Diner Reviews
  • "The food preparation was excellent, except desserts. Serving sizes: too small to just right, overall on the small size. Salads are overpriced. Prices are on the expansive side but given the food quality and preparations are to be expected. Wine list: we struggled with the price for the local vineyard wine: $20 a Glass? Too steep! It's a VA wine, give us a break! We opted for an excellent Bottle for twice as much from a good wine list selections from more notable world regions. Enjoyed an outstanding white wine Haelah 2012, modestly priced. The service was warm, caring, personal, attentive and overall excellent. Real issue: the tables are so close to each other one practically rub elbows with the guests of the adjacent table."

  • "Food and service at dinner were wonderful. Could not have been any better. Wine list was extensive and food was delicious.. Food and service at breakfast were also wonderful. While the breakfast menu was simple and did not offer a lot of variety we found it delightful, plenty and the croissants were incredible....the best we have ever eaten."

  • "Cafe Provencal is a beautiful location with fantastic food and service. I will definitely go there again when I visit Williamsburg. The dining is intimate, the service impeccable, and the food delicious and rich. Located in the middle of a vineyard, the historic hotel is picturesque."

  • "I made a reservation at Cafe Provencal on OpenTable , super easy. I was called twice by the restaurant to confirm the reservation and to acknowledge adding an additional guest. A great personal touch! Food was wonderful, atmosphere was great, restaurant is set in the bottom floor of a B&B on the Williamsburg Winery grounds. Highly recommend for special occasions."

  • "Wonderful meal and absolutely impeccable service. A hidden gem in Williamsburg with an intimate restaurant and an unusually talented chef. If you dine there once you are likely to become addicted."

  • "Husband and I enjoyed a nice quiet meal after a wine tasting tour at Williamsburg Winery. We had an early 5:30pm reservation and were greeted by a warm and attentive staff. Alone for a portion of the meal it was very quiet and enjoyable for a twosome. Later on another couple entered the dining area and we actually felt comfortable engaging them in conversation. We all talked about how good the meal was and really enjoyed the 3 course menu option. Each course was delicious and well presented. Reasonably priced for the outcome, I would highly recommend."

  • "Perfect place for a solo diner or couple. Service was excellent, attentive without feeling rushed, and the food just as good. It's a bit hard to find if you're unfamiliar with the area, but once there it was well wor a couple of wrong turns! Cozy downstairs location with a nice, but not stuffy ambiance."

  • "I didn't know what to expect, though I had read an article about the chef. He did not dissappoint! The food was cooked perfectly, scallops melted in our mouths! We had the rockfish for the entree and were very happy. Service was spot on! Aaron, our waiter was fantastic and kept the food coming at the right time and right temperature. The only low point was the creme brulee, it tasted good but was not as firm as I like. (It was a little runny) But other than that, we were extremely happy and would definitly go back. Get there about 15 min early and enjoy a glass of wine in the library!"

  • "We hit an off night, it didn't go well. This was an exception. Normally the restaurant is very good. And service is flawless. The restaurant has an exceptional chef and service is generally the best in the city."

  • "Took some friends who hadn't been here before....one of them can be difficult to please and they both loved it! The steaks (we had both the ribeye special and the filet mignon) were excellent....desserts very yummy and our waiter Aaron was perfect. A great place to get together with friends. On the pricey side, but totally worth it!"

  • "Outstanding chef and beautiful presentation. This hidden gem is as good as food gets in the area. We highly recommend it and their wine list is as full and good as the presentation of the food."

  • "Took a good friend to dinner for her birthday. We both loved the food and service. We toured the winery first. Major bonus."

  • "The menu and specials provided a wide array of dining choices. Our selections were truly outstanding in taste and presentation. The timing of each course being served was very relaxing. Our server was very courteous, informative and professional. The restaurant became known to us because of involvement with the Williamsburg Winery. Accommodations are available at Wedmore Place at the winery. This is where the restaurant is located. Having visited Williamsburg several times a year for many years, we are thrilled to have discovered this gem. We will be returning on our next visit to Williamsburg. If you love and appreciate fine dining, you must go!"

  • "We love to come to dine in Williamsburg. Last time here we could not secure a reservation at Cafe Provencal. We were able to secure one for my birthday. It was one of the best if not the best meal we have had here in Williamsburg. The waiter was aware of what we needed. He did not hover. We had a surprise hors d'oeuvre from the chef which was delicious. Our salad was superb--many different tastes. My husband had the pork chop and I had the filet mignon. He was delighted with the pork chop and my filet was the best I have ever had--charred on the outside and rare in the middle. My husband had a desert similar to creme brûlée which he enjoyed and I had a seasoned pineapple and strawberry dish with ice cream that had exquisite flavor."

  • "This was our party of three's first time here and the experience was thoroughly enjoyable. I have eaten in some of the finest restaurants in the world, and the food here is at the top of my list. Salads, foie gras appetizer, and the salmon, crabcakes, and sweetbreads entrees were all excellent. Pricing for salads seemed a little more than normal, but since the quality and flavor were first-rate (and they were considerably larger than most restaurants) the price was commensurate. Loved the intimate feel and the décor. There was a bridal party dining in the next room, and it was still quite quiet. Would heartily recommend this restaurant."

  • "Everything was fantastic. The food was delicious. The wait staff friendly and attentive. Ambience was elegant and quiet. We are so happy that we got a chance to spend a romantic date night here."

  • "The atmosphere was pleasant, and the service was excellent, but when we made reservations for dinner, we expected to be offered the full menu, and expected French cuisine. Neither of these expectations were met. Unannounced, the restaurant extended their Valentine's day fixed menu dates. I don't consider gnocchi to be particularly French, and the restaurant's attempt at a quinoa salad put too much focus on presentation, and not enough on flavor. My steak with Brussels sprouts was tasty, but not inspired. My husband's Monkfish was bland, but the accompanying collard greens and black eyed peas were flavorful. Dessert was small chocolate dishes - not terribly original. I did appreciate the complementary chocolate strawberries, however."

  • "As we arrived, we almost left, there were NO NO NO lights on at the restaurant. We had to find our way to the front door from the light coming from under the door. I told the lady at the front desk, she was shocked that no one had turned on the lights. What a shock, turn on the lights when the sun goes down. We were told to go down the hall to the right and then turn to the left and go thru the double doors to the restaurant, did we need a map and the to our surprise, we were told 'YOU ARE THE ONLY PEOPLE HERE', She did not even assist us to the restaurant. A gentleman greeted us and explained the only other reservation did not show. We had the place to ourselves. We could not see the menu and a candle was lit, what's with no lights"

  • "This was our first visit and we had a delicious meal - starting with fresh salads, a reasonably priced Pinot followed by entrees of salmon and duck ... both were wonderful. Our server, Aaron, was attentive and gave us good advice on our wine and entree selections. We would recommend Cafe Provençal for a special occasion."

  • "What a surprising find! We've made many trips to Williamsburg but have never ventured out to the Winery. We booked a last minute reservation at Cafe Provencal because our 'go to' restaurant was fully booked. I had some trepidation because of some negative comments on Trip Advisor, but the evening turned out to be perfect. We had a very intimate dining experience, with terrific food, excellent service, and great atmosphere - primarily because it was quiet enough to carry on a conversation, a tough thing to find nowadays. Our meals were prepared perfectly, and presented creatively.....so happy to have found this restaurant!!"

  • "Absolutely wonderful! The waiter was very friendly and helpful. The food is beyond amazing and the portion size is good. Had a great experience. It's very upscale but not uptight. We were unsure of what to get so our waiter helped us out and was incredibly kind. We couldn't decide on dessert so he brought us out creme brûlée to try on the house. It really is a fantastic place."

  • "My friend and I had reservations on a night where the dining room had been flooded. Dinner was served in a side room that had a total of 3 tables. I have a feeling this caused the servers to be a bit out-of-sync. Don't get me wrong, they were great just not used the the set-up. The noise level was so low, that anything other than a whisper tended to be yelling. The food was very good as was the wine selection. Come here if you want a dress-up date or special occassion because the food is wonderful and well executed. The servers are wonderful and probably incredible once they are back in the dining room."

  • "Cafe Provencal is located on the same property as the Williamsburg Winery (WW), and is also connected to the Wedmore Inn. The wine list was extensive and included many offerings from WW. Atmosphere is quiet and quaint. The menu is not overbearing and can be viewed in advance online. We had the scallops and the gnocchi for appetizers (both excellent), We split the arugula salad (avoid this one - really the only disappointment). For the main course I had the pork chop and my wife had the duck (both were very good), the duck was the best my wife had ever had. And finally, we shared a creme brulee for dessert, which was excellent (however I'm not a huge creme brulee fan). Overall great experience and we would definitely go back again."

  • "We greatly enjoyed our second visit to Cafe Provencal. It is certainly worth the short drive from Colonial Williamsburg to dine at an intimate, comfortable, and serious--but not stuffy--restaurant. We definitely will return."

  • "We enjoyed a terrific dinner at Cafe Provençal on the occasion of our wedding anniversary. As other reviewers have written, it's off the beaten path (4.5 miles from the restored colonial area) but worth the trip. The dining area is small, upscale, and nicely appointed. Everything was delicious from the complementary amuse bouche, to the roasted butternut squash soup, to the crabcakes served on polenta or the smoked paprika pork chop over warm arugula with caramelized onions. We hadn't realized that the restaurant is affiliated with the Williamsburg Winery (and its own inn), so the wine list features the local vintages in addition to a full selection of non-Virginia wines. Entrees run $22-35 but portions are generous. Highly recommended!"

  • "We made reservations here because we had not been before and had read good reviews. Tried calling to find the holiday menu and price but were told it was not available, three days prior. The meal consisted of 4 courses, the first of which was a pork and duck pate which was unappreciated by the three of us. The second course was a nice salad with blood oranges which went over well. The main entree, a pork osso buco was huge and well prepared...everyone one of us loved it. Dessert was a run- of -the- mill chocolate marquis. I chose a flight of wines to accompany each couse of the meal. All were excellent choices ( 2 ports, a pinot rose, and a cote do Rhone). The bill with the 20% added gratuity came to $350 which came as a great shock."

  • "My wife and I finally made it out to this local gem recently for our anniversary. We first ordered the seared scallops which were incredible. She ordered the crab cakes and I was lucky enough to get the last ribeye remaining (not on the menu). The crab cakes were perfect and I would know as my wife is a light eater so I was able to enjoy the leftover crabcake the following night. The ribeye...what can I say? I've had good steaks, great steaks even. Dry aged wood fired expensive etc. I thought those were great. This steak blew all the others away. Melt in your mouth perfection. Dessert was creme brulee for her and an apple tart for me. Wonderful. A great dining experience."

  • "Four of us arrived for our reservation. Usually comp champagne is offered, arrived only when we told them it was anniversary. Waiter was somewhat inattentive; my husband ordered wine, food came & waiter asked if we wanted wine. Little chance to enjoy the wine by itself. Still food was good, atmosphere is lovely, and for special occasions it is a good choice."
