Diner Reviews
  • "We have been coming to Cafe Pinot for many years. It is in such a wonderful location, next to the library downtown. Love to sit outside on a warm summer night surrounded by highrises and the library. However, the food has definitely gone downhill. It used to be "fit for foodies" but is now, the menu and the food is uninteresting and seems perfunctory. Unfortunately, we have had similar experiences the last few times we have eaten here. We will now begin the search for other downtown restaurants with patio seating to satisfy our "foodie" urges when we are in the neighborhood or in an downtown LA state of mind. BTW, other downtown eateries we love are: Church and State, WP 24."

  • "Excellent wait staff. Good menu, moderately priced (for such good food). I'm not a "patio" person; but the outdoor dining area is just beautiful here, both during early evening (still having sun) and when the sun goes down. Having the Public Library entrance so close is a big plus, too. It's worth a look-see at the Library before or after dinner. We ate here before a reading at the Library and the waiter made sure we'd be served and finished on time. Three of us dining loved our choice: striped bass for two of us; pork chop - all GREAT."

  • "Tasteless asparagus salad and tuna salad thank goodness English pea soup and mushroom soup was good. We have been to this restaurant for lunch and dinner several times."

  • "It was so great that I'd seriously consider shooting my load next time! Damn it was orgasmic!"

  • "One of my favorite spots for lunch. The patio on a sunny day is so enjoyable. Food is always spot on. Service ranges from ok to great."

  • "Wonderful outdoor dining under lights and the downtown tall buildings. Food was excellent and service was equally as good. The service was attentive and polite."

  • "After finding this restaurant on the internet and reading the reviews this looked like a very promising find and the prospect of eating Al Fresco was a bonus but in reality it did not live up to the hype. The food was mediocre to say the least, chicken ravioli starter was tasteless, cauliflower soup was far too creamy, chicken main was watery, duck main only 2 small slices of duck. The sweets were the best part of the whole meal. It was a nice area to sit outside but this didn't make up for the poor meal."

  • "Summer Lunch under the canopy of olive trees & downtown buildings. A glass of wine, lovely healthy kale salad, or delicious grass fed burger. Divine! Thanks for the attentive, patient service, and corner to put the stroller. It was like being on vacation."

  • "Traffic made us late for our reservation & we worried about making Music Center on time, but were seated immediately & served promptly. . Lovely on the patio. Ordered wine which was very good and entrees only. Daughter's chicken was fine, my halibut was overcooked and disappointing, but I didn't say anything to the waiter who was so attentive and concerned about getting us fed in time to catch the shuttle. • "You can never go wrong at Cafe Pinot. Service will always be top notch and food is guaranteed to be delicious. I also highly recommend their french press coffee-truly outstanding."

  • "The restaurant is in an elegant setting. The food and service are exquisite. The background music was too loud forcing patrons to elevate their normal talking voices. "

  • "I liked it but not crazy about it. Salmon was flat and didn't work with the carrot sauce at all. Risotto was great and chocolate mousse was amazing. Great wine list too"

  • "We came here for my boyfriend's birthday. I was really bummed that the hostess did not call until 5PM the night of our dinner to tell me that the patio was reserved for a wedding...I chose this place specifically for the outdoor dinning. However, when we got there they still had the sky room open, so it was like we were sitting outdoors, but without the pretty olive trees and lights. I could see the outdoor patio and it did look very romantic and beautiful! The service was outstanding and the food was delicious...oh, and there is no corkage fee??! We definitely want to come back when the patio is open. "

  • "The hostess is very rude. You don't expect going to an expensive restaurant and be mistreated. "

  • "Our entire office went to Cafe Pinot couple of months ago and had a great lunch. So I went back this week and ordered the spa special. It was just so-so. I was a little disappointed. The steak was too gammy. This restaurant is so close to my office. I've always liked the ambience and the service. I should not allow this one so-so experience affect my overall impression of this restaurant. I will go back again."

  • "When I arrived at Cafe Pinot the wind had been whipping up and tree branches all around the cafe were snapping. So we had to dine indoors. To top it off, a film was being made and a helicopter was doing crazy stunts right above the restaurant. There was hardly anyone in the restaurant when I got there and they seated us near the window so at least we got a good view. A little later another family arrived and they were seated right next to us. I thought it a little odd that the only two families in the place were sharing a bench and right on top of each other when the restaurant was empty. The food was great and there was a lot of it. But the service could have been better being there was where only two families there. "

  • "Dining at Cafe Pinot was a pleasurable experience from the time we arrived at the parking valet and the welcomer until we left after having had a marvelous evening of great food, good wine and marvelous service. The only flaw in the meal was the limited selection they offered for dry sherry. My wife and son had lighter fare for their appetizers, and I had the Onion Soup. All were sensational, but mine was the richest and most flavorful Onion Soup that I have ever had. My son and I both had the Pork that was the tenderest and juiciest Pork that I have had. Deserts were excellent, especially the platter of cheeses they offered me."

  • "While the food was outstanding as always, we were not satisified with the table we were given. I don't know if they oversold for Mother's Day, but there were a large number of tables on the patio, much larger than normal, and we were put at a table that was really for 4 people, although we were a party of 5. This made for a cramped dining experience, which by definitiion was less enjoyable."

  • "the food took an hour to get to the table. Luckily they comped the lunches and it was a beautiful day."

  • "This is a great addition to any theatre experience at the Ahmanson. Transportation to and from the restaurant is provided by the Ahmanson. Great dining experience right sharing a lot with the Los Angeles Public Library."

  • "Tried this restaurant again after a few years, and it is still not to our liking; food is fair, overcooked, soggy vegetables; service is poor: having to call on the waiter for questions, check. ambience is ok but needs updating. don't think those with reservations should be seated by doorway."

  • "We got married here back in 2009. We fell in love with the atmosphere here, especially the outdoor. It's quiet and nice on the weekend. The food is always great. The menu changes, which keep the place interesting. Everytime you come back, you get the see the chef's creative new menu and it's always delicious."

  • "The food was creatively prepared with only the best ingredients-the service was very good and the room is a downtown gem as always."

  • "You will be delighted you made your reservation at Cafe Pinot. Excellent food, service and ambiance. It's ranks as a top 10 best restaurant in LA for me. Sit on the patio for mini vacation from the hustle and bustle. "

  • "Let's face it, it's all about the food. Even if the ambiance is lovely, if the food is disappointing, all is lost. The menu is unimaginative, selection poor and food tasteless. I was very disappointed. Doubt I'd go back. Certainly wouldn't recommend."

  • "This is the second time my wife and I dined at Cafet Pinot. We were back in town with 8pm theater tickets and decided to enjoy dinner here again. We were thrilled. There is underground parking directly beneath the restaurant (validated ticket with dinner so no charge downtown LA parking). We ate on the patio with nearby heaters. Service was outstanding. They knew about our theater plans and were very sensitive to the timing. Food was creative and fresh. I would highly recommend."

  • "Cafe Pinot has a very nice ambiance. Its food does not live up to its ambiance. Its prices do. We woud choose a different restaurant next time we are eating in that area."

  • "The food was not good. It looked and tasted like banquet food. I had the flat iron steak that was very tough and chewy. The sauce was bland. It really wasn't worth eating. My husband had the pork chip that was ok. It was kind if rare in my opinion. He didn't love it but ate it because he was hungry. My martini was great! And the atmosphere is nice. The service was good but I wouldn't go back."

  • "We often attend the Aloud program at the L.A. Central Library. On special occasions we'll treat ourselves to a fine dining experience on the patio of the adjacent Cafe Pinot."

  • "My wife and I dined at Cafe Pinot Sunday evening, April 6. As usual, everything was perfect. The hostess was charming and showed us to a great table. The waiter, Carlos, was friendly, listened to us carefully, and did not intrude on our conversation. While we did enjoy the lobster risotto, we could detect lobster flavor but could not find any actual lobster in the dish. That is not particularly a complaint, because the dish was so well prepared it would seem foolish to complain about something that was so wonderful. Cafe Pinot has long been our go-to restaurant in Los Angeles, and will continue to be. We recommend it highly, and we've dined frequently in Paris and throughout Italy through the years. Don't miss it if you are in LA."

  • "We have been here a number of times and always really enjoyed the ambiance and the food. The ambiance was great. But we were a bit disappointed by the asparagus salad.. it was quite bland. It was described as shave asparagus but was simply large asparagus cut in half and no seasoning whatsoever. We also had the pekin duck and it was just so so again not well seasoned."

  • "I've been coming here for almost a decade, and noticed a sharp decline in service and food quality around 2008. This was my first visit in a while, and I'm happy to say that the food quality and service are back to their old levels. We have a lot of food allergies, and the manager went over every ingredient in each dish with us, and make some excellent recommendations for what could be altered for us. It's very rare to see a fine dining restaurant so flexible, but they definitely were. And they have (in addition to a very good wine list) free corkage on wine/champagne."

  • "What a hidden gem. A beautiful oasis within the city. Of course the food was delicious, the service perfect (they were very considerate knowing that we had performance tickets) . This was my second visit prior to attending a concert. I plan to schedule a dinner when I can linger and enjoy the surroundings. The patio is my favorite spot but dining inside the restaurant is also lovely."

  • "We went to Cafe Pinot on the recommendation of a friend. It was all she said it would be and more. They were extremely accomodating to the fact that we had tickets toi the opera, and they gave us tickets for the shuttle service. Aside from that, it was a most pleasnt experience, and we will return on our next trip to LA!"

  • "Twinkling Italian lights accent the trees surrounding the beautiful outdoor dining area of this special gem of a restaurant. And dining inside and looking out the floor to ceiling windows is just as fun. Considering the nature in the city atmospher, the experience just gets better when the wine list presents a good selection of wines and the menu a fine selection seafood, poultry and meat. Appetizers, Entrees, and Dessert s all spot-on delicious. Definitely would come back when again in LA."
