Diner Reviews
  • "Pestos is our go to place for visitors and friends when we want to give a good first impression of Hilo."

  • "After visiting Hawaii Volcano Observatory past sundown, we conveniently booked an online reservation, via smartphone, at Cafe Pesto-Hilo. It was St. Patrick's Day and a delicious Corned Beef & Cabbage Pizza was offered. Everyone in our party enjoyed their dinner selection! The service was great and the historical building was interesting. Recommended!"

  • "About as close as you can get to an upscale plate to eat in Hilo. The food and service are good and the room is reminiscent of old Hawaii. Well worth the drive from the Kona side."

  • "Very Nice Lunch. Service was on time from start to end. Food was great (it's really hard to get a 5 from me) just a really nice place in a small town."

  • "This restaurant is kid friendly. I had lunch with my daughter and we shared items from their appetizers. Waiter was awesome and although it a busy St Patrick's Day holiday, he took the time to check on us and provide service with a smile. Shirley Temples were a treat and we topped off the lunch with mint/Oreo ice cream. Highly recommend Cafe Pesto for friends or family especially waiter, Rodney! Mahalo ~"

  • "We ate here our last night on the big island (and Hawaii in general). Very good food, and the waitress was very personable and had just the right amount of service - attentive without being overbearing or annoying. Bought a souvenir pint glass to take home. Would definitely go back whenever I come back."

  • "The place was charming and the food was great. I had the wok fired shrimp and scallops and it was fantastic."

  • "Went with a party of six for dinner and Cafe Pesto was downright delicious. Our waiter was very friendly and knowledgable about the menu. Shared the nacho appetizer: not your typical nachos. Just six chips! But still good. Salads were fresh, green, and crispy. Dressings were all very good. Chocked risotto: very good, a crispy thigh and leg over creamy rice. Pesto linguini: great sausage and marinara sauce Luau pizza: nice, fresh pineapples and the pork is tender Greek pizza: nice blend of cheeses and tender crust. I'd definitely recommend Cafe Pesto for anyone looking for a fancy-feeling restaurant without breaking the bank"

  • "To me, Cafe Pesto was one of the nicer restaurants known for it's consistency in quality food and service. This last visit, they dropped a couple notches. To be brief, the bread, which is served complimentary, but almost like an appetizer being it is the first thing to hit your mouth and first in your dining experience.......was 'flat', tasteless and no appeal. Waitress said, new baker and he forgot the 'salt' so all the bread is like that. Pork n Pea appetizer was impossible to eat. Coffee served lukewarm and perhaps the biggest disappointment was the no fanfare for our friend's birthday."

  • "While the food was good, I was taken aback by the small portion and high price of my Hawaiian Surf and Turf. The steak was a mere 2 oz, if that, while the dungeoness crab had very little meat. It was served over pieces of breadfruit in a sauce with 3 spears of asparagus. All of this for $29 (it was the daily special). I'm glad my wife didn't finish her mango-glazed chicken with mashed potatoes, because it was a much better meal for me. The ambience is nice and there was a local singer/guitarist that kept things lively. We also enjoyed the small art gallery across the hall afterward."

  • "Totally unexpected great food. Had the catch of the day with truffled mashed potatoes that was outstanding. Also had the seafood risotto that was also outstanding. Finished with bananas foster that complemented to meal. Great cuisine."

  • "Overall the service is professional, the food was great and the atmosphere was pleasant. The noise level is high, having to raise your voice quite a bit to hear one another although this is part of the atmosphere. Will retun again. Suggest them to add to their wine list a few more choices."

  • "So the hubby and I went to spend Valentine's dinner here with our 2 kiddies. Because we had reservations due to opentable, we reached there a few minutes late and was seated right away. The waiter took awhile to get to us but we understood how busy it was. We ordered and got our food quickly to my surprise. I was a bit surprise of the price compared to the food so that's why I rated 3 stars. It was ok. They had live entertainment which was awesome. I grew up to this type of Hawaiian music so I was very appreciative. It was one of the nicer place here in the Hilo side which is hard to fine. All in all I enjoyed it and will be back."

  • "They were very busy so we were glad to have made a reservation. That said, it took a while to get seated and when we finally were, it was well past our reservation time. Food was good and our server was very polite."

  • "Thankfully we made reservations because there was a wait but we got right in with our OpenTable reservation. The food was really good and we highly recommend the coconut calamari! Service was a bit slow but our waiter was very helpful. There was a mistake with my order, both my fault and the waiter's, and the fixed it immediately. both our dinners were very good!! thanks."

  • "After 4 days in Hilo, trying various highly rated restaurants, we finally found one that was good. They have some basics like pizza and pasta as well as some higher-end offerings. Decent wine and beer selection. I didn't rate it 5 stars because though the food was good, I can't say it was amazing. Standards in Hilo just aren't what they are in other areas, I think. I'll be trying out other places, but cafe pesto is, by far, the best meal we've had here so far."

  • "Been here many times before and unfortunately the food is starring to disappoint. Burnt pizza, by the waiters admission, under cooked steaks, cream sauce on pasta that was sour. Food took over 45 minutes to get served. Waiter was apologetic and did his best to smooth things over. Used to be awesome, but now just fair."

  • "We had a great dinner 2 nights ago - we shared the Blue Cesar Salad followed by the smoked salmon pipette and chicken with risotto. Our server was attentive and friendly. We were both tired after a long day of site seeing so we didn't look too much into the wine list. Great spot!"

  • "Our recent Café Pesto visit was great as always! We look forward to having our company x-mas party here every year, as well as ordering lunch to go for staff meetings! Great job to the staff, and thank you for always making our experience so awesome :)"

  • "My husband and I have been coming here for more than ten years and we have never been disappointed. We got a seat in the far corner from the musician so we could hear each other speak. It does get noisy but that doesn't take away from the delicious food, friendly service and Hilo feel. I had the crab cake salad this time and my husband had the BLT pizza. Yummy!"

  • "Ran out of surf and turf a little fast for a special dish and the service was slow compared to prior visits with the same level of drivers. Server this night would mumble as he talked and had to be asked to repeat himself a couple of times. Food was very good."

  • "Remember good planning pays off. We made a reservation a day or two prior to arriving in Hilo. Wow! What a difference it made at this local spot. We waited just a few minutes and then bypassed others that must have just showed up at the door. The service was excellent and the menu has a great selection. Local musicians played while we ate (Sunday evening) at a volume that we could still easily speak to each other. Enjoy!"

  • "They were most accommodating with my request for an extra chair just for my injured foot :) Also they let me sit undisturbed after lunch at the table while my family shopped and visited around. Food is great all round and they even made an off menu dish ( ahi poke) on request."

  • "Nice restaurant please don't get me wrong as there aren't that many on Hilo Bay. We ordered wine which was poured and placed on top of ice in a bucket which of course did not get cold. Ordered some wonderful appetizers which really were good and ordered dinner at the same time. (mistake) Appetizers arrived and then about three minutes later dinner arrived not giving us time to chat over wine or really love the starters."
