A word from Cafe Pyrenees
Cafe Pyrenees is tucked inside the Adler Square Shopping Plaza in Libertyville, IL. Once you step inside you're treated to warm color tones, greenery, a myriad of wine bottles, hearty brick features, and fresh smells of the featured dishes. Customers rave about the mouth watering dessert delight Chocolate Feuilletine, A.k.a. “The Hockey Puck” which is a crispy praline topped with dark chocolate mousse and then covered with dark chocolate ganache. If you aren't ready to start your meal with a dessert customers suggest to begin with a simple order of Escargot drenched in herbed butter or give the Duck Quesadilla a try with it's blended flavors of melted cheese, duck confit and a homemade cherry mango chutney. Some of the traditional entree staples you will find are Steak Frites, Beef Bourguignon, Seafood Ravioli filled with shrimp, scallops, crab meat and lobster sauce, Chicken Paillarde and Sauteed Calves Liver. Weekly drink specials Wild Wine Wednesday, 1/2 price Martini Fridays!

We have been eating at Cafe Pyrenees for many years and have never been disappointed with the food, wine or service. The wait staff have all been there for a long time, they're attentive, and they really know the food and wine they serve. Mari is a terrific host, and always visits our table to ask how everything is. On this visit, my wife and I both started with flights of red wine - one French, and the other "Delicious Reds" - and Mari's Salad. For our mains, my wife had one of the appetizer specials, sautéed shrimp in a saffron sauce. One of my favorites is the Grilled Hanger Steak, but I opted for the braised lamb shank from the specials menu, and we finished with a brioche bread pudding. Fantastic! This dining experience lived up to every other we've had at Cafe Pyrenees.

My wife and I have been patrons of Mari and Chef Jean-Marc Loustaunau for 23 years. The food is superb. The portions are "right-sized," not so enormous you need a cart to lug home leftovers, not so skimpy you come away hungry. The menu is never static, continually evolving with the seasons. Wine pairings are intelligent, really melding with with the dishes, never slanted to extract maximum dollar from the patron's wallet. Service is efficient, staff are very knowledgeable about the dishes, preparation method, and always ready to suggest, not push, a wine to complement the meal. The ambiance is casual and friendly, but quiet enough for conversation to proceed unhindered. You owe it to yourself to try Cafe Pyrennes!

Cafe Pyrenees is a family-run restaurant that has outstanding French cuisine. But rather than the heavy "Old World" version this is lively, more contemporary and delicious. The service is friendly and informative without being pushy. My wife and I always enjoy this restaurant. We have dined all over the country, at some outstanding restaurants, and Cafe Pyrenees is one of our all time favorites. An absolute gem, right here in Libertyville!

Don't let the location and exterior fool you. It has good food, nice atmosphere, pleasant and knowledgeable service and owner hospitality. I have been twice and enjoyed it very much both times. I've had the salmon and hanger steak. Both were very good. Pricing is reasonable for both food and wine options. They also give you time to enjoy your evening and don't push you like many restaurants do. I'll be making this a regular place to dine for both business and pleasure.

We were so glad we ordered the Grand Marnier Soufflé when we arrived as it take 45 min. to prepare. Also loved the Hockey Puck dessert. For a main course we each had soup & an appetizer so shared the appetizers. I had French Onion soup. Not too salty & really tasty but would have liked more cheese. The guys had carrot soup that was really tasty. Appetizers were mussels (I'd order that just for the sauce that coms with it), escargot great with fresh, warm bread to dip in the garlic butter, and bruschetta. Wait staff great & kept the water & food coming. Mari, the owner stopped by several times thanking us for coming as construction done now & easier to get to again. A surprise party was going on too which made the atmosphere festive.

I arrived late, but no worries. Mari and my date were chatting like old friends. Like eating at your best friend's house, if you're friend is a gourmet! Beef melted, wine superbly matched. Wait staff un intrusive. And the "hockey puck" to round it off: soooo smooth! Coulda kicked myself for waiting so long to return. A new favorite.

We all had the hangar steak and it was tender and flavorful but only came with pomme frites. No veggie. A little $$$$$.

We had never been to Café Pyrenees before, but when we found ourselves in Libertyville this week we decided to give it a try. I'm not a huge fan of restaurants in strip malls, but it was very well done and decorated/designed really well so that you never felt like you were in a tin can strip mall. The food was very good - carrot soup, filet with bordelaise sauce and the chocolate hockey puck for dessert. The wine menu had a broad range and was very reasonably priced - and best of all - it was half price on Tuesday. If I lived up north, I can see visiting this place often.

Cafe Pyrenees has been in Lake County for many years serving consistently wonderful specialty dishes. The trademark Beef Bourguignon and Grilled Hanger Steak are terrific traditional items. An unclear menu that neglects most of its punctuation is one thing, being told you're wrong about what a dish was supposed to contain (after hunting down your mysteriously vanished waiter) when you were actually right without getting an apology from the server (only receiving a very delayed smaller portion of the accompanying food item) is something else.
