Diner Reviews
  • "Flat iron steak was chewy. Didn't care for the BBQ dusting on the Scallops. Great wait staff."

  • "We've been visiting Westbrook for years but just finally visited Cafe Routier. What a great find! Food was top notch and delicious."

  • "We were able to snag a last minute table on a Saturday night, which was a nice surprise for such a lovely experience. The food was great, good wine list, and Rodney, our server, was awesome. I love the seasonally changing menu. We will be back for sure, even though it isn't close to home for us."

  • "Excellent service and meal. The halibut was superb. Portion sizes perfect, finally correct sizes. Thank you. We have been to Routier often, but this was the best ever."

  • "We recently took visiting relatives to Cafe Routier for dinner. The food was spectacular. The service was courteous and prompt. And we had a wonderful Cabernet Sauvignon to accompany the food. The chicken dish that i had was one of the best i have ever. All around a thoroughly enjoyable dinner--excellent food, good wine, great service and nice ambience."

  • "Driving down to the shoreline is well worth the trip to Café Routier. The service is friendly and knowledgeable, and the food so well prepared. The potato encrusted goat cheese tart is to die for - a meal unto itself!! Clam chowder with whole clams on half shells in a separate bowl is a wonderful twist on an old standard - heavenly! Hot, crusty bread is so good iit was hard to limit ourselves before the actual meal came! Atmosphere is laid back but still "grown up." None of that 'Chester' snootiness here that's so off-putting. We'll return again and again! The only sad thing: they're not open for lunch. ;-("

  • "Well, we enjoyed another magical and perfect dinner here again. The food was simply marvelous. Everyone loved all of their choices. The waiter and staff are very professional and perfect. I only wish I could have started dinner all over for another round!!"

  • "We have been to Routier many times and have always had a great meal and great service. The seasonal and regional menus change often which is great because there's always something different to try. I highly recommend that you have dinner here."

  • "I had previously commented on Cafe Routier. However, since that time I have been back to Cafe Routier twice. Each time the food was superb, the service great and the atmosphere was extremely pleasant. Recently i have had the spring lamb in prosciutto and the brick chicken. Both were fantastic. Also enjoyed the small plates and very good wine selection. This restaurant is easily the best place for excellent and novel cuisine on the CT shoreline"

  • "We happily returned to Cafe Routier for dinner on my birthday earlier this week. The menu is diverse, with seasonal and regional options along with a few specials, and the food is the best around. The service is great - attentive, friendly and courteous servers. Overall an excellent place for dinner!"

  • "Friendly service and comfortable seating along with an outstanding meal. Extensive wine list which was excellent."

  • "This is a restaurant we enjoy. There is an array of dishes, some of which change and others which are old standbys. There are always a few specials. Around this time of year, it gets filled up early and the noise can be an issue. There are a lot of larger tables 5 and up, so what might be a quiet dinner for my husband and I can be less than intimate. However, John is a great waiter and the food is very good, so we keep coming back."

  • "It was our special evening out for my husbands 80th B-day. We had a very nice time. Food was very good. Husband ordered the duck and send it back to cook some more - was very good; the Trout was above expectation. The cheese cake for dessert was wonderful."

  • "Our favorite restaurant continues to exceed expectations every visit. I made reservations on Open Table and mentioned it was my wife'sd birthday in the comments section. The next morning I received a call asking if I wanted a cake. The cake was exceptional as was the meal."

  • "First time visit was quite a pleasant experience from the mountain of PEI's in broth to the off-menu desert cake and then even the convenient parking & getaway. Service was like dining at Great Aunt Sofie's with the personal attention (even provided a loaner pair of cheaters since I forgot mine in the car). Looking forward to the next visit. Drinks & Dinner + tip was good value."

  • "Our most recent visit on a week night again demonstrated this restaurant's commitment to excellent service, notable in this part of the country. Our server arrived instantly to take our drink order, returned often without being flagged down, courses arrived on time (and hot) and the check appeared at the end without prompting. A minor nit on this visit would be some kitchen quality control issues. My skate was excessively salty, aggravated by the appropriately briny caper sauce. My companion's risotto, on the other hand, needed salt. Our first course items were perfect, however, the grilled escarole salad being especially good. Still the best restaurant on the shoreline. We'd love to see a few more reasonably priced choices on the wine list"

  • "Definitely will be returning. Some place you can take your Guests and get a consistently good meal. The service was excellent. Our order was placed and received in a timely fashion. No real waiting for anything. Nice to be in and out in a little over a hour. Everything was cooked perfectly. It could be considered a little pricey for the portion size. That being said a fine place to have a meal."

  • "I was very anxious to get back to Cafe Routier for many reasons, but those fries were especially calling my name. And once again I was amazed at the perfection of the food and service. "

  • "friendly, knowledgeable and long time servers really make this place shine. They know their product and they are very helpful when trying to decide what we are in the mood for. We come here often and one of the major reasons is Beth, Randy, Dana, John, Jaime and Dan. Thank you for always making our evenings special"

  • "Our server, John, created a very positive first impression, which set the stage for an excellent with friends. Great menu idea for three themes which you can mix and match."

  • "As always, Cafe Routier always comes through as my favorite shoreline restaurant. I am a vegetarian and they always are willing to vary a recipe. Their 'fries' are irresistible , dangerously good, I don't like sharing mine! "

  • "This restaurant is a great place to bring friends. Great atmosphere and the food is always amazing! The sliders were amazing. Can't wait to go again!"

  • "The kind of place where I will sometimes dine alone. My husband travels often for work and I often find myself dining out alone at cafe routier (either bar or dining room)... friendly place with long time staff that always make me feel welcomed. Jaime, John, Dana, Dan, etc... friendly servers who know they will see me by myself a few times a month. The 'off the beaten path' lounge menu items are sensational like Bulgogi, fish tacos and moules. Bartenders make a great martini. Fun place "

  • "This is our favorite local restaurant, although weekend it's hard to get seated without a reservation. Lately we have been taking our chances in the lounge. I would love to be able to eat the chopped Mexican salad in the main dining room as it's become my favorite entree, but I still love other choices."

  • "The only thing I observed French about Cafe' Routier is the name, because it was certainly not the food. I had a well executed charbroiled skirt or hanger steak with pommes frites, which I was happy with. My wife had scallops, which were seared, and then obviously put under a heat lamp and dried out, which is amateurish in an "upscale" restaurant, and shows they have issues with logistics. Coming into the restaurant you have a bar on the left and people dining on the right, but no one to meet/greet you. It is only when you walk into the dining room (uninvited) that you are noticed by staff, which is odd. I will conclude that my efforts to make a reservation did NOT payoff because airplane seating would have been more accommodating."

  • "Café Routiers is a truly exceptional restaurant. Food and service are excellent. One of the best features of Café Routier is the ever-changing menu. There are three sections to the dinner menu: regional, seasonal and specialties. “Regional” does NOT mean southern New England. On a rotating basis, Café Routier features cuisine from various regions of the world, and the chef produces outstanding dishes, irrespective of the geographic region featured. “Seasonal” is self explanatory; “Specialties” are perennial favorites, to wit, when my husband treats himself to a steak, he eschews steak houses and saves his steak ration for steak/frites at Café Routier. Highly recommended."

  • "We live in Stamford but always make a point to dine at Cafe Routier when we are in the area. It is one our our favorite restaurants. We have never had a cocktail or meal that we have not thoroughly enjoyed."

  • "My wife and I have been dining at Cafe Routier for a number of years and have found it to be one of the best restaurant experiences on the shoreline. We tend to go on special occasions (most recently my wife's birthday) and continue to be impressed by the menu's balance of continuity and creativity. There are, in our view, no better french fries anywhere! The barroom has a separate and equally inventive menu. "

  • "We dined on a Monday night for our anniversary and it was wonderful. The food was fabulous--my husband had a spicy style special with fish and mussels while I had the skate. Those dishes plus salads and a dessert were just delicious! What made everything perfect was our server--she was efficient but didn't hover and her meal suggestions were so on the money--she could describe the various dishes and give specifics about them. What a great job she did-thanks for a lovely anniversary dinner!"

  • "My parents first took me about 17 years ago, they have both passed on, but I have vivid memories of some great meals with them at Cafe Routier and it's just one of many reasons I keep coming back. Now I take my Children to Cafe Routier. friendly staff and always very laid back atmosphere. "

  • "First visit to Cafe Routier. Entered through the bar, not realizing there was another entrance. Reservation was Sat. 5:30pm. After passing through the bar to the main entrance area, no one greeted us. The restaurant was not busy at this time. A woman and man were talking at the maitre d's station. I had to approach them, and say we had a reservation. Otherwise, we would have been ignored. Unprofessional. No one offered to take our coats, even though I noticed all guests arriving after us were asked. John, our waiter, was knowledgeable and attentive. His service and the food, were excellent."

  • "Of special note, were the always fabulous mussels. The cod fish was delicious. The monkfish was very good, but skimpy (4 little medallions…). T.he chocolate dessert was delicious. The service was attentive and prompt."
