ask for a reprieve and I was assured it was "no problem". I dropped my wife off at the front door of Sevilla 10 minutes late and went to park... When I arrived I found her sitting at the bar area because the hostess had given away our table. While the food was great, our experience was marred because this was not even close to the romantic atmosphere that my wife and I had hoped for on our first anniversary dinner together (I have been deployed for our others).

Cafe Sevilla introduced me to some delicious Spanish cuisine that I hadn't tried before. I stayed an hour and a half just enjoying the mouth-watering meat paella and talking with locals I didn't know. The waitress shared some of the most flavorful options and worked with my gluten and dairy dietary restrictions.

  • The art of the upsell
    OpenTable Diner Since 2005
    Dined on 6/16/2012
This place could be amazing but was disappointing. The food ranged from fair (octopus on potato) to excellent (black ink paella) but the drinks were watered down (we had a pitcher of the "Royal" sangria which was overly sweet and didn't have the advertised kick. Worse was the service (and it wasn't his fault) you could tell he was overly trained to "upsell" all along the way. He was forced to deliver an explanation of what "tapas" were almost to the point of being condescending. Me and my dining partner had traveled to Spain - nothing on the menu was particularly difficult to comprehend. Looking around you could tell it's overly managed as none of the employees smile as they work. Good for tourists and the Olive Garden crowd.

Restaurant atmosphere was nice but no romantic seating for two. When we got there around 6:30pm, upstairs was empty but they seated us at a two person table that was located right next to the wait station & elevator. I understand that they want to seat as many people as possible but if I had known that I would get seated at the corner, right next to the wait station, I won't have made the reservation ahead of time.

Great fun, took my daughter and her good girlfriend. Order 6 different tapas to share ( everyone picked two), and had the kids eating new and interesting foods. Sangria (we got the red) was expensive, but full of fruit and wine was of good quality. The show was just getting started as we were leaving, so if spanish guitar music is on your list make an 8:30 or later reservation. Oh and P.S. MAKE A RESERVATION!

Service was first-rate from the time we arrived and were seated until we finished dessert, paid and departed. So many menu choices made it hard to choose; I went for the paella Valenciana, and my friend had the meat lovers tapas platter. Both dishes offered a wide range of taste experiences. I think this is a place where you won't go wrong whatever you order, and I will definitely return next time I am in the San Diego area.

Our server, Adam, was fabulous and he is the reason our night as wonderful as it was. He was personable, very helpful, knowledgeable about the menu and very attentive. We really enjoyed the atmosphere and the people watching out the front window. As for our meal, the only dish I found really unique and outstanding was the stuffed date appetizer. Everything else was mediocre at best. It was also my opinion that the chef uses too much cocoa in too many of his dishes ~ it made many different dishes taste exactly the same.

Food, unexpectedly was average. Authentic? Depends on what type of Spanish cuisine one grew up with. Tasha was great, and hostess was fantastic. Unfortunately the loud crowd made this experience not so wonderful. Who could have guessed a crowd of 75 showed up at once on a Sunday evening? We'll try again some other time to get another perspective.
