Diner Reviews
  • "Café Routier is far and away the best restaurant on the Connecticut Shoreline. We loved everything about our meal there, from the cocktails to the outstanding service to the delicious food. Don't miss the French fries and steak. The coconut layer cake dessert is also a must-order."

  • "Service was fantastic and the food great. This is a great place to go with friends or family for a special dinner out. Fried oyster app is simply amazing. Cocktails were spot on."

  • "We eat here once a week and have for many years. We have many choices but we keep coming back because we love the specials as well as the time tested permanent entrées. One part of the menu changes every 90 days to feature different regions of the world. Simply the best for many miles."

  • "we had dinner on a busy Friday night and found both the food and service to be excellent. Nobody rushed us through so we able to enjoy a leisurely meal with friends. I am on crutches right now and a waiter was very helpful in finding a place to stow them while we dined. Altogether a great experience. We will return!"

  • "We had a fabulous dinner, Winter Salad was out of this world. Steak Frites was exceptional, as well. Place was jammed but hostess handled it with charm. Wait staff was the only area that wasn't up to par with the rest. Wasn't bad, just wasn't memorable and seemed to be going thru the motions All in all, it was 4 stars and I am headed back very soon!"

  • "We dined as a group and everyone was very happy with their meal. If you order the mussels be sure you bring your appetite! Service was very goo, and the dining room is calming and comfortable. We will return."

  • "We love dining with Cafe' Routier because they consistently give us a wonderful evening in every way. Food is consistently perfect and interesting and the drinks list and wine list are nicely thought out. Service always professional and lovely ambience for a relaxing evening of dining"

  • "Even though we don't live in the neighborhood, we think of Café Routier as our special neighborhood gem. The offerings are always very interesting, the food delicious, service friendly and competent, and the whole atmosphere relaxing. We not only recommend it to friends, but take them there, too. The noise level can be quiet (on a Sunday) to more lively (on weekend nights), but you can always hold a conversation at your table."

  • "Sometimes I pop in for a quick bite from their regional menus. the latest incarnation (GALICIA, Spain) is excellent. The octopus dish is sensational, so good I had them make me an entree size. Very friendly service from employees that have been there for years."

  • "I have driven by this place for years and never stopped. Wow what a great place. The clam and shrimp app is one of the best dishes i have ever day"

  • "Foie gras starter was absolutely perfect, as was the duck breast main course. On our next visit we would ask for less garlic in the mussels starter. All in all we love your food!"

  • "we always enjoy the many different aspects of Cafe routier. My personal favorites are a regional appetizer, I always get a bomster scallop dish and ALWAYS one of nancy and mary's desserts. Expansive wine list and fun stuff always going on in the building."

  • "We like that the menu changes from time to time but old favorites are still there. Specials are always wonderful and well-prepared. We eat on the early side before it gets crowded and the noise level rises a bit. The main dining room is more festive. Sometimes it seems the wait staff has too many tables, and we are left waiting, even to order that first beverage. Overall, though, we like Cafe Routier and have it in our regular dining line-up."

  • "My husband and I went here for an anniversary dinner with a gift certificate won at an auction, otherwise we would not have traveled to Westbrook. But it was a special occasion, and the weather was good. Being on Rt. 1 being the only drawback for atmosphere, we found the inside of the restaurant very inviting. Once you go through the doors from the busy Route, the bar is off to the left and the spacious dining room on the right. Our service was prompt and attentive. I liked the list of specialty martinis with prices.. Our martinis were flavorful, not too sweet. Being a vegetarian, I would of liked to have seen more vegetarian options on the menu though. My entree was very good, and the dessert Black Forest Cake was not too heavy."

  • "The meal was very good, prepared to perfection, and served professionally. We were seated in a near empty restraurant next to 2 loud ladies in need of a muffler."

  • "The overall review is 5 star..... from the interesting menu choices, the extensive wine list to the waitress, Sasha, who was very familial with menu and wine list. Would highly recommend and we will definitely return."

  • "This is a neighborhood gem with world-class food. The three-part menu ("regional" and "seasonal" sections that change and "favorites" that are always there, provides variety and old-favorites. They have the best fried oysters I've ever had; I think we order them every time. Also spectacular French fries as an appetizer - one order is easily enough for four. We've taken out of town guests more than once, and all ( including a couple of serious foodies) have been very impressed. Atmosphere is both relaxed and elegant and service is outstanding. On our most recent visit, the restaurant was completely full ; a busy Saturday night. . Also, bar menu is fantastic - small plates plus the regular meme. And great cocktails."

  • "The Food at Cafe Routier is as good if not better than some very pricey celebrity chef restaurants on the East Coast. The ambience is clearly better and more romantic than many other restaurants of its caliber on the Shoreline and near by cities. The service too is topnotch. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone (except families it is not a place for little kids.) We are fortunate to have a restaurant of such a high caliber on the Shoreline."

  • "The food was good but the prices are too high for the quality. Wait staff was friendly, hostess was rude and not at all welcoming. The entrance is hard to find, wandered around trying to find the hostess. The bar and lounge was bustling and seemed like fun. The dining room was stuffy and silent, was afraid to talk."

  • "I normally don't feel compelled to give detailed reviews but this restaurant definitely warrants praise! New to the area, we are seeking out places to dine and we were very pleased with Cafe Routier and will be coming again! We dined with another couple so felt compelled to try some starters. We ordered the Fries, which were delicious, and the Pot Belly starter, which my husband said was really good. Entrees ordered were: Hanger steak, 2 Scallop entrees, and the meatloaf. My husband and I split the scallops and steak so we could have some of each. The steak was magnificent and the scallops were done perfectly! We were very pleased with our entrees! We were so full but decided to share a dessert anyway. The turtle cake was an A+!"

  • "We went to Cafe Routier for our early Valentines Day dinner and were completely satisfied with our experience. The food was phenomenal, the service was excellent, and the atmosphere was sophisticated and romantic. My husband and I got the fois gras and the house made fries as starters and I especially liked the aioli served along with the fries. For the main course my husband had the chicken and dumplings and he could not stop raving about how amazing they were. He described the dumplings as "pillowy" and said the chicken was cooked perfectly. I had the duck and was also very satisfied with my meal. For dessert my husband had gelato and I had the bette noir, which was just the right amount of chocolate to end the meal!"

  • "After multiple visits I found the food of consistent high quality. Whether you try the duck, steak or scallops, you're sure to enjoy your food. Many great wines to choose from with reasonable prices. The truffle fries and mussels are must try appetizers."

  • "We have been to Cafe Routier in the past, but only in the lounge area for tapas, which is always a delicious experience. This was our first time to have dinner in the main dining room, and we were extremely pleased with every aspect. Definitely get the turtle cake if you are inclined to a decadent dessert. Just sayin. Had an awesome pork belly off the Galician menu, and the duck breast with foie gras cassoulet was outstanding. Besides the food the service was just right. Friendly and attentive without being overbearing. Sasha was ready and willing to give recommendations, which we followed, and she was right on. And I have to say that the busboy who attended to us was one of the most professional young men I've seen. Great job!"

  • "On this, our second time at the cafe, the idea of a three-part menu again made the dining experience different and fascinating. The grilled octopus was tender and beautifully flavored (I would have preferred it more charred, but that's a personal thing). The Winter salad was a joy. The "campside" grilled trout and chicken and dumplings were both beautifully done and, for us, almost too much food. Lovely space. Very friendly and informative service. Will definitely go back."

  • "Went to Cafe Routier for my 40th Birthday celebration with friends. Loved it! The food was great, the food selection was very good (we were able to order off of the tapas and regular dinner menu) and the service was excellent. They even "threw in" a piece of delicious chocolate cake with a candle since it was my birthday. Overall, a great experience. Will definitely be returning in the future!"

  • "We had a perfect evening at Cafe Routier for our annual early New Year's Eve dinner. We both ordered the center cut fillet -Beef Wellington with mushroom deuxelles and asparagus. It was just fabulous! We topped it off with the turtle cake for dessert and we were in heaven. The staff was extremely gracious and attentive. It was an awesome dining experience. What a great way to start the New Year!"
