Diner Reviews
  • "On our yearly trip to the coast, Cafe Roma is a must for us. Romantic and full of memories. No matter what we order, it is a delight to see and eat, and there is a tasty wine to go with it. We were greeted warmly and seated immediately, like we were VIPs. We started with a gamberetti (shrimp) appetizer, but I wish they put four on the plate instead of three. Then the special baked stuffed artichoke, which was fantastic with the crumbs. Following, we ordered a special pasta dish as our primi: large spaghetti noodle with prosciutto in a carbonara sauce. Then we each had filet mignon, cooked perfectly to our specifications. Service was very good, so this remains a favorite. "

  • "From the moment we were greated at the door we felt like we were the only priority of the waiter. Superb food and perfect ambiance. Best place in town to be seen and to see others."

  • "I recently visited Cafe Roma, SLO. I had been many times but moved out of state. My recent trip was such a treat. I love their escargot and their baked artichokes. You cannot go wrong with any items on the menu. Not typically a restaurant I would recommend for children."

  • "Great food, service and ambience. What more can you ask for? We had a risotto lobster shrimp special and a beef entrie, both were exceptional."

  • "As out-of-town guests, we were eager for a classy, unpretentious dinner to top off our day. Cafe Roma fit the bill perfectly. I had the Buccatini Carbonara and husband had the Boar Ragu Papardelle. Both were delicious though if we were to return, I would order the Boar Ragu for myself. When I lived in SLO 20 years ago, i knew that Cafe Roma promised delicious meals, but they were beyond my modest college budget. Cafe Roma delivers classy meals to this day that meets the expectations of a longing (starving!) college student!"

  • "Cafe Roma remains a consistent and outstanding restaurant, that we return to repeatedly. Of note this time was a surprise appetizer of fresh sautéed sardines. It's rare to be abel to find fresh sardines anywhere, and their preparation was just right. I wish that it could be offered as a main entree, with the only thing needed as a side would be the oven roasted potatoes. I again had the excellent beet salad, and the short ribs as the entree. Both were prepared just right, and neither needed anything to make them any more perfect. Two deserts that were just superb were the mascarpone based fruit tart, and of course the wonderful tiramisu. One cannot go wrong in dining at Cafe Roma!"

  • "We had a really nice dinner there. Food was really good, service was really good and it was just a wonderful experience. While we have been there many times it seems like they have upgraded their menu to reflect a more complex and refined recipes."

  • "This was our first time here, but it was well worth it. A little expensive, but the food was good, the service was attentive, and the ambience was good. I'd guess a lot of long-time residents eat here, judging from the crowd on the night we went."

  • "I dined here with a larger group and the service was excellent. My food was enjoyable and the appearance of other dishes was great. Others said they enjoyed their food as well. We will definitely be back."

  • "We were from out of town. The ford salesman recommended Cafe Roma telling us he takes his wife there for their anniversary. They were running a little late but we had a really good martini in the bar and watched the Olympics. Our waiter was fantastic. Food was out of this world. The beet salad is one of the best I have ever had."

  • "This is a great restaurant....first time for most of us, will make it a point to come again and again and again. How did we miss this spot before??? Everything was great---the owner was present and welcoming, the food was excellent and prices very competitive - doable! Wonderful ambience, it felt good to be there-like in italia!"

  • "We have previously traveled to several areas of Italy. Whenever we're at Cafe Roma, it is like returning back to Italy's Old World charm, food and culture. The service is outstanding at Cafe Roma, and the food and outdoor patio complete the perfect experience. We had shrimp linguine, spaghetti, mixed green salads and a bottle of Prosecco. Life doesn't get much better than this!"

  • "We returned to Cafe Roma again, after dining there last month. As it was then, our dinners were excellent ! The food is consistently high level. Of note, the beet salad was perfect, and would definitely have that again the next time. When I dined there last month, the short ribs were so good that I ended up ordering them again this time. Service was very attentive, and the entire dining experience was outstanding. Our next visit will be in a few weeks."

  • "This restaurant is very special -- in its cuisine, ambiance, decor, and waitstaff. We celebrated my sister's birthday last night, and Jeff, our waiter last night, was a delight! He made this evening very special for us. He was experienced, attentive, knew the menu inside and out, and had just the right touch of humor to make our dining experience just perfect. The bread was fresh and hearty and served with olive oil and a flavorful balsamic vinaigrette. Cafe Roma salad was excellent Pinot Perbacco wine luscious, & my Veal Scaloppini Piccata and my sister's Shrimp Scampi was to die for. Crème Brule was great and Jeff's singing Happy Birthday made our evening perfect!"

  • "This was our first time dining @ Cafe Roma and it was great. We were greeted immediately and, since we were very early for our reservation, had a glass of wine in the bar. The bar tender was great suggesting wines offering information about local wineries. Once seated, our waiter Luis, was amazing! Very helpful, friendly, informative, and attentive. The food was also excellent. We will definitely return to Cafe Roma!"

  • "The intentional food creation has love and flavor in every bite. Every time I have been here I have had a hard time making a choice of what to eat. My parents took me here as a kid and now I return as an adult whenever I'm driving through or staying in SLO."

  • "Second time I've been here and the food is still delicious. The service was great and the overall experience was fantastic. Main courses took a bit long this time but everything was to the liking. The only thing that was a little sub par was the risotto. The scallops on top were great but the risotto was rather bland. Highly recommend this restaurant to anyone who loves great food."

  • "very disappointed with the steamed mussels. Tasted fishy and different broth than I was used to. The lobster butter (poured on the plate) was so salty I had to tilt the plate to get away from it. My wifes scallops were wonderful"

  • "Food was great. We all loved our meals, but service was very slow. We realize that this is a fine dining establishment and they try not to rush you but the server did not check back often enough. In the end, the server gave us the bill for the wrong bill."

  • "I have been visting Cafe Roma for many years. When heading south from my home in the Bay Area, I try to make it there for lunch or dinner. I have never been disappointed. I have friends who feel the same way. Cafe Roma strikes a perfect balance in every way."

  • "Good food and okay service but it was Christmas Eve and the restaurant was fairly busy with large parties so that can take up a lot of the servers time. Everyone at our table enjoyed their entree and dessert but we all shared one of the specials as an appetizer which was shellfish in a broth and it wasn't very good at all. The decor at this restaurant is starting to look very tired and dated it is time for an update. All in all we had a good time but nothing that stands out as being extraordinary."

  • "The food was great except the desserts. The tiramisu was not up to par...I have a great recipe from an Italian, easy & delicious "the best" if you want to try it. Happy to send it to you. Also the crème Brule seemed past its prime.. like it was in the fridge too long.. Our server needs more training. She was very willing, did her very best and has great potential but someone needs to train her a bit more. She served our champagne in wine glasses...and did not bring a champagne bucket until I asked for it. Again she was sweet, very willing, was appreciative when I mentioned to her she might want to serve in champagne glasses in the future. No one has trained her so please this is not her fault, it is yours. Training is everything!"

  • "Our family of 4 found this gem available for a 2:00 seating on Thanksgiving. We found parking easily and after a short walk a friendly greeting upon entering the front door. We were seated quickly and were offered beverages immediately. Our server gave detailed descriptions of the choices, took our order and was back quickly with yummy bread and oil. I had a homemade soup starter and it was perfect. The entrees were all fantastic. I had the short rib. Wow! I'm a big man but couldn't finish all the plate. Everyone else had the traditional turkey dinners. We had to stop the teenager from trying to lick his plate. Highly recommend"

  • "We had a party of 10. Cal Poly Graduation. There were ALOT of large table parties in the restaurant. We had reservation and were seated right away. Ed our waiter was polite and likable which are big bonuses in my book. However, we had to ask twice to get more bread. One of our party members ordered a second glass of wine which did not appear for almost 30 minutes. Sadly, the rest of us were not asked if we would like refills. The big negative for us was that our food was not brought out until nearly 9:30 and we were seated at 8pm. 90 minutes is way too long to wait for food. The prices were reasonable and the ambiance was fabulous. I would eat there again, but most of my party members said they would not return."

  • "We love Cafe Roma. Great food, great service and the wine list is varied and interesting. It has the feel of the family owned and operated restaurant (because it is), and it delivers the goods in the food and wine. I had gnocchi with lamb ragout - hello! Fantastic and not something I would make at home."
